how can i improve my audio quality on the PC, ive tried various headsets, and im currently on the astro a40 tr + mixamp, and still cant tell where enemy foot steps/gunshots are coming from. Being that ive tried 4 different headsets, i think the problem could be with motherboard audio or windows 10 audio settings. Can someone help me out with this? I get better audio from my PS4 than my PC. Im running win 10, asus Z170-AR with realtek HD. Thanks!

This isn't an "audio quality" issue, at least not to me. This is an output device issue, not the PC (unless your games or Windows are completely misconfigured).
If you want true surround audio, you need a surround source (ie: your game), output to a true surround device, such as AVR (Audio Video Receiver) and surround speakers.
Having said that, for PC gaming, you are stuck using "surround" headphones, which even the most expensive ones seem to get mediocre ratings. Or a quality stereo headset with a good sound stage. There are numerous people which support each type.

Get a home theater AV receiver + 6-8 speakers, connect the HDMI output from your PC GPU to the AV receiver... surround sound. People like to believe they're getting good directional audio from headphones, but they've never used a proper surround sound speaker setup. With speakers, your brain doesn't have to be convinced of anything via virtual surround because a speaker at a real position in your room is outputting footstep sounds from a real position relative to your head and eyes. Do you use a monochrome monitor with colored gel overlays to simulate a color output? Highly unlikely these days! Then why should you settle with virtual surround? Well, if you live somewhere that noise could be an issue, that's why.
