People decompiled Halo: Combat Evolved, the original Xbox version. Then they ported it to Windows, Linux, and Android. You can also play it in a web browser.

They added 128 player multiplayer. They also added 4 player split screen coop.

This came out a couple days ago and there have been non-stop updates. I've been in the discord and there is a new update almost every hour.
They added online multiplayer where you send a discord link.

To play it you download a release zip from the github page, and an original xbox halo iso from the internet archive.

Then you just run it and point it to that ISO so it can extract the maps.

It's still a WIP but it already runs great. They plan on adding a ton of things, like actual internet network code, online co-op, mod support, etc.

Any comparison to the official PC version? I feel it already played perfectly.

Compared to the original Gearbox PC version this works better with a controller. Compared to MCC probably nothing notable except for 4 player split screen coop. There are changes they put in the original gearbox port which was used as the base for the MCC port. Not really anything you'll notice unless you're a hardcore original Halo guy.

But you can play cross platform linux/pc/android/web browser 128 players, and you can have up to 4 people on each system. I think you can probably even play cross platform LAN against people on the original Xbox, but I haven't tried it myself.

This will be the version I play going forward.

People have now ported it to PS4 and PS5, Mac. And even Wii U (although it doesn't run great). You can probably get this running on about anything considering it was made in 2001.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone eventually ports this to Dreamcast and modifies it to run well. They did with GTA3 and Vice City.
