This War of Mine

So awesome of them to use Omega's Gyöngyhajú lány as trailer soundtrack!!!

English version is "Girl with Pearls in her Hair".

So #awesome #omg

EDIT: I just went ahead and bought this game. I don't normally believe in paying full price, but these guys did something unusual and I consider paying up a reward for that whether the game sucks or not.

I watched the videos on Steam & added it to my wishlist.

TwistedAegis, it is definitely an interesting and different approach to "war games".
I want to know the story behind that guy with the ax hacking up that other person...

Thuleman, please come back with a mini-review!
I'm curious if it it over the top propaganda style storytelling or more... hmmm... realistic?

This sentence i read sums it up pretty much and made me buy the game instantaneously:

"Einen Bettler der mich um etwas zu Essen gebeten hat, ermordet. Könnte ja was zu Essen bei sich haben. Er hat kein Essen dabei. Fühle mich wie ein mieses Dreckschwein 11/10."

"Killed a beggar who asked me for food today. Thought he might have some food himself. He didn't have any. Feel like a dirty swine now. 11/10".

It's definitely not a fast paced game. For a "platformer" the visuals are stunning, the UI is well thought out and the designers thought about providing hints via thought bubbles early on to nudge the player toward what needs to be done without having to use a tutorial.

I am not far enough into it to write something about it with more depth, but if one doesn't require fast paced gameplay then this is worth checking out. Youtube will likely be filled with gameplays over the weekend which will give people a good idea of what's what.

I paid $20 on Steam and if I had to do it over I'd buy it again.

I am interested in the game but sadly the Linux version is broken from what I hear. It's pretty far down my wishlist anyway since there is no demo.

Alright, a couple hints/pointers:

It's probably not worth it to take on extra refugees, food is very very scarce and taking on another team member means you have to feed him/her.

Did I mention that food is very very scarce? Only give your people one meal if they are starving (do not need them if they are only hungry or very hungry). Survival likely depends on bartering for food, but I haven't figured out yet what the best barter item is.

Even once your shelter is completely boarded up you will still get raided. Not sure if that gets any better once you have weapons and post a guard, but as of now I am not convinced that the materials spent on boarding the place up are worth it vs. building something to barter away for food.

You will definitely need to be able to make lockpicks, and a saw. You will likely have better food security if you manage to create rat traps (haven't done that yet).

I think that there are some balance issues with the shelter being raided.

EDIT: After a couple more hours into it I figured out that you are much much better off to barter for wood with the guy who comes to your shelter. Looting wood is a major pain because you can only take two pieces per inventory slot. However, wood is really cheap to barter for and so you can get a ton of it without having to carry it out of some place and essentially wasting inventory slots which are much better to use for non-wood stuff. Bartering for water filters and stove fuel is also a good idea because they are cheap from the dude and you don't have to spend your materials to make the stuff. Food is very expensive to barter, built a rat trap, it creates one raw food thing every day-ish. Not sure if that's a good idea moving forward, will try vegetable garden next.

Ok, going to the Hospital and even opening the private property stashes will get you killed by a guy with an rifle, even if you don't take any of the loot.

Read the negative reviews on Steam.

On GOG it is holding an average rating of 4.5/5. Different strokes for different folks.

Nevermind, I jumped the gun. I see what you were trying to say now. I assumed the majority of reviews there were negative.

I like this game. Was a lot of fun for the 20$. I wish the game to be easier. Anyone else having hard time to find the damm food?

People are saying that: the game was designed for a tablet; the controls are broken, especially in combat; stealth is batshit random. Some people are saying that it's an unfinished, early access game.

Controls work fine with a mouse.

I dont have a problem with stealth

Seems finished to me.

Alot of people are just pure idiots, keep that it mind. Anytime you need a reminder just visit https://answers.yahoo.com/

Controls work fine, it's just a matter of getting used to clicking in the right place. The combat is more of a trial/error to learn since the game does not let you save, You could spend x amount of hours trying to get back to where you were if you messed up big time.

I remember one game Marko got fatally wounded, the next day he killed himself while I was scavenging. I used Pavle to go back to where Marko got wounded to avenge him out of principle, and he got killed because I got careless. The next day katia left and I was left with Bruno so my game fell apart so it was a learning experience.

Here are some tips that may or may not fit your play style

If your game start in the winter restart it till you get one that's in warm weather.

The game will some what have some premade groups between 3-4 characters, I always had the best of luck with Marko, Pavle, Bruno group to start because Marko has more capacity to carry things, 15, if he needs a break I use pavle which is 12 and he can run fast, and Bruno is the cook and reduces cost to cook. http://this-war-of-mine.wikia.com/wiki/Playable_Characters is a list of all possible combinations at bottom

May not be the best deal but whenever the travelling trader visits try to trade any surplus mats from him since they take up so much space and may save you a few additional days of scavenging. If I have 4-8 herbal meds, raw food, alcohol, medicine, bandages (I try to have at least 2 bandages thou). Also try to buy water filter and fuel from him, barter until he says the deal is a no go, then remove an item so he accepts deal and try to experiment adding 1 water.

You can leave 1 item on scavenging spot nearest exit and then collect things from other spots and put them there to save yourself time when you go back, specially if you have an odd number of items, and later on you figure out there was 1 single item further ahead wasting 1 spot carrying things back. Example you found 5 water, further ahead deeper you find 3 more, it will take you one extra trip if you don't combine them since water will stack up to 10 units.

Figure out how you want to build your place and what you want to build first. I usually do Metal workshop, crowbar and shovel on first day. Next day if i have enough 1 bed and a knife, and the rest is stove, radio, 2nd bed, Upgrade workshop, rain water collector, in between things board up and reinforced door, and 2 mouse traps, if you find guitar parts make it asap, Heater when it starts getting cold.

On first night you never get raided so you can leave 2 people sleeping on bed.

Once you have the house boarded up and reinforced door you can leave the other ppl sleeping in the house because if I understood correctly the reinforced door has a trap/alarm mechanism so it can wake ppl up if you get raided. Combine that with having weapons in the house like multiple rifles, shotguns and ammo and you will have no more problem with raids.

Knife is really handy, you can use it on hiding spot, make noise or wait for enemy to walk by and then switch to weapon and wait for back stab icon to 1 move kill (orange icon with knife). Warehouse is a good place with a hiding spot to get your first free gun from a bandit.

learn to cover, When you switch to weapon you will see an icon with a wall facing a way, you can use that to take cover to diminish chance of getting hit.

If you are still trying to learn how to properly combat and you want to diminish your chance of loosing an character or starting from scratch, if you are in a fight and lost too much health and you see something like fatally wounded, press ESC to pause game, click on leave, and when you load up game it will put you back on previous day, it's a lot better than starting from scratch if you are experimenting with some of the mechanics.

if your guy Dies, the second it happens, Ctrl+Alt+Del key, on the process for this war of mine and kill it asap. This will prevent the game from saving and will allow you to load in your house at a previous night before loosing your character.

so once I have 3 beds, I try to have the scavenger and the person who was guarding at night sleep in a bed during the day, and have the other 2 do things unless one is sick or wounded.

Helping out neighbors when they ask for help will usually yield items and boost the mood of your characters, I usually have the cook make a few meals and then send him away to help.

On cold days you might need to have the heater fully upgraded with 6 logs in there to keep the place warm. Characters will get sick if you don't keep them properly warmed up. I don't let my guys go past very hungry since it reduces the speed that they can heal and rest.

Best of luck and hope someone finds some of these tips useful.
