WCG Birthday Challenge - strategy

So... despite thinking I'd only give this until 7:30PM PST (it's now 8:35) and needing to fly out in the morning... I stupidly decided to spin up some boxes. Hopefully they'll all behave.

1x 2P Gold 5118
1x 2P E5-2620 v4
1x 2P E5-2620 v4 (@75%)
7x 2P E5-2640 v3

Systems that weren't working for some reason...
1x 4P E5-4640 something
1x 2P Gold 5118
Something else?

And that's in addition to the other... nine?... systems that are already going. Never did get that E7 box switched over to Ubuntu; so it'll have to do at 50%.

Managing these things is a real PITFA. Pretty sure I have remote desktop enabled on all of them now; and set the the network type properly in PowerShell, blah blah blah. Like I said, PITFA.

Also seems I also had two systems with the exact same computer name. Not sure if that's causing me problems with WCG or not. Do know I'm still fighting with random boxes being told they've "reached their WU limit" or some such crap when they've just enough WUs to keep the cores saturated. Did set them all to 2D + 2D, just in case my proxy shits the bed and it takes me a few days to notice. ;)

Really dislike the way WCG reports computers. Every other BOINC project under the sun tells you in great detail about what computers you have and, when you bring a new one online, you know within minutes. But, no, not WCG! So can only hope all ~20 boxes are up and running are they're supposed to be... because I'm not checking them again. :p

Meh. Whatever. 'Geek out! :)

Well enjoy your vacation time with your family. :geek:
That is still a boat load of cores.

Holy cow, the greek army is fighting ; hope you leave us some WU to process too

... enjoy your time off and away

Thanks for the support fastgeek . WCG isn't a standard BOINC server but rather a mesh of their old UD server and BOINC with some home brew to glue it all together. One of those in the future we would like to... things but never will.

Open the gate:

and still 44 pages in pending verification ...

I sent an email to Brilong to see if he was still around and to let him know we were hitting WCG. Hopefully he pops in for a visit.

That would be nice, but I don't think he is coming around. He hasn't visited the forums in a year.

We're currently in 9th place.

Skillz, again I want to thank you for your recruiting efforts. The old timers are tired of hearing me beg. It is nice to have others out there trying to convince them. You done really well for us this year.

Yes indeed, he got to me while txt on Steam. I missed the bunker opportunity but did add WCG to all CPU's and will suspend CSG until the challenge is over.

Just dropped another bunker bomb in the last one hour. I'll drop another one in the next few hours.

In case anyone has spare time over the weekend, see post here on how to get the most pphr (points per hour) by bunkering.

YMMV and I can get close to 70% in output per day including setup/staging for the best pphr before bunkering. 50% to 100% is quite reasonable depending on the effort that you put in.

Warning: only if you have time and effort to do this.....;)

I haven't had the time to use the daily bunkering method but can vouch for the fact it provides a handy boost.

My 32 thread rigs started briefly at close to an average of 90 pph but now seem to be levelling off at about 70-75 pph on OET/Linux.

We seem to be holding our own at 4th but I'm a tad concerned by TechPowerUp and the bunker drops that that TAAT's Stefan still has up his sleeve.

I'm getting about 69 pphr with OET-Linux on my best performing 2695v2. Overall our team is only averaging around 26-27 pphr, so that's a big huge difference in output efficiency.

I'll continue to bunker.

.. and sadly I screwed up one bunker lot:rage::cry::rage::cry::rage::cry:

I DESERVED it. On my 2695v2, with Windows7 installed, I ran OET under VM (linux) which I get 69 pphr.

I wanted to run OET under W7 on that same rig during the bunker period but I may have forgotten to do the max pphr thing. I can't pull up any history of this rig in WCG other than recalling running a few tasks here and there over different projects. See rig history here. WCG clears up the history of the completed tasks pretty fast. Since I didn't do the max pphr thing, I'm speculating that the OET in W7 on this rig may not have run for quite some time already, so I got a quorum of 2. I thought you only need to run your rig once (like 10 validated tasks) to avoid quorum of 2 for those projects with standard quorum of 1.

Below is some of the validated tasks where the higher credits are mine and my wingman is happy with higher credit granted.:(

Ouch, but it could have been worse. I thought you might have lost the entire bunker.

I came across a similar thing on Saturday. Two computers that hadn't crunched WCG for a month wouldn't download the full thousand bunker until some more tasks had been validated.

The delay meant I then didn't have the time to finish the full thousand before the event kick off. I should have started earlier ......

We got ChelseaOilman farm coming online this weekened when he gets back to Texas. No idea what kind of hardware he has in TX.

Ive been working on getting Patriot/Eagle to fire up some boxes, too.

Now if you can only get Grandpa to fire up those old 2P/4P boxes he used to run...

Wow, this bunkering discussion reminds me why I hate BOINC points so much - they way overthought this system lol

Whilst fixing my various misbehaving systems, and praying IT wasn't somehow monitoring my doings, I manually deleted MCM from most of said boxes. This bugged me a bit, since this trashed a couple thousand WUs, but I do get the point. Didn't log into most of the systems that were behaving (figured the less time logged in remotely the better)... but if need be I can in the next day or two.

So any highest pph projects we should be shooting for? I've got everything but the 2 quorum projects selected, and right now average around 25 pph. I am going to be lower than average as a lot of my horde is lower clocked multi-p sandys and ivys. And that 6380 4p which isn't exactly known for being fast per core lol

OET gives you the best pphr under linux. Quorum is 1 if you have run this project before. With TR (data courtesy of phoenicis), you can get 80 - 90 pphr with some effort. 25 pphr is about average for our team.

OET has been kind to me but I've not extensively tested the others out recently.

The three I can narrow it down to are OpenZika, SCC and OET although YMMV depending on the make and architecture of your CPU.

Overall, I've found SCC to provide the best scoring in Windows and OET in Linux. Skillz recently pointed out that he found that OZ provided healthy credits on his G34 4p Linux rigs.

Great, thanks. I'll narrow my project selection a little more. Since I am a mix of Linux/Windows (mostly Linux) and AMD/Intel, I can't be too picky.

Just make sure to tick the check box for accept work from other sub projects. Since we aren't the only team that watches points per sub project and OET has been talked about in the past, there is a possibility of work drying up between each refresh of work. WCG only puts so much of each sub project in at a time.

Keep an eye of other teams doing bunkering. At this moment, TeAm seems to be active and just dropped one. Maybe they are doing the same thing to maximize output.

I'm doing bunkering too:D

Do we need to be invited to join that slack team?

Not that I am aware of. You just create an account and join the channel.

So when I click on that link I'm greeted by a login, which I don't have for the hardforum slack team. It says to get an account I need an invite from the Workspace Administrator.

Create an account and tell me the username. I'm not sure if I have the permission too, but I can try to send you a invitation.

If not, ChristianVirtual will need to do that and fix the permissions so anyone can join the general talk channel.

My display name is ext64

I already have an account from another Slack team

I tried searching your name but nothing comes up. I guess I don't have permission to invite anyone to the channel. ChristianVirtual will have to.

Yeah me too. I tried to get on another slack server but my login wouldn't work and I gave up.

I got on the [H]SS discord server very easily. Its similar to slack. But I just clicked a link, made an account and was chatting with fellow [H] members.
