My daughter started AP Calculus yesterday and needs a graphing calculator. Thought I would see if a fellow member needs to get rid of one. Or recommends something?

Edit: Teacher recommended a Ti-84CE

Thanks.

Does she need to have a specific make or model? I know in some classes they do.

Perhaps posting some examples of models that would meet your daughter's needs would be helpful.

I recall using TI 83+ back in the day. check craigs you might be able to find cheap ones locally there..

HP48G. I still have mine somewhere from my calc back in the day.

Not a serious recommendation, but it was an awesome piece of hardware way back when. I think most all classes these days assume you have a Ti 8x, which is also pretty old but a standard. I think it's been more or less superceded by the TI Nspire series.

Pretty much - whatever calculator her teacher says she should have - get that one. Even if it's not the best one, it's the one they are going to use to show examples in the class and that makes a big difference.

To be honest. I've never needed a graphing calculator. I assumed they were all the same. I didn't realize there were different Texas Instrument versions that did different things :/

I'll see what she says.

ti 81 was basic ti83 had some more memory i recall and the 89 was like the bread and butter.

If she's going to be doing more calc, get the Ti-89 titanium. It'll differentiate equations and do other graphing functions the others won't. Mine lasted for about 9 years before it died. If she's going into more stats, get the 83 or 84 line as most classes will be based on the performing actions on the calculator rather than actually teaching you the content.

Outside of actually doing graphing, a good scientific calculator can last a long time. That said, a graphing calculator is going to last a long time if it doesn't take unexpected baths in coffee.

See what limitations there are. if you're allowed a computer algebra system. I'd recommend the TI NSPIRE-CAS over the 84+, In general, color doesn't matter one bit, the computer algebra system on the CAS is infinitely more useful, and they go for around the same price. I suppose the only caveat with that is I would assume most textbooks contain instructions for the 84+ series.

if you're willing to shop, you might consult / call local college or university surpluses to see if they have any graphing calculators available for cheap.

Teacher recommended a Ti84 CE. I'll call our local community college to see if they have any surplus for sale

I wish someone didnt steal my old Ti83+ calculator from back in the day. I think I played more games on it than actually using it for work assignments.

I have a ti86 sitting in a drawer from when I was in college 15 years ago. Also should have a USB transfer cable for programs. No idea if it works on current windows....I used it on 98 and later xp back then so call it a bonus.

If you're interested I'll dig it out and see if it works. Keep in mind I'm in Canada so I'd need a zip code to estimate shipping.

Send me a PM if you want it.
