Will 2027 next gen video cards get rid of the 12VHPWR and be safer?

We all know the stories about the RTX-4xxx series and some of the 5xxx series having issues with the cable connection powering these beefy video cards. So now it's been 2 generations of video cards, do we think nVidia will have a new type and safer power connector on the next gen RTX-6000 series?

Not likely. I imagine they'll make an effort to double down (second plug or marketing magic) long before they accept that investment as a loss/failure
 
Slight revision of the current latest revision (12v-2x6) would be my guess with some load balancing tech and sensor, datacenter side of things is on 48 volt and quite different (busbar), so not sure how much focus there is on that one.
 
Any update as to when the RTX-6000 Series is revealed? nVidia was on a 2 year release cycle for years, every even year, like 2018, 2020, 2022, 2024, was thinking this Fall 2026 but that's not happening, as the 5000 Series was delayed till 2025, and missed the 2024 release.

Thanks for the info, isn't the 6000 series supposed to be a big leap again, sort of like the 4000 series compared to the 3000 series, where the 4090 was a MAJOR leap over the 3090.

it is unllike the 5000 series a big node leap (TSMC 3N), I think the N1x gpu chiplet is already on TSMC 3N and give some idea of the density gain for Nvidia cores it seem impressive but not easy to distinguish the gain made from non having a gddr memory controler and other simpler element, but would not expect the monster gain from going to Samsung 8N to TSMC we saw on lovelace, they will not be able to reduce die size like they did back then if they want nice gen->gen boost
 
The $1,500 RTX-4090 was like 60% to 70% better than the $1,400 RTX-3090, and the price only went up a hundred bucks.

But the 5090 was a freaking joke of only like 25% to 30% faster than the 4090 but was massively more expensive. I hope we don't see that again with the 6090, just being a hair faster but costing a billion dollars more.

With how little Nvidia makes on GPUs for us it's probably hardly worth the silicone to takes chips away form the AI for us. So expect it to be even worse of here you go here is your 5k you if you want if it not we don't care.

Not a chance. Not only will they continue using the 12V-2x6, but they'll also continue preventing their board partners from using anything else.

I am sure they push strongly as the reference pcb and reference everything design for the high power card would have been made around that standard, but the Asus-MSI of the world are big boys. The new connector is cheaper, people love using cheaper thing.

I am sure they push strongly as the reference pcb and reference everything design for the high power card would have been made around that standard, but the Asus-MSI of the world are big boys. The new connector is cheaper, people love using cheaper thing.

My understanding is they require use of 12v-2x6 for any of the higher power draw cards (80 or 90 series). They are more flexible on the lower power ones. The BTF connector is an Asus initiative and perhaps they came to an agreement with Nvidia on that, but I've read from multiple sources than Nvidia will now allow, say, a 3x8-pin configuration for a 5090, which is why you're not seeing companies offer that as an option despite customers asking them for it. Even if they new connector is cheaper, people will pay an extra few bucks for one they're more confident in.
 
My 4090 (purchased at the release) is still kicking ass in my daughter's system as well as my 5090 (purchased shortly after release) in my system. They get gamed the hell out of. I have no concerns.

Then I bought a Thermal Grizzly WireView Pro II and found that two of my 5090's pins were out of balance, with one exceeding the 9.1A rating (over 10.5A) while the other was at or below 6A. I purchased a new cable and it's been good since then - but it was a ticking time bomb that I was completely unaware of as someone who knows not to torque the cable to the side and to fully seat the connector.

I'd heard that the 4090 has more protections (fuses) than the 5090 does, which is why I decided to get the WireView and see if there was an issue. I'm glad that I did, because I plan on keeping this 5090 for a long time.

I'm good. I feel my cable when gaming and it isn't hot. Almost all don't have problems. I don't plan on buying anything extra because it isn't a problem statistically.

My cables weren't hot either, but I've got four 180mm fans blowing in from the side which may have helped keep things from getting worse. Here's hoping your 5090 will continue to be just fine!

You sir are definitely not and electrician and definitely don't understand the problem and I wish I wasn't an electrician that didn't realize how garbage this cable is. The problem is with each gaming cycle those tiny ass contact points heat up(by the time the cable feels warm it's to late the damage is done) and expand just a tiny tiny bit and when it cools they shrink. That makes higher resistance which make more heat. Over x numbers of cycles it will fail 100% it's just matter of time. I don't see any 5090 running the full 600w used heavily being around in 5 years. Now if you limit it to 4090 levels it probably will be ok.
 
It relies on slide resistance of the connector, when the connector is to thin or small the spring in the connector becomes lose with every heat cycle which creats more resistance and heat.
Resistance creates heat which creates failure.

For what it's worth, my 4090 FE can draw 660W while my 5090 is limited to 600W. Although I agree it's an absolute shit connector.

Built in obsolescence at its finest.
 
My bet is they'll quietly stop using 12V-2x6 at max power. Next gen top end cards will go over 600W and have 2, while 80 cards will be 450W or less and NV will tighten the specs on line loading so they're less likely to get out of balance and melt. But nah they're not gonna admit defeat and come up with some new spec for power adaptors.
