I wonder how they figured it out?
The amount of daemons and overseer programs I see running now a days just on the enterprise stuff at my work, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was standard enterprise security software that queries for unapproved hardware changes.

An IT ticket gets automatically generated if I use too much CPU or memory for too long (like 30 minutes), it’s so frustrating and stupid.

What? I could see the point on a shared server, but on individual workstations? How to make an issue from a non-issue I guess.

They probably log all hardware as part of their management system.

It's prerty easy to see what hardware is in your pc using software. Logging the hardware configs of each pc would be a default thing to do IMO. I know if I wanted to manage the systems in my organization, I'd want something that logged the hardware assets of each device and would flag any changes. Expected changes would be marked as approved when authorized and researched when it wasn't authorized. This would be relatively trivial to do.

That linked article is for turds. I guess we don't have enough natives in the US to do these jobs - "
LATEST: A Chinese national who managed to get a job working as a U.S. CBP supervisor in Calais has been arrested and charged in what FBI agents claim was a plot to install modified hardware in Department of Homeland Security computers.
Terry “Jiajia” Liu — originally of Guangzhou, per his Facebook page — was arrested after a counter intelligence investigation captured hidden-camera footage of him breaking into government computers and modifying the hard drives."
