Memory pricing is a hot topic these days as consumers struggle to purchase any, with little hope of prices dropping. Memory costs are reaching new all-time highs, with various trackers reporting that prices in August this year are up to five times more expensive than the same month last year for DRAM kits. According to data from PCPartPicker, DDR5 memory prices have increased anywhere from 372% for 2 x 16 GB 4,800 MT/s kits to 485% for 2 x 32 GB kits running at 5,600 MT/s. A 6,000 MT/s 64 GB kit, which used to cost $222, is now considered a luxury investment at an astounding $1,272. At the TechPowerUp editorial team, we remember when that was the entire budget for building a very decent high-end gaming PC.

PCPartPicker also shows that DDR4 kits have increased by 120% to 177%, which is still significant but mainly affects those using the older DDR4 technology. For those on a newer DDR5 platform, the change is much more pronounced. Note that PCPartPicker only tracks pricing in the United States, while German websites like ComputerBase have reported a 345% year-over-year increase for August in the Eurozone, which is much higher than anything seen before. With no signs of slowing down, we might see even higher year-over-year changes.“
 
Ram that has yet to be made being sold has very little impact in current ram available and its price. What it does it helping financing the current build out of future capacity.
And we're paying for it, much like our electricity bill.

Right now they are a bit slow and dram is a bit of an world affair, as long as china made memory is used, it reduced world price a bit regardless of by who, and everything they make is bought.

Ram is currently expensive because physical ram made is all buying bought and used at record pace, do you think ram makers will offer a rebate and not sell the highest price they can if they were not building new capacity for future production at record pace ? maybe, but why would they ?

Maybe by an air, dram is such a fungible commodity and CXMT offering zero rebate over the competition and the world demand big enough that it is probably marginal. In the sense that every bytes the rest of the world buy from CXMT, they would have try to buy it from USA approved company instead and putted pressure, them buying from CXMT release it in a very similar way than american company buying from CXMT would have.

It become a matter if CXMT become so big supply wise and american company demand is so much larger than the rest of the world combined

Of course, we already know that HBM consumes around 3x as many silicon wafers as conventional DRAM.

while true at the same wafer node used, upgrading an DDR4 era 20nm line into an advanced HBM3 type level will still end up with more byte of dram per wafer made, despite the 3x cost caused by the lower yield and via holes.

Well that stinks, I liked their stuff overall, but it makes some sense for them to do this. I'm glad at least some of their stuff is going to continue to be produced, I've had a PineTime since a few months after release, it's nice if you desire a smart, non tracking device really.

To be fair, every country does this, they're just the main manufacturer of goods these days, so they get noticed the most. There are no international patents, just agreement pacts and what not. Just like how Japan's auto industry copied the U.S.'s and improved upon it from the 80's onward. Germany and Japan are considered to have the best engineered and manufactured products. America used to be in the same boat, but we hardly engineer, let alone manufacture, anything these days.

Is it just Apple or can other manufacturers buy CXMT? Because that's a huge edge given to Apple if that were the case.
 
Good thing I still have a slew of DDR3 RAM and Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge CPU's and MB's as back-ups...
I look in the electronics bin when I do my weekly run to the recycling center. I have managed to score enough 8gb sticks of slower ddr4 2400 and 2133 to max out my backup x99 build, plus have found some older ddr3, as well. Some companies are still e-wasting office computers without removing the memory.

I guess somehow Starfield was the point of no return to normal ever again when that game released back then Best Buy was doing some combo packages with a Ryzen 5 7600x / Gibabyte B650 Aorus Elite XT board plus the game for $289, AM5 was not selling well back then if I remember correct, so back then I just bought some Curcial Pro DDR 5 / 5600mhz in 2 x 16GB kit for $79.99 to get that platform up and running, that kit just lays here now in the package with about 2 weeks run time on them as to be replaced with in that time frame for some G - Skill Trident Z NEO DDR5 / 6000mhz CL 30 in 2 x 16GB kit that cost me $115 back then.

$80 for 32GB of DDR5/5600mhz in 2026.

Samsung Confirms HBM4E Memory Running at 16 Gbps Per Pin

At the Hot Chips 2026 conference's Advance Program, Samsung's Sangwook Han confirmed that the company is preparing to ship HBM4E memory with speeds of 16 Gbps per pin. This is a significant confidence boost for Samsung's Semiconductor division, which has been shipping HBM4E with speeds of 14 Gbps per pin since late May of this year. Essentially, the company confirmed that its scaling progress is going well, and HBM4E represents another milestone in high-bandwidth memory technology that it can produce with impressive speed. Samsung's own HBM4 is now shipping at 11.7 Gbps, making the jump to HBM4E even more impressive.

Currently, at 14 Gbps per pin and 2,048 pins per HBM4E stack, Samsung can achieve a maximum bandwidth of 3.6 TB/s. However, at 16 Gbps, this maximum memory bandwidth will increase to 4 TB/s for a single HBM4E stack. Considering about a dozen memory stacks per AI accelerator or GPU, the total memory bandwidth is remarkable. The company is also currently offering this memory in a 12-layer (or 12-high) configuration with a memory density of 48 GB per stack. However, customer requirements will also include 8-layer 32 GB and 16-layer 64 GB stacks in the future.“
 
Samsung Electronics' DRAM wafer capacity will grow only marginally through 2027, with investment directed at node migration and line conversions rather than aggressive wafer-capacity expansion, according to Omdia data obtained by Chosun Biz.”
In actual bits is what also matter, wafer capacity in number versus in density lead to the same things here. growth in petabytes of dram produced, with samsung seem to be quite competitive in absolute and %.

Looking at wafer count for wafer count is a bit missing the points of what dram production is trying to do.... dram bits shipped.
 
This memory shortage is killing me. I am about to drop $16k on 512gb vcolor ddr5 for work, I literally can't stomach this. And RTX 6000 Pro have more than doubled in price in the last few months.
But you did pay for it. That's justifying their price increases.
