Final Fantasy Resonance

cool, but they should have skipped the tired "pixel art" and just drew it.

Please let them not mess this up. I'm a bit concerned about the "summoning heroes" bit, but I'd rather have that in a full-priced, content heavy game with no garbage gacha/F2P mobile nonsense if they're going to do so.

Unless it the garbage gacha system they had in Xenoblade 2. I hated that system so much.

I thought at first that it was another one of those games, too. But hopefully it's not monetized like those games.
I found it is based of the mobile game final fantasy brave exvius. If it is anything like Octopath Traveler 0 it should be fine. That was originally a mobile game.

I can understand that. I don't have quite the hate for it not actually being a real money gacha, but I take your point. The one concern I have about Resonance is that some are talking that basically this IS an actual mobile F2P gacha game that has been remixed into a single purchase title. If this is true, well.. its as step in the right direction, but it will come down to how much of the F2P gacha systems remain and what in the game's mainline mechanics were predicated on this. There have been games like the Middle Earth Age of War Definitive Edition which totally rebalanced the game after removing the lootboxes, but we'll see what happens here. If they simply throw in all the characters instead of having to draft for them yet the F2P connective tissue deep in the game design is still there, that could impact the underlying title. Lets hope that this is given a full build specifically for a single player JRPG without mobile F2P and gacha conventions.

I'm interested. I love Square's "HD 2D" look that they have developed. I enjoy the combo of retro and more modern aesthetics. The way I've put it to some people is it is SNES games not as they actually looked, but as you remember them looking when you were a teenager.

Wishlisted, will buy pending reviews that come out by then. I doubt Square Enix is the same company that produced FFVI through FFX. But maybe they can make something decent.

Their HD2D stuff has been good.
I think part of that is that their HD2D games tend to stick to the tried and true JRPG formula. Their 3D games though, they've just gone completely action oriented.

But I guess they have the Dragon Quest franchise now for the 3D graphics with the JRPG gameplay.

They proabaly tried going action route with DQ12 and came to their senses and decided to scrape it and restart. Its been almost 10 years since 11...

I think i might actually pick this one up. Octopath Travel and Triangle Strategy never appealed to me. But ives alwasy wanted to try out a HD-2D game from SE

The 2d-3d graphics combo gave me huge Breath Of Fire IV vibes, game which I loved a lot back in the day. Wishlisted.

Anytime I see a modern 2D game, I can't help but feel like its either some mobile bullshit or just lazy low budget A studio slop.
That's what scared me about Final Fantasy looking like this, because Square does have its mobile slop shop department.

But apparently according to Circana's PlayerPulse, 77% of the Final Fantasy Rebirth player base is 30 or older. 62% is 35 or older. And I think this is partly why we're seeing so many video game remakes now, especially that Square's newer games with their newer direction are just not selling. The HD-2D is popular, brings nostalgia for the older gamers, and also hasn't been ruined by slop yet.

Same. I'm not a fan of the low res art style. It just feels like a lazy cop out from making real graphics. It doesn't give me nostalgia which is I think the only real meritable attribute of it.

But I would actually like to see a 2D game that went all out with super high resolution illustrations. 2D basically died out when PlayStation and N64 came out and we never got to see what the pinnacle of 2D graphics could be. There are basically no hardware limitations to what they could do now.

it doesn't necessary need to be lazy choice at all. Pixel graphics are an art form that are having a resurgence. Also the work that the artist put into making pixel art is not easy.

its tired and old. drawn art would have looked better, its the direction 2d should have gone.

I view pixel art as a necessity of 8-bit computers. Doing it just for the sake of it on modern HW without having to deal with the limitations of 8-bit computing is just lazy nostalgia bait and I don't respect it. I find it about as pretentious as shooting a movie in black and white or 4:3 in 2026.

Pixel graphics are a million times easier than making full illustrations and 3D graphics. Yeah, there is artistry in pixel graphics.... just like there is artistry in stick figures.
