PrtScr capture.jpg

Hi guys, new to the forum. I built my retro PC over year ago, but didn't really do much to make the OS match the vintage exteriors aesthetic. I remember the excitement of installing Windows 95 from Win 3x as a 12 year old kid. 22 years later I'm definitely reliving it.

Sadly the old style window boarders aren't native, and come from a skinning program called window blinds. I'm using a modded version of the "true classic" theme. All of the icons are just shortcuts with the icons changed. If anyone has any interest, I'll be putting together all the media and a video walk though on how to do this in the coming weeks.

Are there any other iconic program icons from the 1994-1999 era that should be on my desktop? Let me know if you have any questions, or just want to share some memories!

Video demo/walk through is here:

Wow! I applaud your work, sir! Well done!
I'm still watching the video but am tickled by the floppy <-> SD card mod. That's super clever. :D

That is far and away the best thing I've see in this subforum. Very cool.

That's a cool damned project, congrats, and yes the SD-floppy thing is awesome. ;)

It turned out to be my favorite part of the build. It just doesn't get old

Thanks!

Crazy that I can barely tell the difference from the Vevo YouTube uploaded version, and the 22 year old included file form the Windows 95 CD-Rom. Timing is off though, they fall out of sync pretty quickly.

Nice job! Looks great. Much better than Win 10's stock Ui lol. For me Win 98 was the last best "Stock" Windows UI.

This is my current iteration Win 10. From a base skin from like a port of a port of a port Linux Ui skin or something. Kind of retro modern. I despised 10 stock, but the "metro" flat look did grow on me as i do like as little wasted space and clutter from the UI as possible, something MS didn't take advantage of at all. WindowBlinds/Skin Studio wasn't ready for prime time when i started. Haven't checked it out lately, but i did spend countless - too many really, hours in Skin Studio with XP for like a decade pixel by pixel till my eyes bled.

resource hacker, win style builder, classic shell, win aero tweaker, photoshop, and reg hacks for context menus.

I like this....Very good my friend!

Wait, you made 10 look like 95? 95 is the bigger number so obviously better, but you made it look perfect! I wouldn't mind modding my 10 that way. I bet some of my friends would love this kind of stuff.
Do the new style programs work nicely with this UI?
As for the missing icons - I guess Hover is something I really loved to click on :p

Know a bunch of people who'd LOVE this.
You currently have the vid as unlisted. So I figure I should ask before splashing it all over the Intarwebz.

There any problem with sharing this unlisted vid?

I saw an article recently for a guy who was able to get Windows 3.11 running in a VM. WinAmp is still available, I believe. I've been using it on my Android phones, too. On a side note, Ask Jeeves made me laugh.

Oh, good old W95!

And it's blue death screen! Never forget.

I added back the classic BSOD via a registry edit too!

I play it from my floppy disk at 34:30 in the video

I just didn't want my subscribers seeing a rambling unscripted video of me blabbing away. I'll release a public how to do this, but in the meantime if you want to share it, I have no problems.

I love this website

Dude you could monetizzle that shizzle!

The video I posted above? Nah really boring. Like I said, a better video needs to be made with an actual how to. Plus the guys song at 28:27 that sampled The windows95, DTS and PlayStation sounds put a Content match on that video so I couldn't. Well I'm sure he personally didn't do it it's just an automatic match but kind of ironic right seeing as how all those sounds are not owned by him.

I mean the whole process. Sadly you couldn't simply redistribute a Windows ISO with that retrofitting, but if you perhaps found a way to bundle it all into some sort of installer...
Sorry if I'm missing something.
