Cougar QBX Madman Mod

Hey guys, wanted to share my inspired, or mod of madness, experience with the QBX.

Spoilers are links to the images via Imgur. I think the PSU has a screw mounting it from the top between the top plastic cover and the metal sheet that goes over the top, but I can't recall right now and it's late.

I initially got the case to create a smaller build for my wife to take to work. In the end, it didn't work out the way we expected as she found a better job and the case was kind of just sitting there uselessly. So I then decided to transfer my daughter's build into the case and see how it would work out.

First thing I saw upon opening the case was how much wasted space there is at the top, near the front with the PSU mount. It's freaking huge and takes up like 2 more inches than it should:

It was held in by rivets and I didn't have a drill to drill them out, so I used my hammer and flat head to knock out six rivets holding the bracket in.

To mount the PSU, I used one of the fan screws and punched into the existing ventilation holes to enlarge it.

Then to get the top sliding cover on, I made a cut out around the PSU extension and shaved down the comically large extension cable's top:

I don't have a metal file to remove the sharp edges, so I just avoided putting my fingers near the cut out. Didn't need to mess around with it much once it was mounted and plugged in.

I also didn't want to remove the Thermalright True Spirit120 BW and its NB e-Loop fan and buy another cooler, so I just left the damn thing on. Even with the drive cage -- it works perfectly fine. I don't have any pics of that setup because I got rid the 3.25in HDD and went with a 2.5in SSD and HDD soon after.

You can see the drive setup above and a side shot shows no bulge even though the heatsink is 145mm tall and the spec sheet of the QBX says it supports CPU heatsinks up to 105mm in height.

I'll update the post with the pics posted properly. Couldn't figure out why the links kept coming up as broken.

its imgur fucking things up. just drag/drop images to the message window.

If you're going to use Imgur why not at least make an album, this is hard to make any sense of.
