I currently have a Sapphire 7900xtx Nitro+ and am considering an ASRock 9070 XT Taichi as a side grade and slight power usage reduction so I can give my niece the old 7900xtx and 5950x combo. I have been looking over lots of reviews and it is hard to find these two cards directly compared for some reason even though they APPEAR to occupy exactly the same spot on performance charts. What I am wanting to know is if anyone can confirm or deny that I am basically doing a side grade and wont notice any real performance difference except in raytracing efficiency?

Side grade at best. No real reason for that upgrade if you want additional performance. You gain some efficiency, that’s about it.

Like I said in the OP, not looking for an upgrade. Want to make sure they are effectively the same performance as everyone seems to compare the 9070xt to the 7900xt where it beats it by roughly the same amount the 7900xtx did but the fact I am talking about the top overclocked cards of each model makes it harder to find information directly comparing either.

Stock for stock, the 7900XTX is slightly faster. But, I think overclocked vs overclocked, it might even out. For any raytracing, the 9070 XT will definitely be better. However, you also have 24GB VRAM vs 16GB to consider.

I would add to Daniels assessment that FP8 instructions significantly reduce frame time for high resolution and high refresh rate VR titles as well should you have an inclination to try VR.

Just do it and make your niece happy. It's a side grade with better ray tracing and worse raster, but not so much that it'll annoy you. And if it does, RDNA 5 will probably come out in 2027.

Most performance tests I've seen have shown the 2 to be very similar in performance, like a handful of fps difference, There are some cases where one or the other will have a bit more of an advantage, but nothing major.
The Taichi seems like a pretty nice card and it boosts to 3.1ghz...go for it! I got an Aorus Elite 9070xt and it's one of the coolest cards I've ever owned, up there with my 290x Lightning and 6700xt Strix.

I really wish the Sapphire 9070xt Nitro Plus didn't used the 12vhpr connection or I would be going with that but since that cable is just a guaranteed point of failure I have to either go with the XFX Mercury or the Powercolor Hellhound.

With 9070XTs going for $550-$650, I would jump on one while you can if you need a card anytime soon for any reason. And unless your neice has a huge tower and PSU to feed it or would put that much GPU to use at all only playing Roblox and stuff, I would sell that 7900XTX while it's still worth something and buy her something like a 9060XT or B580 instead. My daughter has been happy with her B580 at least, because she rarely plays anything outside of Roblox or Minecraft with her friends nowadays.

Sorry to ruin this post but my niece plays BL4, Helldivers 2, 2077 and she is getting ready for GTA. She might not be the greatest at them but she loves them and I don't want her not experiencing them at their best.

Fair enough, though it still may be worth selling it towards another 9070/9070XT for her while they're relatively cheap and you would hardly be out any money after selling the 7900XTX. If just for better upscaling support, RT performance, and longer/better driver support.

Yeah this is the Way. If anything the 7900xtx will have better resale value now vs a few months ago since it officially has FSR 4.1 support.

If only gaming the 9070 and 9070xt are by far the best bang for buck new. But either way she won’t be bereft of performance, 7900xtx will still be viable for at least 2 more generations of hardware cycles which nowadays equates to 6-8 years.

My son runs a 6600xt. All he does is play mostly roblox on my old 1440p Samsung 32 inch VA 240hz panel.

When he does play pc vr on his quest 3 it shows how anemic his card is for VR due to vram limitation as well as processing power. I still cant justify a 9070 let alone an xt for him.

I have a 7900xtx asrock under a block.

When rdna 5 comes out ill plop one in my rig and my son is going to get a MASSIVE upgrade with the 7900xtx but ill have to custom loop his PC.
