Chevrolet Develops an App to Combat Distracted Driving

Chevrolet has developed the "Call Me Out" app to combat distracted driving. If a driver picks up their phone while the phone's GPS detects that the car is moving, then you lose points in the companion app. It also repeatedly plays prerecorded messages from friends and family reminding the driver to pay attention to the road and put the phone down. The app also works with non-GM vehicles.

"With Call Me Out, we are extending our commitment beyond the technologies integrated into GM and Chevy vehicles and are making the app available for Android phone users who drive other vehicle makes and models," Batey said.

I want to say this a great idea. I really want to.

But this 'app' solution is just another distraction to the distraction problem. The best technical solution, other than the shocking one above, is in next gen EVs - which can only be driven while sucking all the power from your smartphone - a dead phone can keep you alive. Sure, the 2 block range for the EV might be a hard sell, but the emergency phone charger powered by the power of your pout could make up for it.
;-)

I get they are trying, but this won't work. It's similar with the problem with DUI in the US. Everyone knows its a bad thing and dangerous. Yet, how many people still do it?

I worked with a startup company several years ago that had a decent idea (and is patent pending). However, his idea will require hardware and OS level support. It also made certain assumptions how a person uses the phone.
I challenged a few of his assumptions and he had no answers. Not too mention, good luck working with the manufacturers. The guy didn't have much of a budget and wanted to do profit sharing. Sigh. Everyone thinks profit sharing is a generous offer except developers. If my product succeeds, you will make a lot of money! (And if it doesn't?)

And the Tesla app just takes the wheel if it detects you doing the same thing.

Presumably you have to start the app in order for the app to do any good, and if you are starting the app every time you drive (do you really want it running all the time?) chances are you already are very good about not texting while driving.

Toyota have that and one or two insurance companies over here.
You are supposed to get rewards for safe driving

I'm sorry to say but FCC laws make this an unsolvable problem until cars drive themselves. Until manufacturers are allowed to implement local jamming while the car is in motion if a phone isn't synced up to bluetooth, this won't change. I'm pretty sure that self driving cars will take over before this is resolved and I don't see self driving taking over for at minimum another 50 years.

This is a stupid PR move. So instead of putting voice commands built into the car, so you can do the things you wanna do without looking at your phone, instead they created this shitty app which nobody is going to download to "Call Out" anyone they see driving while holding a phone. GM, cause this is GM not fucking Chevrolet, you guys need to put GPS into cars that isn't worse than Google Maps so people don't hold their phones while driving. Fucking idiots.

They should hold a distracted driving experiment here.

Great. Now if we could get this app to automatically download on every make and model of phone with it being hard coded into the O/S after install and unable to be removed, then we might make some actual progress in combating retards on the road.

Otherwise, it's effect will be limited to those who realize they have a problem (more power to those who are trying to solve it).

Isn't that what Android Auto and Apple Carplay are for?

so.. an app on a device you are having issues with??

thats like using coke.. to over come your coke problem

This. Anybody stupid enough to be using their phone while they drive is not going to even download this app, because they don't think they need it!

Give me a discount on my insurance for using it and I'll use it all the time. I put my phone in the console and don't touch it when driving. But, I'm a sucker for a discount or anything to save money (more for H&B). It'd be a good incentive for many.

That's my thought--- what's the incentive for the obsessive texter?

i hold the phone above the steering wheel.

it's common sense.

But it's still not easy because you can only look at your phone <1 second per glance, or you lose focus of the road.

There's a phone holder you can stick into the air vent, it's pretty convenient and you get to drive with both hands
