Yes and no. American companies get lots of top-ups just in other ways that are less obvious. Lots of protectionist stuff going on in the USA long before Trump came to power. Any time US companies look like they're running into trouble you can count on tariffs, or low interest loans, or mysterious new grant money to pop out of nowhere and benefit them. Lots of no-bid military contracts with lots of room for extra billing with little to no oversight. The US and China are not alone in this either. Every nation does it ... they just all act like they're innocent little doves fighting the bad guys.

That's a very fair assessment. Cronyism has definitely dominated for some time and distorted the ability of the market to do its job, and it's not unique to China, although in China's case, they've been a lot more overt about it and have explicitly bent the WTO to their will over the years to enable them to get away with things other countries can't within the rules. The current US administration is a bit more overt about it than ones in times past, even going so far as to take unusual steps like buying a direct stake in select companies as I mentioned earlier, no doubt in an effort to preserve the ability of otherwise failing companies to endure in order to ensure a strategic player doesn't die off.

While this information isn't surprising, the timeline is now set for the second half of 2026, which began in July. Earlier rumors suggested mass production would occur in the first half of the year, as testing and trial production were completed in March. Previously, SK hynix announced that its LPDDR6 memory modules would feature a 16 Gb capacity on the sixth-generation 10 nm node, known as 1c. This is all leverage coming out of the system. The South Koreans were putting hilarious amounts of leverage on which put in a nearly vertical spike in the Kospi. That was never sustainable, but it doesn't change the demand picture on the ground for the product itself according to the earnings reports of the companies in question.

It's a reflection of DRAM vs HBM supply. Companies are shifting to HBM with their existing production capacity, so they're producing less VRAM as a result of that since they're supply constrained.

That part of why the non HBM dram (HBM is just one type of dram...) did not grow as much as it would have, it is still growing in bits (wafer production exploded and density has well, making up for the transition)

Here it is a reflection of the tier 1 (amazon, google, apple, nvidia, meta, etc...) and tier 2 (HP-dell, etc...) ability to get ram being so much higher than the tier 3 (Kingston) people.

Yes, that's the other part of it. The DRAM makers like Kingston, etc, are getting less supply sent over to them, so that's problem #1 from their perspective. The other problem is that more capacity is being redirected to HBM rather than consumer DRAM. The point is we're supply constrained right now, and the priorities of the manufacturers are shifting, as one really should expect, to customers that are willing to buy more product, with fewer individual POs, and are willing to pay a higher price. This will continue until either there's an increase in Fab capacity, or a decrease in datacenter demand, or both.

One senior US official told The Post there is “a real suspicion that a Chinese Communist Party intervention played a role in this so-called IPO” just six weeks after the Pentagon designated the firm as a Chinese military company.

So, like almost every modern vehicle right now that has a cheap cellular connection baked in for "maintenance purposes" and not at all to sell your data. As far as I'm concerned, there's no difference between China having control of a data connection into my vehicle or a big US company. They're both screwing me over.

If it weren't for Micron et al selling all their capacity to US AI companies the Pentagon wouldn't even have been in the position to have relaxed their official stance against CXMT earlier in the year. Unfortunately there isn't much of a choice when supply is so constrained.

Either way it seems unlikely the US military would put anything into devices that hasn't seen rigorous analysis. Though recall when there were allegations about a Supermicro supply chain compromise years back and the US companies alleged to have received compromised servers did their own X-ray and security analysis (something IIRC they mentioned was actually routine for them) and didn't find the claimed backdoor chip.

The cheaper something like AI inference get, the more demands for it we can expect to see, it would take incredible gain in hardware-software to make up for that jump in demand that come with lower price. It is hard to phantom what the demand look like when free and if there is a limit on it, could be the most elastic think ever.

DDR 5 will be old news at some point, but DDR6 capacity will come in part from upgrading DDR5 level wafer infrastructure, it is not a pure additive play and there is a balancing act for a while, newer node have lower yield but higher bit density, that make making more volume not that straitforward.

We will also see a lot of tier use of older hardware, because they will be useful in some step of the whole process, ddr5 cpu system with -H100 level gpu will be used in pre-fill of Cerebras type inference or used for easier model, a bit like very old TPU are still used to recommend next youtube video and generate google map itinerary, the gap in task complexity will be ultra vast.

H100 gpu could be easily have a 10+ years high level life cycle because of grog-cerebras and how valuable hbm3 could continue to be for years.

I think that 2 big difference with crypto, crypto had a certain level of demand, sure if you make transaction cheaper they would become more popular but still seem a fixed max use, etherum treatment becoming much cheaper did not made daily usage explode and the gap between task was not vast (some nicher coin wanted to exploit, but a lot of the field was a couple of big player)

Interesting, yeah I guess it boils down to usage growing with efficiency (and reduced cost) or just plateau-ing.

Anecdotally, I've seen friends who have hit the limit for what is useful in day-to-day usage, any more and they would be paying thousands of dollars in tokens for diminishing returns.

I think we'd see more people fall into weird relationship type stuff if it was cheap or free.

A report from Channel Gate, citing sources within AMD’s supply chain, claims that AMD will increase its Radeon GPU kit prices by “at least 10%” for its GPU partners. These price increases are due to come into effect in August, raising the price of newly manufactured GPUs.

AMD’s GPU kits are how GPU cores and memory are supplied to AMD’s AIB (Add-In Board) partners. It has been claimed that AMD wanted to implement this change earlier, but delayed the decision until Nvidia raised its prices. With the price of memory and silicon rising, this price increase could be seen as inevitable. By delaying their price increase until after Nvidia’s, AMD secured a temporary advantage over its rival.

AMD has notified AIB brand manufacturers of a uniform price increase in August.
According to information confirmed by AMD’s internal supply chain, AMD finalised a plan last month to increase the supply price of bundled GPU cores and memory, but did not immediately implement the price increase, choosing instead to postpone its implementation. This was mainly due to the current weak recovery phase in the consumer graphics card market, high price sensitivity at the end-user level, existing inventory still needing to be digested, and the fact that NV series graphics card prices have not yet increased. This was to avoid the risk of declining product competitiveness and market share loss from a hasty price adjustment during a period of demand pressure.
However, with the confirmed price increase for the NV series, AMD has notified AIB brand manufacturers that the price increase will be at least 10%, and all brands will officially implement the price increase uniformly starting next month. At that time, the price positioning is expected to be similar to that of NV series graphics cards.”

Apple's stock "fell just shy of 10% on Friday," reports Yahoo Finance, "after CEO Tim Cook warned about the impact of the global memory shortage on the company's business."During Apple's third quarter earnings call, Cook said the company paid significantly more for memory in the quarter and expects that to further increase in the current period. And while Apple is able to offset some of that price jump, it won't be able to tackle it all... The CEO said that iPhone and Mac sales outpaced Apple's own expectations and that a lack of flexibility in the supply chain is making it more difficult to keep up with demand.
Yahoo Finance cited an investment analyst who predicts overall gross margins for Apple's iPhone could drop from 38% to 34.5%. But another analyst sees a scenario where Apple "raises iPhone prices, unit growth will slow, and as unit growth slows, so will user growth, which we think ultimately will slow Services growth." (Still, Yahoo Finance predicts Apple's new leasing program "could help address those concerns.")

Apple has another controversial option, according to the blog 9to5Mac:Bloomberg reports that US senators from both sides of the aisle are urging Apple CEO Tim Cook to commit by August 21 to not using memory chips from Chinese suppliers CXMT and YMTC....

Apple is not required to obtain U.S. government approval to purchase chips from the companies, but doing so without the administration's support could expose it to significant political ramifications. Which is why, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal ahead of Apple's recent price hikes, Tim Cook said that "everything needs to be on the table," adding that "we should look at all supply...." More recently, the Journal reported that Apple's use of Chinese memory chips could extend beyond China, with the company seeking the administration's blessing to use components from CXMT and YMTC in products sold elsewhere outside the US. The report also detailed Micron's efforts to persuade the administration to reject Apple's request, arguing that allowing Chinese suppliers into Apple's supply chain could undermine domestic memory production...

[Bloomberg's reported that U.S. lawmakers warned] other companies could follow Apple's lead, potentially undermining domestic memory production and planned investments in states such as Indiana, Idaho, New York, and Virginia... [T]he senators sought details about any information Apple has shared with CXMT during the component qualification process, noting that the transfer of controlled technical information to advanced chipmaking facilities in China may require a Commerce Department license.

The blog MacRumors notes that Apple has already increased prices for Macs and iPads in June because of surging memory prices. Apple CEO Tim Cook said Thursday "we did it because we're in what I would characterize as a 100-year flood on memory pricing with exponential increases in memory prices."Cook did not comment on whether Apple plans to raise iPhone prices when the iPhone 18 Pro models and first foldable launch this September, but multiple analysts believe prices will go up. Cook said Apple is expecting to pay higher memory costs in the September quarter, though Apple will be able to partially offset it with lower costs on some non-memory components and a stockpile of inventory.
Sky News points out that "It was Tim Cook's final earnings appearance before his retirement after 15 years at the helm of the company."Apple, which recently topped Nvidia as the most valuable listed company, has been largely spared the volatility in share price seen by chipmakers and big spenders on artificial intelligence. Apple continues to generate cash without the huge investment spending that its Wall St peers are dealing with "and that showed across most parts of the operation," said Thomas Monteiro, an analyst at Investing.com."
