Gears of War: E-Day

hopefully by that time Microsoft will have a decent stable of first party exclusives...at least PlayStation has created value for their brand and is worth buying for the exclusives
Not this generation. PlayStation is still riding the good will they generated with the PS4. Sales have been declining since the PSN and console price increase compared to the PS4, so the value proposition to consumers is declining.

And they have less exclusives. I worry about Sony buying up more studios to get more exclusives, at this point Microsoft buying them up would be better. I hope most studios would choose not to take exclusive deals because loosing out on PC is too big of a market, and I wounder if Sony has enough money to offer many studios enough money to let 40-50% of their sales slide. But if Sony goes on a buying spree, they would have no choice.

Neither company buying studios is a good thing. They are both ass and MS has been worst with them. Sony is getting close to 100 million unit sold. Far from flop and there are plenty games out there for it.

I mean the game is going to sell, but how the fuck did they spend 400 million on this? Just seems absolutely insane.

That's like the same cost as RDR2.

Defiantly not well enough to make back 400 million. Maybe would have had a chance if was released in PS5. I might do GP for a month for it.

Seems like the original games sold around 6 million copies. More recent games have sold less. Or maybe more overall, but likely with deep discounts. In a modern context they are not that popular. I know budgets can be big and production values are high but still, $400 million is a lot for it considering it is a UE game and the general template is already there. Even with multiplayer that seems a bit high. And as popular as the MP was back in the day, I really doubt it has anywhere near the draw of modern MP game player counts.

Like me a bunch will play it through game pass. That will cut into sales big time.

This series was never that popular the original was but the last two games were forgettable.

2 sold close to 7 million, 3 sold 6.5 million. No exact data on more recent releases, though they're estimated to only be around 1 million a piece, which is not close to enough to break even on a $400 million budget. The series has not done well since Epic stopped making it, much like Halo and Bungie.

So Microsoft allowed the budget of this game to balloon up to 400 mil and then decided to make it an Xbox console exclusive...

This might be the end of The Coalition and People Can Fly.

it is not "exclusive", if it is available on steam. but xbox is too poor to take on Valve

"Console" exclusive meaning that it's only going to be available on Xbox consoles not PS5. They mentioned that it's going to be on PC day one already.

pc can be xbox pc app also.

on steam they have to pay 30% to Valve

when the future comes where they have to scrap hardware then their store will also be useless and they'll end up paying 30% to Valve on all their sales

on console it is exclusive to xbox, thats it, this isnt rocket surgery...

Erm, but, there is a console on my PC ☝️🤓

I've always loved GoW. How did they spend that much on this game, though? Good grief. Did 200 million go to the CEO?
Linear game, not a openworld type, that make it strange.

They redid every asset from scratch apparently, maybe a lot of the unreal 5 tooling-pipeline was made here and the expense put on that title.

Took 6 years, which make salary cost explode, but considering one fhe studio making this is Epic own and the growing pain of Unreal 5... maybe that were lot of the cost come from. https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/06/07/gears-of-war-eday-direct-xbox-games-showcase-2026/, stuff like Unreal 5 megalights and what not.

Other one, if it took 6 years for something releasing now... they would have had a possible worse case of impacted by Covid

When you look n your task manager on Windows, you will see both, process called console windows host, and some others called command prompt that is one of the application used to talk to it.

You can use many other say to talk to the windows consoles, like: https://alacritty.org/ or microsoft powershell, at least that what I thought the wikipedia page say otherwise, but I do not think console was replaced by the terminal as they say, I have many console window host process running...

A console is any text only based input/output program

I'm a little amused that they explicitly called out the tendency for games to not have shadow casting muzzle flashes.

Well, Gears does now. Everything casts real-time shadows. It's all raytraced now, using Megalights.

So, Hardware Lumen and Megalights - 60 fps target on consoles.

Are we finally at the turning point for the engine?

Mega Geomety is next gen for ray tracing. It's basically utilizing geometry the same away as nanite does so they can have way more detail in the lighting.
The way they do ray tracing for games now is have low polygon versions of everything and trace the rays on them and you lose a ton of detail.
