Apple Unveils iPhone Duo, the First Foldable iPhone

PRESS RELEASE by Nomad76 Today, 15:01 Discuss (16 Comments)
Apple today introduced iPhone Duo, the first foldable iPhone. Opened, it is the thinnest iPhone ever, with a 7.6-inch inner display that provides a large canvas for viewing content, gaming, and multitasking, and a special nano-texture finish that minimizes glare for an unparalleled viewing experience. Closed, the 5.4-inch outer display delivers 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro in a compact, pocketable design. Both displays share the same aspect ratio, so content scales proportionally, ensuring visual continuity. iPhone Duo is built to last with an innovative hardware design and a precision hinge that offers a smooth, satisfying feel with every use. Powered by the new A20 Pro, iPhone Duo features an advanced thermal management system with a custom-designed vapor chamber and a dual-battery architecture, delivering pro performance and impressive all-day battery life. The advanced camera system takes stunning photos and videos, with the folding design unlocking fun new ways to use the camera that aren't possible on any other iPhone. iOS 27 is reimagined, remaining familiar and intuitive while adapting to the versatile ways users can interact with iPhone Duo. And with Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, iPhone Duo brings powerful AI capabilities together with a user's personal context.

iPhone Duo is available in two refined colors: star white and night sky. Pre-orders begin Friday, October 16, with availability beginning Friday, October 23.

They are also pulling an LG with their new watch.

Because permanently spying watches is what we needed on top of the tv's.

I just watched how they did the UI for the Duo. It's freakin slick. It looks like the system is moving focus between opening and closing. I wanted to be like "Meh... not for me." but if I was in the market for a new phone, the iPhone Duo would be on my shortlist.

Software looks good, but it’s still just a plastic screen with a crease. I don’t get the hype of foldable phones at all.
$2k - $3k for what amounts to an overpriced iPad. The people who buy these are the same that bought into the Vision Pro. It's a status symbol or tech fashion. The fact the Duo only comes in two color choices speaks to me Apple expects low volume sales. I'm actually surprised they got the base model cost as low as $2k, I was expecting $3k base given the current climate.

Not buying into the marketing. The Duo doesn't look at all comfortable in your hand when folded. I'd be deathly scared of dropping such an expensive piece of hardware. I guess popsockets will be a thing, but comical.

Same. I'll still keep using my iPhone mini. Come on Apple, give me a smaller smart phone.
2022 iPhone SE was their last reasonably sized iPhone. Sadly, I don't think Apple cares about that market segment right now. My mom has one and I keep telling her to try and stretch it out a few more years. Looks bleak every year when the smallest phone announced is 6.1". You'd think Apple would see cramming all that tech into a smaller phone as a challenge.

I heard my coworker mention Duo in reference to Apple today. This is what I told him I thought he was talking about. I got excited they were going to make it for real.

I'll probably buy one; I'm fairly all-in on the ecosystem and the open/close animation is sweet. This is absolutely a frivolous, unnecessary expense, but my life is full of such things that I don't need but do want. This mostly checks that box. I am a bit disappointed at not having a robust telephoto capability.

IMO they are likely selling it for a loss. I think it’s a flop. It’s the modern trend of Apple now chasing trends versus making the trend.

That folding phone does look sharp except brittle as well. If I need a bigger screen, a laptop or desktop is oh so much better. It is still a phone.

I have an Ultra 3 Apple Watch, that was a pure waste of money. This foldable phone may rank up there as well. My iPhone 14Pro does everything I need, well enough. I don’t see any reason for any of their new phones for me.

It is the smaller phone. I’ve used the Galaxy Z Fold 8, it’s surprisingly pocketable and easier to use with one hand than you might think. It’s just that you’re paying a lot for a large screen when you want it.
