Hi everyone, I recently resurrected my personal subject CRT in August 2026. It's in pristine condition, and thanks to the information at CRTDatabase I was able to get it working at 2048x1536@80Hz in Windows 11 on an RTX 5090 using a DP1.4MtoF cable, a Startech DP2VGAHD20, and a short VGA Cable.

I did have to use the nVidia Control Panel to set the custom resolution since otherwise, the limit was 1920x1440@85Hz recognized by Windows.

I am hearing it's possible to drive this CRT to higher resolutions, albeit at lower frequencies. I think I am running into bandwidth limitations of the Startech DAC, which is apparently 375MHz, and that I would need 534MHz to unlock the potential of the 2070SB.

I cannot find any *available* DACs that will drive this bandwidth - suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I don't think you will find anything above 400MHz and that was from the older AMD cards that still offered VGA.

I had one of these years ago, I had it at a maximum 2048x1536 but I think it was 86 Hz not 80. That, from what I remember was the highest resolution you could run at, but you could downres it to 1024x768 and run it at 120Hz. The most reliable/best picture quality I had with it was 1600x1200 at something like 110Hz.

I had one of these back in the day but not such an optimized setup (DaC to short vga cable). I am curious does it actually look better at max res? I remember it looking better at slightly lower than max res because it couldn’t actually resolve all the detail. Could have been a limitation of my cabling etc at the time.

Depends on what you're driving them with. Back in the day I'd run 2048x1536 because it was either faster or looked better than 1600x1200 with AA enabled depending on what AA settings I used. Max res, AA off, just let it smear a bit. If you're driving a CRT with a modern card, nah, lower the res to recommended and turn AA on.

You won the lottery with your unit then. I downres'd to 1600 because of the bleeding I got at 2048.

I never had the screen this thread is about. I'd intended my post as just a general comment about pushing CRTs to higher than "recommended" resolution. I mostly did this on a Hitachi CM823F. It was a 21" shadow mask tube, and sharper than most aperture grill models. Early AA was either render at higher res and downscale or more or less just smeared the image depending on what mode you used. The first on looked great but was a huge performance hit. The second looked messy. I thought overdriving the monitor looked better.
 
This monitor is a high end Diamondtron tube. Crank it to 2048 if you can and let it rip. I'm lowkey jealous. Great monitors.
