OCing 1700 with Wraith Spire

First, apologies in advance if this has been covered elsewhere, I've spent a good amount of time looking around (on [H] and elsewhere) and haven't found much info. I'm trying to figure out if my Wraith Spire is spinning up properly as temps increase.

My system:
1700 with Wraith Spire
ASRock AB350 Pro 4
EVGA SuperSC 2x8GB 3200
GTX 780 (being replaced by a 1070Ti tomorrow)
Corsair 750 W PSU (going on 7 years old, but never pushed hard and has never given me any issues)
Corsair Carbide case with decent ventilation

My 1700 has been running stock since I got it in July 2017. My goal now is to get a reasonable OC to make sure I don’t bottleneck my 1070 Ti (I’m at 1440p). Right now it looks like the best I can do is 3.6 Ghz at 1.24 V (done in BIOS as I can’t get my RAM to do any better than 2133 using Ryzen Master). My temps are hitting 78*C in Prime95, but it seems like my Wraith Spire isn’t really spinning up close to its max as it’s nearly dead silent even when temps go in to the upper 70s.

The first thing I did was set up a fan curve in BIOS. It’s set to hit 100% at 75*C. However, I can hear no difference as it goes from idling in the upper 30s up to the upper 70s under load. Speccy shows the RPMs as staying in the upper 1100s at all times.

I then downloaded ASRock’s A-Tuning program, changed the BIOS fan settings from my custom curve back to Standard, and set up a curve in A-Tuning. I still can’t perceive any increase in fan speed when stress testing and seeing temps get in to the upper 70s. Speccy shows the fan speed stuck at 36,494 RPMs at all times when I use A-Tuning.

double check that its in pwm mode in the bios. maybe try another header.
 
I've never tried OCing DDR4 via Ryzen Master, but I'd argue you should be able to get close to your 3200mhz by manually seting the 4 main CAS latencies in the bios along with setting what frequency you are targeting.

Just familiarize yourself with how you clear the CMOS on your particular board as RAM OCs often require CMOS clearing when they don't post/work properly.

If you need any help in that regard, I'm sure some of us can help give you an idea of what values should work. In general start with loose (higher) timings and later tighten (lower) them to find what is stable for you.
 
ok they are all supposed to be PWM. try It on another header, just swap it with another fan, set it to max. also check what power plan you are on.
 
Neapolitan6th - I'm not trying to OC the RAM, it's rated at 3200. But I'm happy enough with it running at 3000 for now. It's rated at 1.35 V and I bumped it to 1.36 in BIOS and VDDCR SOC to 1.1 in Ryzen Master and it won't last more than a few minutes at 3200, but that's a fight for another day. I may come back to the RAM in the future but for now I'm OK with leaving it at 3000.

pendragon1 - I switched the CPU fan over to one of the chassis fan headers and now it's maxing at ~2150 RPMs. Temps are still reaching the upper 70s so I guess this is just about as good as I'm going to be able to do with this chip and a Wraith Spire. Not sure what you mean by "power plan" but I set up a fan curve so that it ramps up after 55*C and maxes at 75*C.

Oh I misunderstood. I thought you were saying you were running at 2133mhz. You are all good at 3000 (y)
 
Check the temperature that the fan curve is tied to; is it changing? Dunno about that mobo, but some Asrock boards have a broken CPU thermistor sensor, and the sensor reading never changes no matter how hot the CPU gets. Tie the fan to Tctrl rather than "cpu temp" or whatever it's called in the BIOS and see if that makes a difference.

windows power plan and you need to ramp up the fan sooner. give you ram more voltage up it to 1.4v
 
Pitingres - yes, the fan speed does change as temps increase, but I expected it to get higher (looks like other people see RPMs close to 3,000).

Pendragon - I see now, it was on balanced but I changed to high performance. Do I need to change the minimum or maximum processor states? Both are at 100% now. Will increase my fan speeds sooner and try to bump the RAM voltage further (probably not today though, short on time).

you can set that however you want. I usually lower the min to 75% so the cpu isn't always at max when idle.
 
I know what your biggest issue is. When the bios is set to default, check on the drop down for what the cpu fan is checking to set speeds. Change that to tctl and then the fan will ramp up properly. It's a somewhat known issue. Well, not widely known or talked about. It's just an Asrock quirk and applies to all Ryzen boards from what I have read:

I had this same issue with a B450 Pro4 so I have been in your shoes. Once I changed it to tctl then all was good.

You don't need to really change much in the bios to get a good performance bump. After setting to defaults, I would make the tctl change, set XMP, or whatever you need for your RAM speed, and change the multiplier to 36. No need for a manual voltage change, overclocking software, or anything like that.

Make sure to have the latest chipset drivers installed and use the Ryzen Balanced power plan since you have 1st gen Ryzen. That's it.
