The Ryzen 7 5800X3D 10th Anniversary Edition is not a new CPU—it's the exact same chip AMD launched back in 2022, the famous processor that first brought 3D V-Cache to the desktop. It features eight Zen 3 cores using TSMC's 7 nm process, 96 MB of total L3 cache (32 MB on-die plus a 64 MB stacked V-Cache die), base clock is set to 3.4 GHz, boost ticks at 4.5 GHz, on Socket AM4. Nothing about the silicon has changed; what's new is the retail packaging and, above all, the price. AMD is re-releasing it as a limited 10th Anniversary Edition, bundling a Carbice thermal pad, and selling it for $340 rather than the $450 the 5800X3D ran at back in the day. Just to make this clear—this is old Zen 3 hardware—there are no magic improvements backported from Zen 4 or Zen 5. This means the architecture is outdated, and only 3D V-Cache is what lets it compete with today's modern CPU architectures in gaming.“

The author leaves out the very large YMMV that attaches to that statement. I have both the 5900X and the 5800X3D and for games like Trainz: A New Era and Trainz19 the 5800X is inadequate. The 5800X3D will run these titles smooth when CPU loading is high, the 5900X stutters horribly (unplayable). This is with everything the same, the only difference being the processor. Stuff like this makes the X3D tricky to evaluate. Scuttlebutt I've read suggests titles like Flight Simulator and Fall Out 4 see similar performance gains (open world games).

I'm not afraid to admit that I really like the AM4 platform. I have several AM4 MSI boards and they are rock solid and operate without drama. The DDR4 was dirt cheap and easy, $60 for 32GB DDR4-3600 with easy-peasy XMP overclocking.

Another limitation past AM4, although not likely to affect a lot of people, is SLI support stops after AM4. A niche concern these days, but I'm getting a great deal of mileage out of a pair of undervolted/overclocked Titan Xp's acquired for a bit over $300 and performing better than 4070TI or 5070. I play old games, so RT means nothing to me.

Stepping to AM5 or more modern Intel platform means replacing a lot, and that was before DDR5 pricing became insane.

IMHO, the overall review is a pretty fair look at the 5800X3D.

ETA: The other chip is a 5900x, not 5800x. The performance difference is not due to the cores, during gaming the 5900X runs six cores on one CCD. The 5800X3D, even when limited to six cores, still blows it out of the water. For the titles I mentioned, the eight cores of the 5800x aren't going to be significantly better than the 5900x running on six.

I have a 5800X3D my ITX gaming rig and it's pretty great for that application. The platform is stable, it's easy to cool, and gaming performance is stellar even if it's not the top dog. I have yet to feel like it's holding the system back in games or standard usage. If it died and I had to build a new system would I build another one? Nope, 32GB DDR5 is only about $100 more than DDR4 at MicroCenter so I'd bite that bullet and build a 9800X3D instead.

Im less confused about why this chip is re-released, and more confused on why techpowerup re-reviewed the same chip again. I guess to have updated benchmark scores?

Yes I've seen that, and I also bought one of the new 5800X3Ds. It appears they did a good job because I could not detect a lick of difference between them. Performance and temp is an exact match, DDR4 timings are exactly the same, and the motherboard bios did not care.

I'm not 100% sure the return of this part is due to DDR5 prices. I think AMD had a stockpile and was looking at the eyewatering prices used 5800X3Ds were fetching on the likes of ebay. Perhaps it is the combination. Availability on these has been solid since re-launch and they have been $300 for over a month at MC with 25+ in stock every time I've looked.

I also did not bother with the carbice pad, old school thermal compound and a $32 Thermalright cooler.

Based on that toms article:

I would say the RAM crysis is way too recent, for AMD to have reacted with re-engineering an old product to a modern production line. We haven't even been experiencing truly crazy prices and supply issues due to AI contracts, for a full year, really.
Its more likely they were already doing it, to align with the AM4 10 year anniversary.

The way I read that is it was the cache bonding process that had to be updated. I think the underlying processor is the same and may be leftover inventory. It's hard to know for sure.

DDR5 prices likely had an impact. The eyewatering prices on eBay were because people were looking to max out their existing platform to avoid having to do a full conversion. All x3D derivatives were snapped up over the years, with the community asking for more. Any marketing person at least half paying attention would have noticed the obvious opportunity here. They likely also had a stockpile, but there was an obvious market for this product, and it did require some engineering work to put out.

Take note it isn't just the 5800x3D that's making an old-tech comeback. Nvidia relaunched the 3060. Sure, they might have had extra cores, but GDDR6 is less expensive compared to GDDR7, and the 3060 is a 12GB card, so this gave them an option to hit a market which still exists. Same kind of idea.

"leftover" or "stockpile" inventory wouldn't be correct for 8 core Zen 3 chips. AMD never stopped producing them.

And every Zen 3 CCD is made with attachment points for the cache. Even though most of them never have the cache attached. AMD made it a part of the base design from the start. Even before they had finalized the bonding process which allowed them to actually ship the first 5800X3D. Zen 3 CPUs shipped with the 'attachment points', from day 1.

Technically, it's not the exact same, AMD/TSMC redid the stacking. But that shouldn't change performance or really be noticable at all.
Hardware Unboxed found the operating behavior to be extremely similar.

Makes sense, really. AMD probably bins chips for the 5800X3D, due to thermal and voltage constraints from top mounted Vcache design. My point is that the silicon quality used for 5800X3D, are probably very similar.
Whereas Der8auer and Gamers Nexus found that regular Zen 4 chips have a pretty wide range of voltage/power/clocking behavior under "stock" configuration. Even though they still deliver the advertised performance.

The Carbice thermal pad was the most interesting part of the review. Something I may use in my next build because I never felt the need to upgrade a CPU. By them time I do need a new CPU its for a whole new PC build on a new CPU architecture with a new mobo, case, etc.
 
Ancient Zen 3 architecture

That seems like a melodramatic exaggeration. The 5800X3D was released the same year as the RTX 4090. Are we going to call the RTX 4090 "ancient" now? Also, all current consoles (PS5, XBox series X) are still on Zen 2, so...

Weak application and multithreaded performance

This also seems like a stretch. While not super fast, calling it "weak" without context is meaningless. In reality it's still going to be a very fast CPU for just about anything someone does with their computer. If they really need more than 8-cores/16-threads, they probably already know going into that and probably wouldn't be looking at the 5800X3D to begin with. I personally went from a 5900X to a 5800X3D and it was a huge upgrade, despite losing 4 cores.

Last we heard from Noctua, the Carbice pads under their branding as "NT-CP1", will be available in September.

This page is incredibly confusing bait.

The conclusion in Linus' video, is that you can put a 5800X3D into older X370 motherboards-----and they work great. And give you the majority of the performance improvement.

This is a VERY OLD conclusion. As this same testing was done not long after X370 boards first got BIOS updates for 5800X3D.

Linus's video also concludes that the X3D chip didn't seem to care so much, that the RAM Speed was a lot lower in their X370 board. And that is ANOTHER conclusion for X3D, which has been WELL TESTED RECENTLY.

Keep in mind, my opinion on that doesn't mean much. I had plenty of old school thermal compound around and it was a known thing. Plus the mount was temporary. I may go back to it.

When running things like Prime95, the 5800X3D can temp spike, but it stays under 80C. When running games, it runs cool, 55-60C with a low cost air cooler. The 5900x, runnning the same title, runs considerably hotter and burns more power.

WRT to the posts above about performance, I don't know why anybody would think the new 5800X3D would behave any better than the old one. I've only dropped the new 5800X3D into a MSI X570s ACE Max and it worked same same.

The 5800X3D is a nice gaming processor and even for general purpose desktop, it certainly is not slow. It does not feel any different than my 5900x unless I'm doing something that actually uses the extra cores. Being single CCD, it does not need fancy thread management.

One other thing I looked into due to memory prices was how it performed with a single DDR4 stick versus two. I could not see a difference -- the 3D cache, when it can be utilized, appears to be very effective at masking the latency and speed of the DDR4 memory.
