Last week on Pi Day marked the release of the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ with a slightly higher clocked Cortex-A53 processors, dual-band 802.11ac WiFi, faster Ethernet, and other minor enhancements over its predecessor. I've been spending the past few days putting the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ through its paces the past few days with an array of benchmarks while comparing the performance to other ARM SBCs as well as a few lower-end Intel x86 systems too. Here is all you need to know about the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ performance.

So, does it overclock higher?

Maybe, but I'd think only by a bit. The updated CPU is really the same as that in the 3B, only with some optimizations to power delivery and thermal management. Also, the on-board power management circuitry is improved. This basically allows the 3B+ to run stable at the same speed the 3B might overclock to on a good day. The RPi blog has all the details on the new board.

The real reasons to get the 3B+ over the 3B are the vastly improved networking and those limited cases where PoE would be useful.

Here at [H]ardOCP, we only care about one thing: how far can we push the little bastard.

Have they updated the shitty USB controller?

I wonder if the small bump in speed would be worth my time to upgrade my RetroPie system with it. I have a RPi2 as the controller for my Ubiquity access points, and a RPi1 as a remote backup appliance for my home NAS.

Just picked up two of these, the networking upgrade is going to be awesome. Easy change to 5Ghz from 2.4Ghz and integrated. Moving away from legacy 2.4, too crowded. Getting another Pi NoIR camera with and a Freenove kit to experiment with.

No. It still can't play N64 or other consoles from that generation too well. The real reason to get the new one is due to the things BlueLineSwinger mentioned above.

If you want a true upgrade for Retropie, then Odroid XU-4 is where it's at until the Pi4 comes out.

The Pi3B+ is getting on average 1.55-1.6ghz. That really isn't due to limits on cooling so much as the limits of the SOC, power circuitry, etc. I can get my older Pi3's up to 1.45ghz and keep them at 55 celsius. Their thermal throttling begins at 80c. If I go any faster on them, they just crash no matter what you adjust.

I know what I am doing later this day. I have a spare Pi to play with.

Kicking around the idea of doing an oil submerged over lock in a freezer.
