I have an HP 8740W with a mobile ATI 7820 which I want to upgrade to Windows 10. There doesn't seem to be any official driver for Windows 10, and some have suggested using the driver for 8.1. If I use the 8.1 driver, will I have any problems, and will Windows Update overwrite the driver?

Also, when I upgrad to 10, will my display work properly before installing the 8.1 driver? I'll be doing a fresh install, but right now my machine is running Windows 7.

Thanks.

You will be fine. I've used cards that are much older, such as a Radeon 4850, in Windows 10 without issue. I'd recommend just using the built-in Windows 10 driver. Only "problem" with the built-in driver is that it does not have the catalyst control center control panel. If you need that functionality, you can install the latest Windows 7 or 8.1 driver and it should work fine.

Thanks for your response. How much functionality do I give up by not having the Catalyst Control Center?

Also, would you do a fresh install or an upgrade to Windows 10 from 7?

I would upgrade. Then install the 8.1 driver if required.

Not installing the new AMD control center will make little difference, as long as you have the driver. I have many systems with the AMD software installed.
