Debating between SSDs for a laptop

Looking to upgrade my laptop to 1 TB NVMe. I cannot decide whether the 970 EVO or the new WD Black (3D) would be better options. Temperature and power consumption would be slightly more important than performance to me - those do not seem to be assessed in reviews as often as other factors.

The ability to use edrive (which the 970 Evo should support) is also appealing. I can get the WD for about $80 less...

Does anyone have experience using these in am ultrabook?

Honestly, if it's the only hard drive in the machine, I would save the money and get a higher capacity SATA m.2 drive. When I went NVMe on my desktop, I saw no practical differences in performance over the previous SATA SSD I was using. Boot times, game loading times, app loading times, general usage all subjectively felt no different. The only time I notice any difference is when I run disk benchmarking software or copy files from one NVMe to another.

If you feel you must go NVMe, my personal choice would be the Evo. My first NVMe drive was the 950Pro, and hit has worked great for a few years and is still going strong. I am currently using a pair of 970 Evo's and they have been good so far. I'm not so sure about WD. I purchased two 256GB WD NVMe drives to do SSD caching on my Synology NAS and one of them failed on me after 4 months. I know that's anecdotal, but Samsung has generally been considered the top dog for SSDs for a while.
