670e tomahawk chipset lanes only x1

I have an MSI x670e tomahawk that only wants to negotiate x1 from cpu to chipset instead of x4. I RMAed it and got the board back...same board. Same problem.

Do I try again, spend another however much to mail it back to California or just chalk it up to the tech gods. I'm not very confident it would get resolved considering it wasn't the first time.

Raise a stink and yell at them for not fixing it? If being out a machine is holding you back, you may need to get another board for now until they get it right, then sell it to recoup your costs.

My MSI X870e mobo wouldn't start, NB got burning hot (I smelled something hot) while I was trying to short the power pins to try that. RMA'ed it and 2 1/2 weeks later got it back and it has worked fine since. Are there some BIOS settings that might affect that negotiation speed?

I already ordered another one...this is getting stupid.

I dont think so. I have another am5 system and it negotiates to x4 on the chipset link no problem. I don't have to do anything. Not only that, the chipset link from chipset #1 to chipset #2 is at x4 and I didn't do jack for that.

My guess would be that they never understood precisely what the issue was or they didn't fix it the first couple of times if you have the same board. Do you have a screenshot of where you are seeing this? I've tried several ways to find such info and cannot find anything.

you can see it form lspci:

from the new board:

The maping shows the chipset is at 02.1...all the chipset devices are connected down from that; nics, USB, etc.

Then asking what the link speed is...shows gen4 x4, which is right like it should be.

jason@fraser:~$ sudo lspci -s 00:02.1 -vv | grep -E 'LnkCap:|LnkSta:'
LnkCap: Port #1, Speed 32GT/s, Width x4, ASPM L1, Exit Latency L1 <32us
LnkSta: Speed 16GT/s, Width x4
jason@fraser:~$

The other board shows:

LnkCap: Port #1, Speed 32GT/s, Width x4, ASPM L1, Exit Latency L1 <32us
LnkSta: Speed 16GT/s, Width x1

So capable of x4, but only negotiated at x1.

You are using Linux...

I was curious since I never thought about anything like that happening and wanted to figure out how to check, except in my case I would be doing so on Win11
