Anyway to make a 10700K SKU downclock and behave like the non K SKU

As the title states I have a i7-10700K that came from my now mostly broken HP EliteDesk 800 G6 DM

I had an accident (my desk fell over and the PC got damaged ) with my mini PC that I got from dbwillis.

I want to buy another mini PC but all of the ones I see available (that can take a DGPU can only use the T or non K SKU

I want a DGPU as the Intel ones while Okay for my uses seem to have quite a lot of driver errors! That cause LiveKernalEvent Code 141 errors

I'd wonder if they won't work with the K or just don't say they will.

My Intel knowledge is poor these days, but I know AMD systems can usually set the TDP and mini systems that are TDP limited usually will work with bigger cpus, but have to keep a lower TDP setting. It usually ends up not a big deal, you get like 90% of the perf at 50% power anyway (this statistic is 85% made up).

But bios could flag the chip and say no. And that would be no fun.

I built an i7-10700 machine for my dad back in 2020. Gaming board, so it defaulted to no power limits and thermal throttled right away during a stress test. "65W" 10700 non-k will pull 250W+ with power limits disabled. Also built an i3-10100 box for myself as a NAS/home server. Both of those boards let me set the power limits to whatever I wanted.

A lot of OEM systems won't let you do that. They'll just run the "official" power limits.

A "k" chip in a mini-pc might not work at all, it might overheat, could draw too much power and fry your vrms... If it can get to the bios and the mini-pc has adjustable power limits it should be fine, but you still need a mini-pc that doesn't just refuse to boot with an unsupported CPU and allows setting power limits.

So it's platform dependent. Hope you can at least salvage the ram & ssd from the broken machine.

Yeah the Ram and SSDs are okay (that is a good thing especially these days post AI slop price gouging) it was just the case and USB ports and one display port that were damaged! The only USBs that were not damaged were the front ones so it will be okay for now until I can get a replacement unit

That's good and at least you're not in a hurry. Must fix right now is much more likely to get expensive.
