Look how ridiculous the naming convection has been sine the 2010s.

Radeon R5, R7, and R9 200 300 400 Series

Radeon R9 Fury, R9 Fury X, and R9 Nano

Radeon VII...what?

And see the RX 5000 series would have made a little sense after the R9 400 except we got Fury and Roman numerals quick in the middle.

But they couldn't stop them selves. Again last year and just when thing were feeling good, after the RX 7900, they skip the 8000 series for some reason and change the naming convention to look more like Nvidia? not 9700, but 9070...

It shouldn't bother as much as it does, but maybes its because I just hate marketing departments in the tech industry in general.


EDIT Hate is a strong word. especially for someone who doesn't know shit about who is involved in the naming convention.

that feel above the marketing departmens paygrade.

They execute and come up with plans-strategy to market product, but I doubt they come up with generational naming like that on their own specially when it is company wide products matching sync or breaking it (they would not be that boring and bad like that or changing all the time if it was from them)

Product that would start in the 10,000 would be a bit long and do not sound well, we can imagine them doing a reset for the next generation again.

Yeah your probably right that marketing team isn't the ones who make the call. Look at me acting like I know things! Maybe they should start with Radeon RX One and see how that works out form them.

Intel CPUs did it for 5 generations recently, Comet Lake though Raptor Lake, and while those CPUs were overshadowed by Ryzen in many ways, I never felt like they were held back by their naming scheme. I definitely appreciate consistency in product branding.

true 12600k and 14900k do not sound terrible, maybe they broke that ceiling, they had a lot of historical value and success behind it with the 2500k-9700k history to want to push a new number.

Nvidia did it going from the Maxwell 9xx for the 1xxx pascal has well, so if the branding is good enough they could, not sure if the 9000 series is strong enough for it to be worth keeping it, even with the relative continuity with the 5000-6000-7000 series before.

If the new one can be said to be UDMA (instead of rdna-cdma split, regardless of what that mean in practice) and a big step up/change, could be worth starting something new they could hope to keep for a long time.
 
AMD isn't confident in their product and are always trying to seem new and distance themselves from the old products.

I really had hope that they would keep with the 5X 6X 7X naming convention. But apparently not a single company can have an 8th series. 8 is just a terrible series. Can't have it. No no no.

Seems to be a recent thing.

Going back a bit, the 8800 GTX literally brought us CUDA. The Radeon 8500 was a decent videocard in the DirectX 7-8 era, and most recently Intel had an 8000 series (8700k, etc).

which is so odd because their products are great. Sure Nvidia is alwasy a little better, but ive never been dissaointed with their cards abilities to play my games

But that's their attitude, they're a cuck of a GPU division. They refuse to be confident in their product and just follow Nvidia like a little fangirl... Which is such a departure from their CPU division where they bent over intel and thoroughly pounded them into being insecure about their naming conventions.

god its so true. the CPU division is top dog now. THey sucked me. Love my Ryzen chip.
