[Kinda Hot] AOC - 27" Q27G40XMN Mini-LED, QHD, 180hz Gaming Monitor - Black $199.99 (Best Buy)

Most likely TPV, AOC's their flagship brand. They also manufacture for Philips and Agon.
I never would have considered AOC a flagship, times have changed. AOC was the brand I got because it was the absolute cheapest back in the day. That said I saw a YT explaining how new companies will break into a market buy offering the cheapest then once establish start to make good products.

Also VA panel. I'm a stickler for IPS if I'm buying an LCD. The amount of black crush I experienced testing a few of my buds VA panels in Tarkov was infuriating...lol. You can normally nab fast IPS panels for around this price, so not a crazy good deal...Although the mini-led zoned backlight at that price is what makes it pretty decent.

There's a place for VA, and there's a place for IPS. VA is better for watching movies (deep blacks), and single-player games. IPS is better for everything else. I ended up getting this, and it's great for my daughter's PC setup, as she prefers more casual and cozy single-player and co-op games. I watched a 4K HDR content on YouTube, and it blows my older Dell 2k IPS (non mini-LED) HDR400 monitor away. Single player games with a darker atmosphere is also much better. My daughter now has a better gaming setup than I do, and I wish I had a setup like hers when growing up.

I'm waiting on a well-priced IPS mini-LED monitor for myself, though.

Yea, don't get me wrong. Not that VA is bad or anything...Richer blacks is nice, but black crush imo is just unacceptable. Also no surprise it outperforms your IPS non mini-led, that's a given =P; having those backlight zones on top of being a VA panel means even deeper blacks...lol. VA still has it's place for sure, but losing details in darker areas is just not acceptable imo, but that's for me....for others might be justified for the richer blacks.

Yea, I'm torn on displays atm. I've been waiting for the perfect oled for years, we are like what...5 generations in? Finally the current gen WOLED ticks all the boxes, RGB stripe pixel layout (Tandem oled from LG), perfect blacks (unlike QD-OLED's graying in lit environments), color reproduction near QD-OLED with the removal of the white subpixel and dual blue layers, etc. Was planning to pick one up when it's released, but then I saw the dual 5k/1440P IPS panels demoed last year >_<. Getting a 4k/1080p dual mode OLED just hurts the heart, 1080p is not good enough. I may have to wait one more generation for a LG OLED 5k/1440p dual mode, 5k for creative uses (I work in 3D) and movies, and 1440P for gaming when 5k is too much. Either that or a IPS mini-led that has a shit ton of zones...But really want to move over to OLED finally.

This monitor was absolutely awful for me, I returned it. I really need to just get a copy and pasted rant about it ready because I keep seeing threads come up for it on reddit.

My issues with it:
  1. Awful firmware bugs that are impossible to patch (there is no way to update the firmware on the monitor after you purchase it)
    1. Turning on DisplayHDR (the accurate one you want to use) will bug out SDR content when you try to turn it back off. You have to factory reset the monitor
    2. You cannot use the full local dimming setting without setting brightness to max. Have fun burning your retinas at night (which, the one time I would want local dimming is at night??? Why does it work this way???)
  2. Caused my PC to lose power randomly. This was likely due to a bad displayport connector (I used the cable the monitor shipped with)
  3. Whacky displayport Hz and color settings - on Nvidia cards you have to limit to 179 Hz to get full color. Doesn't seem to affect AMD cards. Something about the displayport spec being falsely advertised on the monitor.
  4. Crappy ergonomics and controls. For how often I'm having to factory reset the thing when I swap between HDR and SDR content the buttons and OSD are awful to use
There is a reason it gets this cheap. Think I've even seen it go for $150. I say avoid it. Look at the comments on the review on RTings - yes, the comments. RTings glossed over many things because they assumed it would be fixed. Many commented indicate a myriad of issues with this monitor. https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/aoc/q27g40xmn

That's good to know.
1a. I turned HDR on Windows, automatically turned it on for the monitor. I don't expect to turn HDR off, but that's good to know.
1b. Once HDR turned on, I couldn't control the brightness. I figure for full HRD1000, it needs to set the nits to 1000. Interesting they don't allow it to go down to HDR400 or HDR100.
2. I didn't use the Displayport cable that came with the monitor. I use a 16K one.
3. Using a RX 9070 XT to pair with the monitor, so no issues. But losing 1 Hz for NVIDIA cards isn't that big of a deal?
4. Controls don't seem that bad, but then again, for my daughter's use, it's just a set and keep.

I don't think those issues are that bad. Most IPS that aren't mini-LED around this price range don't look as good. No bad pixels, no backlight issues, nothing major. I also don't know any monitor that have good controls.

My major nitpick is the stand isn't very adjustable. I also didn't see any VESA holes on the back (maybe they're hidden), so you have to set the viewing angle with an adjustable monitor stand, or have a gaming chair that's adjustable with an adjustable foot rest.

Pretty sure it is VESA compatible, so if you have an arm mount then the bad ergo on it is irrelevant, just use your actual mount.

It is less about losing 1Hz and more about wasting time trying to diagnose issues and find these workarounds. Seriously I wasted a couple days trying to troubleshoot my new PC build just to realize it was this janky ass monitor out of everything??? Man I was livid.

The monitor has tons of quirks and jank that I don't see people mention so I go out of my way to bring it up and link to the rtings thread where the issues have persisted for over a year. Looks great on paper.

Thanks for the warning. It'd have to be free to even consider it with all these problems :yuck:.
