Razer Phone

Well.. I'm waiting to get mine replaced. The top speaker blew and I had to send it back. They are sending me a new one. Though they are taking quite a while.

How goes the replacement process, Warrior? Need an update! Speaking of updates, what do you think about the software/firmware updates to today?

And Rumor Update:
"Project Linda" and Razer Phone 2 will likely be announced at IFA in August. So the lapdock and next phone will likely come a little bit early in September/October rather than November ( its original launch). Rumors also suggest that the current Razer Phone might not be compatible due to some hardware deficiencies or that they just aren't going to make a different seamless lapdock for different device dimensions. Other rumors so far seem more like fan expectations/hopes than anything, so I'm not repeating them.

You'll have to inform me about the update/firmware that happened. I'm unaware, and my phone currently says it's up to date.

The replacement phone process was simple, straight forward, and.. well... normal, but a little on the slow side FOR ME. It's the normal routine: Contact them, they say "Aw man, lets try a bunch of stuff, (ect...)...Now factory reset, for your obvious hardware issue"..., then you ship your phone, then they get it right away, and send you another one. Now, I MIGHT be a one-off for the shipping delays, because there was some confusion about my Razer account, or some bullshit, but it once it was worked out, I received it within the week.

Now, the guy in the chat said that Razer is great because the replacement phones will be brand new phones, not refurbished. The phone came in the clear plastic wrap, and seemed pretty damn new. The setup process was the same as BNIB. So, that was kind of nice.

All in all, I give them a 'B+' on the replacement process. It was relatively easy to deal with support, I was done with them in pretty much the time it took to factory reset the phone. The shipping delays was my only grip, so I will go down a letter grade, but then I'll give them a plus for being brand new, and getting it out ASAP after we sorted our account issues. Which again, this could of all been a one-off from my experience. If there was no shipping delays I would easily give it an 'A' for the process. And, an 'A+' would go for a cross-shipment/they ship first. If they had that option in the beginning (with no delays) this would have been the best experience.

Feel free to ask me any questions.

I still love this phone. A lot. :D

How much are these things again? Are you guys happy with them ? Screen contrast ratio, performance and everything.

Has anyone tried using one of these phones in a VR headset? Curious how the low latency screen would do.

I did take a serious look at this phone but, I ended up with an Essential phone instead. I do not game on my phone and the Essential phone was more comfortable in my hand.

If any of you owners are still out there, how's the Razer Phone holding up?

Word is that it already has Oreo 8.1 with Treble, putting it ahead of damn near every other smartphone manufacturer not named Google, and of course, the bootloader's unlockable. Bring on the Generic System Images!

Everybody won't shut up about the camera quality, but hey, that's what modded Google Camera is for. Or Camera FV-5 or Open Camera for those who need manual controls, as long as the camera2 API implementation is what it should be by now.

My Razer Phone is still awesome. And yup, it has 8.1 Oreo and I'm still running on the stock ROM. It works great. The screen is terrible outside and the camera is shit in low light, but I don't care. It's stable as all hell and fast as shit. And when you are inside the screen's 120Hz is great. Not to mention the speakers and the battery life is amazing too. It has pretty much what I want in a phone. I don;t care to take too many pictures with my phone really, and If I need to I have adapted to just turn the lights on or orient the picture for more light.

It's still a phone I highly recommend if you're not the phone camera type like myself.

With my current experience with Razer and it's phone, I would definitely be intrigued for what they bring next.

Good to hear, then! If Razer can keep up the support in the long term, I think they can carve out a spot for themselves amongst Android enthusiasts.

It seems like the Razer Phone's kinda underrated, perhaps because of its allegedly underwhelming camera performance. To me, it still looks like a generally superior alternative to a Pixel 2 (XL) for anyone who wants that stock Android experience, yet hardly anyone's talking about it.

while it's a good first try the other players in that space for stock Android that have better phones. But more options don't hurt

I'd actually like to hear what you think are better options in the "stock Android" space, since out of all the ones I know:

-Google skins up their Pixel devices a bit (Razer and Essential are more stock Android at this point), doesn't have microSD to push their cloud storage services more, and the price on the Pixel 2 XL combined with abysmal screen quality control make it overhyped and overpriced IMHO.
-HMD Global/Nokia devices aren't sold in the US to my knowledge, and have locked bootloaders.
-OnePlus has great XDA-devs support and a fair price, but you'd better slap on a custom ROM ASAP. Also, no microSD.
-Essential's already crashed and burned, and their PH-1 has a very ugly camera notch. Uglier than the iPhone X, even. Too deep. Also, no microSD.
-Motorola... have they even been relevant since Lenovo bought them?
-Sony may as well not exist in the US.
-Asus hasn't released the ROG Phone yet, and the ZenFone line is historically way too bloated to be sensibly considered stock.

I'm just trying to broaden my knowledge a bit here, outside of my own immediate familiarity with Samsung and the occasional LG, neither of which are remotely stock outside of custom ROMs.

With 128GB to 256GB of space available on phones these days is lack of an SD slot really that big of an issue? I'm not shooting 4k video of myself and everything I eat, but I know that I'll likely never need more than the 128GB my 1+6 has and if I did I can always free up the space by copying it to my computer

Music libraries eat up a lot of space when they're in FLAC, for starters. That's before I get into shooting lots of video...

Also, nothing beats the convenience of moving practically all of your media to a new phone just by popping the SD card out of the old one and moving it into the new one, or being able to recover your media from a dead phone because the SD card didn't fail with it. Oh, and unlike USB OTG approaches to reading SD cards, it obviously doesn't tie up your one and only USB port on the phone to have an internal slot. (When are we going to start seeing phones with two USB-C ports, anyway? That'd make the dongle situation a lot more bearable.)

Don't get me wrong, lots of internal storage is nice for your apps and a hell of a lot faster than microSD until the latter gets upgraded to SD Express across the board, but having only internal storage is like having a PC with only a 128 GB SSD and no means to add an 8 TB HDD. It's just not enough space by itself.

I figure that if they're gonna bother with a SIM card tray anyway, might as well have microSD or any faster successors as well. It's an option that's there in case you need it but not really mandatory to use, and I'm all for having more options instead of getting those options taken away, like we've seen with removable batteries and are now seeing with headphone jacks (something the Razer Phone is itself guilty of, quite irksomely, but at least Razer claims to put a decent DAC/amp in their dongle to the point that owners of other USB-C-equipped phones that aren't LG V-series are buying said dongles for better sound quality).

I've been using smartphones since the Moto Q (around 2006) and I've had 2 phones completely die on me. I acknowledge that it does happen I think it's more the exception. I've had a number of SD card failures though...
While I agree that having more options is better, I think people make way too big of a deal over not having a SD slot. I don't understand what your issue is with using the 1 usb slot to transfer data from phone to your computer? Also, you made a post above commenting that w/1+ phones you better slap a custom rom on it asap? what are you talking about? I'm on my 3rd 1+ phone and other than my nexus phones, they are the first manufacturer where I had no desire to "mod" the phone at all. IMO bang for the buck, you can't beat them.

If you use unencrypted microSD cards, I hope you don't save any photos or videos on it.

Sure, you can use the USB port to transfer to a PC, or even do it over LAN, but having more options never hurt. Besides, having microSD storage reduces how frequently I'd have to do that to free up space.

The bit about slapping custom ROMs on OnePlus phones ASAP stems from an issue where they accidentally left a root backdoor in, IIRC. It was all over XDA-developers and other sites.

Didn't do OxygenOS any favors there in terms of being regarded as secure, but I consider strong custom ROM support a major selling point anyway, one that adds to the value proposition that's hard to beat. I figure everyone who even knows what OnePlus is will just toss on a custom ROM from day one.

That goes for any computer storage medium, really. If it's that sensitive, it probably doesn't even belong on a phone anyway.

Of course, encrypted storage usually takes away the portability between devices, so the end user will have to make the tradeoff between convenience and security.

Quite interesting phone, thinking of picking it up after Asus rog or Huawei gaming phone is released for a lower price.
