Marvel's Wolverine (Insomniac Games)

I just found out this game was actually $70...

That's wild.

I think you're all wrong women''s bone facial structure been changing since McDonald's opened.

LOL.

Man, I really fucked myself digitally preordering this game since Sony won’t allow a return if you’ve preloaded.
You absolutely can refund a pre-order. I did it with Days Gone when it launched with no issue. It may have even been after it launched, but I never actually downloaded it. Glad I did since I think I got that for free too with PS+ a year or two later and it was a good game, but def not worth $60 at the time.

They won’t refund it because I downloaded the preload which is BS.

Ahh, yeah that's trash, esp. since it hasn't even launched yet. I bet if you push it hard enough they will. I've got them to refund games my kids accidentally bought and played a couple times too back in the PS4 days at least. But that's a YMMV thing since it's not explicitly allowed in their policy.

I don't mind a 10 hour game if it's good. But in this case........................ no respect for the source material and all the other issues it has. The only thing they didn't fail at was making all the suits, and probably some of the environmental art. I can't really fault the engine engineers either.

The $70 price tag is way too steep for what you are getting. Even if it were a really fantastic game that nailed everything perfectly, the actual play time is lacking for the money invested. That said, the combat here doesn't seem to be very deep, the story is awful and doesn't do the source material justice. On top of that, they made the characters ugly because SBI thinks attractive characters are problematic.

So I played a couple hours. I’m actually really enjoying it on the hard difficulty option. A lot of the stuff online is a bit overblown, and it’s not as bad as they would have you believe. I’m actually enjoying the game more than Spider-Man 2 personally, and on the PS5 pro the game looks and runs fantastic. Is it worth $70. No. Just like COD isn’t worth $70. However, I am in fact enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would given the reviews. I’d say at $50 it’s an easy buy or wait for PS Plus. Either way, IMO it’s better than spider man 2 for me.

everything is exaggerated online...especially from a certain crowd...everything has to be the greatest thing ever or the worst game of all time...there is no middle ground...most games fall into that middle area...Wolverine doesn't seem like the greatest game ever nor is it Insomniac's best but I'm sure it's a decent 7 or maybe 8 on the high end

Spiderman 1 and 2 were bad as well IMO. I don't blame SBI or any of the other 'woke villains'; I just think Insomniac has slowly hemorrhaged their talented employees over the past decade or two.

First one was fantastic. Second one had a lot of problems and was filled with pretty bullshit filler. It would have been better just linear doing main missions than having to do side missions where you help do Captain Planet tasks or help out the disabled kid fly drones.

Wolverine fixes that, and that’s why I’m enjoying it more IMO. And honestly the combat is just more entertaining with the gore.

I disagree that the first one was fantastic but it would definitely have been better if it was a more focused experience. Batman Arkham Asylum still reigns supreme as the best superhero game IMO; none of the open world superhero games have been fun for longer than a couple of hours.

The SkillUp review is pretty damning about the combat being repetitive. Coming off things like Nioh3 or Stellar Blade or Lord's of the Fallen, that would disappoint me. As for the rest of it, we can see that most of the major characters have ugly character models. This was clearly done on purpose. As for the story, that interpretation of Sabertooth and Wolverine as characters having "room for love" is pretty damning. I don't know how this really manifests within the game itself. What it tells me is that the people who worked on the narrative do not understand the characters or the world of Marvel's X-Men at all. This kind of critical misunderstanding and misinterpretation of characters is never a good sign.

Now, that's not to say that everything done by someone who doesn't truly understand the source material will be bad. Let's use Star Trek Strange New Worlds as an example. The "homage" episodes are basically trash for the most part. The series as a whole is a mixed bag as its from the same idiots who brought us all the woke trash in the form of Discovery and Starfleet Academy. All cringe all the time. However, Strange New Worlds isn't all bad. There are some genuinely good episodes there. The hit rate on good versus bad isn't great, but the good ones are there. In other words, I don't know the full story of this game, but I doubt its all bad. The reviewers posted in this thread generally have good things to say most of the time on that front, though SkillUp mentions a couple of problems. For casual fans, these issues (if present) may not be noticed or that big a deal.

Fair enough on that.

Honestly, if the ugly character models were the only problem, I'd probably pick the game up at the right price. The trailers make the combat look good. I won't say that they don't. Though there are aspects about the way Wolverine takes damage, etc. that were done better by the very old X-Men Wolverine Origins game from back in the day.

On this part, I'll actually agree with you. That said, most of the reviews posted in this thread aren't doing that. They aren't calling it the worst game ever or anything like that. Yes, there are reviewers and YouTubers out there that are doing that. But that's not what we are talking about here. Once again, you try to obfuscate and play down certain issues with games as if they don't exist.
  • The character models are fucking hideous. You have eyes don't you?
  • The people who did write the story don't understand the universe or the characters. Their own words tell us this.
  • The combat appears to be repetitive and dumbed down. This isn't a problem for some people and given the relatively short play time of the game, may not be that bad.
  • The game treats you like it's a "Fisher Price my First X-Men" game for toddlers. This is clear by the fact that you get three visual clues to where "secret chests" are. You can complete the motorcycle section or sections without touching the controls and you cannot fail QTE's. This level of handholding is confirmed by video evidence.
The last two points are all about gameplay which you state is the only thing you care about. Fair enough. If that's how you feel, then by that metric, the game isn't very good. Certainly not at the $70 price point. A price point we should not allow to be normalized for something this short. Not when there are free to play games or other AAA titles that give you a lot more for the same money.

As for the first and second points, the game fails there too. You don't think that the first point matters, but here is why you are wrong. When the design of your characters is so bad that people mistake the character for a completely different one, the design has failed. Lady Deathstrike gets mistaken as an ugly rendition of Psylocke. This isn't good from a design standpoint and does hurt the game's narrative as its jarring and disruptive to immersion. Jean Grey looks like a middle aged divorced woman at a nightclub trying to score a date. Fine. If you don't see a problem with that I don't know what else to tell you. But at the very least, having your characters be misidentified by fans of the franchise indicates a clear issue.

The last point I'll make about the first bullet point is that you want to go on and on about how Wolverine is comic book accurate. Which, I never said his look wasn't beyond the fact that I think his facial model is bad. Some of the different in-game suits also look very good on that front, and pay homage to Wolverine's decades as a character. However, the point you conveniently dodge or say is irrelevant is regarding the other characters. Jean Gray is normally portrayed as a young and attractive woman in her late 20's to early 30's. She's not supposed to look like a 40 something divorcee this early in Wolverine's story. BTW, this is an example of one of your strawman arguments. You say, Wolverine looks accurate and by description alone, he is. But this is just you coping with and obfuscating the fact that the other characters like Mystique and Jean Grey were done dirty with hideous character models that don't look authentic to the comics in the slightest.

As for the second point, this is an indicator that the story isn't as good as it could be. Is that the end of the world? No, it's not. But understand this is a game that's selling itself on the experience and being a single-player narrative driven story game with visceral combat. This means that they are trying to sell you a Wolverine simulator of sorts and the game fails on that front when the developers fail to deliver an authentic experience. This is what happens when you hire consulting companies like SBI to "help" with your narrative. They have an agenda they push first which always hurts the quality of the narrative.

No game was ever helped by SBI's involvement. The data speaks for itself on this. Most games they've been involved with were financial flops. The ones that weren't were all sequels to very popular games and were part of established franchises. Even then, those games all did worse than their predecessors did which isn't how sequels usually work in the gaming industry. The Last of Us II and God of War Ragnarok are the best examples of this. They weren't flops, but they did do worse than their immediate predecessors.
.most games fall into that middle area...Wolverine doesn't seem like the greatest game ever nor is it Insomniac's best but I'm sure it's a decent 7 or maybe 8 on the high end
I disagree here. I think a 6/10 is a fair score based on what I've seen. That is to say, it's upper middle of the road, but not good. That's not to say there isn't fun that could be had here, but it's not a great game. 7/10 should be for a better than average and even a good game. 8 should be a solid title that's above average. 9/10 should be for games that are close to perfect and would be were it not for one or two flaws. 10/10 should be reserved for those once in a generation titles beloved by nearly everyone. Games that are at least, for their time virtually perfect or as close to perfection as is technically possible at the time.

6/10 is fair here in my opinion. Yes, I know that means I agreed with IGN here. But given I actually watched IGN's video, I'll stand by my statement that the score they gave is weirdly low given how they talked about the game in a mostly positive light in the video. They did call out a couple of issues, but very much downplayed the game's actual shortcomings. They also ignored several things that the internet is meme'ing to death for good reason. In other words, I agree with the score IGN gave, but I disagree with the tone of the video as its disjointed form the score it actually gave. Details, and the reason behind decisions or how the conclusions were reached do matter, even if you can't recognize that fact.

I can't speak to how good that game is or isn't. That said, you can have bad games without SBI's involvement. SBI's involvement in games also varies from game to game. Sometimes they are heavily involved and sometimes not. In all cases, the game is worse off for SBI's involvement. That said, the buck stops with Insomniac who was stupid enough to hire SBI and listen to their bullshit advice. Hence, middle-aged divorced Jean Grey.

didn't you end up playing Veilguard even though you kept going on and on about how terrible it looked?...seems like the more you hate a game the more you end up playing it

Get ON TOPIC. STOP THE BICKERING. Any more of it will get you banned from the thread.

Players Are Liking Marvel's Wolverine More Than Reviews

"it's far from perfect but it's absolutely a good time...I always thought the 6/10 reviews were a bit too harsh...but maybe all these low reviews and negative discourse actually did the game a favor by lowering expectations"

Like I said yesterday I’m shockingly really enjoying the game. IMO most of the media I’ve seen online is hyper fixating on things that are pretty meaningless. The actual combat I find to be challenging and fun on the harder difficulty. It’s got impressive visuals, and I’m generally liking the story so far as well. I’d still only rate it 7/0 because $70 is a lot for a play it once type of game, but it’s not as awful as some people are saying. Importantly for me is that it’s way funner than spiderman 2 which reviewers rated higher. Spider-Man 2 felt like a chore to play, where this game doesn’t.

This should have been an easy slam dunk.
If disc copies drop down to a low enough price I’ll probably pick one up (75% off). Wolverine is my favourite Marvel character, closely followed by Gambit/Nightcrawler/Punisher. Without the brand name attached I really don’t think this would have sold well at all.
