I just watched how they did the UI for the Duo. It's freakin slick. It looks like the system is moving focus between opening and closing. I wanted to be like "Meh... not for me." but if I was in the market for a new phone, the iPhone Duo would be on my shortlist.

$2k - $3k for what amounts to an overpriced iPad. The people who buy these are the same that bought into the Vision Pro. It's a status symbol or tech fashion. The fact the Duo only comes in two color choices speaks to me Apple expects low volume sales. I'm actually surprised they got the base model cost as low as $2k, I was expecting $3k base given the current climate.

Not buying into the marketing. The Duo doesn't look at all comfortable in your hand when folded. I'd be deathly scared of dropping such an expensive piece of hardware. I guess popsockets will be a thing, but comical.

2022 iPhone SE was their last reasonably sized iPhone. Sadly, I don't think Apple cares about that market segment right now. My mom has one and I keep telling her to try and stretch it out a few more years. Looks bleak every year when the smallest phone announced is 6.1". You'd think Apple would see cramming all that tech into a smaller phone as a challenge.
 
I heard my coworker mention Duo in reference to Apple today. This is what I told him I thought he was talking about. I got excited they were going to make it for real.

I'll probably buy one; I'm fairly all-in on the ecosystem and the open/close animation is sweet. This is absolutely a frivolous, unnecessary expense, but my life is full of such things that I don't need but do want. This mostly checks that box. I am a bit disappointed at not having a robust telephoto capability.

2022 iPhone SE was their last reasonably sized iPhone. Sadly, I don't think Apple cares about that market segment right now. IMO they are likely selling it for a loss. I think it’s a flop. It’s the modern trend of Apple now chasing trends versus making the trend.
 
That folding phone does look sharp except brittle as well. If I need a bigger screen, a laptop or desktop is oh so much better. It is still a phone.

I have an Ultra 3 Apple Watch, that was a pure waste of money. This foldable phone may rank up there as well. My iPhone 14Pro does everything I need, well enough. I don’t see any reason for any of their new phones for me.

It is the smaller phone. I’ve used the Galaxy Z Fold 8, it’s surprisingly pocketable and easier to use with one hand than you might think. It’s just that you’re paying a lot for a large screen when you want it.
 
Are there cases of some sort or other fall protection for foldable phones?

Not really without making it even more bulky. The worst are the screen protectors. It’s just soft shitty plastic that is softer than my gameboy or palm pilot screens from thirty years ago. It’s the worst part about foldable phones.

I'm with you. Also I don't know if I'd go for it with the microtexturing on the screen. There's enough complaints of it wearing on ipads with glass screens. With a flexible plastic screen I would thing it'd be even worse.

They 100% put a somewhat matte finish on the display to hide scratches which happen basically instantly on these soft plastic screens.

It was to hide the crease IMO. I suspect it will show scratches just fine.

Well, it does that too.

I’m really tired of Apple jumping in on technology dead ends now. Jobs would have never signed off on this or the Vision Pro.

Oh well, at least iOS is finally getting a quality focus year versus more new bugs.
 
I’m probably going to get one. If not version 1 then version 2. It looks sick to me. I’ll need to see it in person however. They did not open and use messages, safari, or mail on the single screen.
I need to see if it’s useable on the 5.4 screen as I don’t want to use it unfolded all the time.

It'll be dandy. On the Z Fold 8 I was surprised at how much time I spent using the cover display. That size and aspect ratio is very usable, but not to the point where you ignore the folding screen.
 
currently on a 16 pro and seems like 18pro (to me) isn't big enough of an upgrade for the price. Maybe wait for the 19 lol.

I'm in a similar boat. Not that the iPhone 18 Pro isn't strong, but my 16 Pro is still quick and takes great photos. My only real gripe is battery life. The 16 Pro drains quickly, especially now that it's two years old; the 18 Pro has significantly longer life out of the gate, and should hold up better over time.

Exactly this. These phones will be super fragile. I’d break it in a single day and I don’t even work outside. I have always had the newest pro max variant and they’ve help up well over the years. But a phone with a crease is a joke. I saw the duo with a dark background and the crease on brand new units is visible. Can’t imaging with time how shitty it will look. No thanks.
 
$1700 CAD for the 18 pro, god dam...

I was holding out as my iphone 11 is showing its age and needs a wiggle to charge, and a trip coming up to Japan, was thinking get an iphone 18 / pro...

I mean, my 11 has lasted 5 years...so when you break down the cost by year...not aweful...

I'm hyped. Been waiting for a foldable phone from apple. Too bad I'm out of university now. This would have been the perfect device for taking notes in class instead of dealing with a crappy 2-in-1 laptop - I've never used one I liked before. Wish I had just gone for a macbook + iPad combo instead. I'd be confident rocking a foldable phone for class though. I think it could be nice for doing remote terminal work as well.

if you go from a large rectangle phone to a small square that folds open you will understand. I could never go back after having a zflip since gen 1.

same for me with the Z Flip, once they had the full outside screen I use it a lot that way.
 
A bit late for this. How many years has Samsung been doing this for, 7? I know Apple was never the first for many things but they often came out with their take fairly quickly and generally had better implementation. Apple is almost a decade behind when it comes to folding phones. I'm sure Apple fans will buy it of course but Apple is certainly not quick with trending setting like it used to be.

There have been a number of instances where Apple took its time. The iPhone came out several years after the first smartphones; the iPad appeared long after the first tablets; the Apple Watch definitely wasn't the first smartwatch.

With foldables, the long wait was arguably due to the early technology's rough state. After all, the first Galaxy Fold was delayed when review units were in people's hands after it became clear the design was far too fragile as-is. It took a few generations before the relabeled Z Fold felt like more than an experiment, and a few more before it felt polished. Apple might not be a first-mover, but it could still be walking in at a good time.
 
my wife had the zfold 3 and it was garbage. so even the 3rd gen of samsungs wasn't ready. I don't know how they have been since then since she just avoided it after that.
 
Folds are still garbage. It’s a fundamentally flawed technology for mass market.

Unless they make useful software for fitness to go along with it, I will pass. The Ultra 3 is a junky mammoth with too many issues for me.

I like my Samsung Fold 7. But I am going back to apple. I got the Ultra 4 on order and getting a 18 pro max 512gb. The apple Fold gives up way to much and it sucks ass for left people. Apple 100% dropped the ball on the fold. Less then 1 hour to go till pre order.
