Looking for a short-depth 2U NAS case

I am moving my NAS from a Lian-li Q02 case to my rack cabinet for consolidation of that and some of my network hardware. As part of the move, I would like to take the opportunity to more than double capacity (10 drives to 24 drives).

Ideally, someone out there makes a Supermicro SC216-style chassis for 24x 2.5" HDDs that is shorter in depth. Mobo for this system is mitx, so no need for larger board support and the cabinet it is going into has a max usable depth of 20".

Would need to retain the hot-swappable capability to support 15mm drives that the SC216 has.

I've looked for a setup exactly like that, although I have a micro-ATX board instead of mini-ITX. Never found quite what I was looking for. You get some better options if you go with 3U, plus easier to use standard components (PSU, expansion cards). What I ended up doing was find a 3U case with several 5.25" bays and installed 4x2.5" adapters. Doesn't hold 24 drives though.

You're probably looking for a unicorn... but I'd be happy to be proven wrong. I'd like to see a case with that setup myself.
 
If I went with 3U, I'd want to do something absurd like multiple 24-drive backplanes with vertically mounted drives, lol. Really don't want to spend that much money.
 
Only because I got a good chuckle and you wanted maximum drive bays. I know it's not the short depth. I didn't know they made something like this though.-

What is your budget? Looks like the ones out there are all over the place for pricing. I think it may be difficult to locate a shallow depth 2U supporting 24 drives. Any chance to go up in U-space 3, 4u? If willing to separate, what about san?

Up for modding? Found a couple cases that may work but would need hotswap bays added.

LOL. That is awesome. Shame it is full depth.

I'd prefer to keep it to 2U to minimize rack cabinet reqs (UPS is already taking 4U, routers and switches are 1U each, have a slim space for radius, pbx, and other rpi stuff, a 1u slot for a spare workstation, and would like to leave a couple U for an ESXi development node). Don't really want more than a 15U stack in the office.

Always up for modding, was thinking I could probably snag a supermicro 24 drive chassis on ebay and just move the hot swap blocks to a shorter chassis. Would like to keep the entire chassis with hotswaps and psu under 400-500.
 
the chassis are still kinda expensive to just scavanage imo.

what'd you end up deciding?

what about getting a san and gutting/customizing it? I'm not sure how this would effect using the backplane or drive slots though. If that is still usable, may be worth it since some of the older san's are cheaper now and still support a decent amount of storage. I know my hp san supports 2tb drives and may support larger but is sas.
 
Was going to use shucked 4tb drives, so will probably just get a 216 if i can fi d one on ebay that will ship to an apo. Then disassemble and remount the hardware in a short case. Seems the most elegant solution.
 
Found a SC-216 for a couple hundred shipped. Will give the 2x E5420/16gb/mobo to a friend, but will keep the LSI 9650SE-24M8, cables, backplane, and will derivet the drive housing group with 24x hot swap bays from the chassis.

Will transplant into a 14" depth case and mount my ITX board from my current NAS.

Anyone need 18x 320gb scorpio blacks, 2x 750gb scorpio blacks, 2x 150gb velociraptors, and 2x 64gb samsung SLC ssds? I am thinking target practice :p
 
Got everything pulled apart. Now to find a 15" depth 2U case with full height pcie slots. Only one i have found so far is the istarusa e-20, but hopefully can find something cheaper!

[edit]Found a couple, but no one ships to APOs, lol. Looks like the father in law is getting drafted again

What did you end up going with? Or, what would you if there weren't APO shipping issues? I might replicate your setup.
