Quick Facts about Meltdown and Spectre

Optimism is good, but I think a fix is going to require a performance hit due to the nature of the problem.

.
Fine wine drivers that will be optimised, kind of expecting much from Microsoft. They don't give a crap about Intel, if they can hard implement a fix that is generic and blanket they will. This will likely be the policy by all.

Ucode may help mitigate some effects but it can't change how the uarch works

I have 3 computers at home all intel skylake kabylake and coffeelake , one is for fun and testing is there anyway to stop the windows patch KB4056892 on that one. I've tried all the normal tricks so far but windows forces the update. Once I'm done I'm leave it on 24/7 and see if it ever gets hacked and see how dangerous this bug really is. I have a image file that i can restore in like 5 minutes to it so it would be a fun experiment

Why not do your honeypot with a VM at least then.. oh wait.., no that won't work with this one. Geeze even fun time honeypot VM's are back doors into your host system. Sigh...

So have you noticed a difference since Microsoft and others have been trying to patch for spectra and meltdown. I don't know if it is the patches or something else, but my system which has ran flawlessly since building it 2 years ago is just slow now. Programs take longer to open. Programs are stalling and freezing now and even clicking the mouse is frustrating. Nothing happens, then it speeds through the action, but because my mouse is no longer where I clicked it the action cancels out. I have ran Malware Bytes and Webroot. Both say everything is fine. I am about to try the refresh Windows option or a new install.

Anyone else having problems?

I had an interview with a company yesterday that has a lot of multi-terabyte databases, and I asked if they've noticed any impact from the patching. They said they've noticed none whatsoever except when IT bring the systems down to apply the patches.

You were clearly talking to the wrong people. 1. Did IT even fully patch yet? 2. Has IT taken steps to increase performance of their DB servers in part of the patching?

While our end to end testing with the last iteration of "patched" or "broched" bios's we did see a per core impact on performance. But overall performance wasn't impacted at all because our DB servers are overbuilt purposefully.

Well it wasn't windows patches slowing my system down - my data drive has quit working. I tried simple things like checking the sata and power cables. At times Windows sees the drive and i can access the info slowly. During one of these times I tried making a fresh backup of my data and ended up screwing up my old backup.

I will try taking it someplace to see if I can recover the data. Any suggestions before I do? Also what should i expect for the transfer, if it is possible? Any help would be appreciated.

LaAaZ... the only real expectation with a REAL data recovery place... is it will be EXPENSIVE. otherwise they use recovery software and it's a lot cheaper but you can do that yourself.

When I plug in and power up the disk sometimes nothing happens sometime the disk is visible and under disk management it says that I need to initialize the disk, but I can't. There are 2 partition types listed under the option MBP and GPT neither works. The drive spins and sounds ok. I am assuming from the info in disk management that the partition has been damaged somehow . But it is just a guess on my part..

I downloaded the free version Easeus data recovery, but it doesn't see the disk in its current state.

From what I can tell the free software didn't have the partition tools. I do mind purchasing a copy? Any recommendations? Seem to be lots of programs out there Disk Aid, Easeus, Mini Tool Disk Recovery.

I don't know which one to purchase

I tried mamy free versions of data recovery software over the weekend. The only one that kind of worked was active undelete. Bought an upgrade, but neither version could retrieve the data both versions can find and scan the drive. When the scan is complete, I can see the data then Windows freezes and kicks the drive off the system. I can hear a slight clicking sound as the drive is being scanned, so that can't be good. Don't know if it is completely frozen, but it has got to be heading in that direction. I will try some sort of boot disk next, but douybt it will make a difference.

Have you tried looking at the drives from a different machine? Or using the Linux data recovery options? UBCD does not require booting into windows.

No I haven't tried accessing the drive from another computer. Will give it a try. Will also look into UBCD.
