Droid Life has a write-up and video that demonstrates some of the issues plaguing the 6-inch POLED display in the Pixel 2 XL. Here’s hoping that Google can convince Samsung to share some of their better panels next year. For now, they are saying that the Pixel 2 XL may get more display color options in a software update.

For one, you’ll notice that as you tilt the phone to the left or right or look at it from an angle (like if it were lying on your desk to the side), you’ll see an almost-instant blue tone taking over the display. You won’t notice it for the most part with a dark background or app up, but with a light background on the display you will see it without a doubt. Another way to describe this would be that if you aren’t looking directly at the display with it also facing directly at you, you may see a weird color shift to a cooler temperature.

I have the LG V30, which uses the same panel. When I lay my phone flat on my desk at work, I do see a slight hue change. It is very slight, but it is there none the less. It does not bother me at all. If a text pops up and I just tap it to read it at the extreme off angle while I am sitting, it does not affect my ability to read it. My desk is counter height. If I am standing I do not notice the hue change. Looking directly at the phone like I am supposed to, it looks great.
As for the dark grainy complaint, I have not seen that at all. Again, I am using an V30 and not Pixel 2 xl. I just figured I would comment because I believe they use the same panels.

No headphone jack, no sale.

No sd card, no sale.

Grainy screen (see Ars review), no sale.

Overpriced, no sale.

Any one of these is enough to have me waiting on an unlocked V30. But taken together... what a huge bust the Pixel has been!

It's not just a poor viewing angle, it's also grainy, uneven, and blotchy. It's basically Samsung's OLED screens from several years back (e.g. S2, Note 3).

Just got mine....

While yes, if you turn it about 45 degrees you do get the "blue," but I think maybe this is something for folks to gripe about. Will use it for a couple of days and see.

Yeah, I have a LG G Flex 2 which was LG's previous attempt at a phone with one of their P-OLED screens prior to the V30.
It was unusable for google cardboard because of that grainy uneven texture... when the scene scrolled or rotated, the "dirty screen bits" didn't. So it was looking out a dirty window caked with fine dust. It's really embarrassing when Google's top-of-the-line phone can't be used with their Google Daydream View v2 headset without major issues with visual quality.

I guess Apple and Samsung have tied up all of Samsung's OLED production for the near future, so Google had to settle for the "still not ready for primetime" LG P-OLED. screens.

i seriously thought about a pixel after my nexus decided to go for a swim last week.. but this, the fact that i'd have to wait 2 -3 weeks, and the fact that it cost more led me to go with the s8 instead. i dont think this alone would have really been all that much to really be up in arms about... but toss the rest in there and yeah... made it a no-go for me.

I have one and only experience the blue tint. No grainy display or blotches like other people are claiming. If it wasn't for the blue tint I'd be completely satisfied with the display. Going to try it out during the return period and see if Google does/will do anything to remedy the issue. If not, it's likely going back and at that point I have no idea what phone I'll pick up. Probably try for an iPhone X...

Fake news/overblown "crises"

My Samsung S8 does the same dang thing just not as much I guess..

Also Google can help the situation by allowing owners turn off sRGB just like they did on the original pixel.

Ps what if Samsung started this whole pixel 2 controversy on social media to stifle competition
