Reusing an old DVD drive.

My new case doesn't have any drive bays, so I can't install my DVD drive from my old case. I don't use this drive very much these days, but I would still like to use when necessary. Any suggestions that don't involve spending a lot of money?

leave a sata power and data cable somewhere you can easily access so you can externally connect it as needed

If you are ripping CD's, I find traditional 5.25" drives to be more consistent than cheap USB laptop drives. Outside of that, ya either have some cables that are accessible (but you have to poweroff to connect and disconnect) or just get a cheap usb DVD drive which can be plugged in as needed.

I personally rip a lot of CD's so I cherish 5.25" drives and have many, but I acknowledge I am not a normal person.

I'm right there with you.

I tried to recommend a friend buy an inexpensive 5.25" DVD drive and an external enclosure, but I got shot down because the price of the enclosure was more than the drive. So, he bought a cheap external DVD drive that rips CDs (what he wanted it for) at the speed of a snail... like literally 2-4x max... sometimes less. Meanwhile, my 5.25" enclosed drive from 10 years ago blasts through ripping at 24-30x, with perfect AccurateRip results.

What are you gonna do? 🤷‍♂️
