Second-Hand Monitors: Security Concerns?

Pretty hard since it's your GPU that has to receive that data and do something with it.

How would it transmit data? If wirelessly, it would have a very limited range so you would have to be a specific target. I suppose one could install a GSM module, but, again, it's unrealistic anyone would bother just to spy on a nobody.

I suppose it's possible they could install a USB device or even just a thumb drive with a payload, connected to the USB hub and tuck it inside a monitor - would take a bit of work to prevent it from showing up as "new Hardware" on Windows, but that isn't impossible, and even if you don't if it's the first time you are hooking up a monitor you may not notice.

It would take something pretty advanced to hack into the video signal - not impossible, but I don't think you'd find any off the shelf solutions that someone could plug in and make to look as if it belonged on the monitor in the first place.

After recently buying a second-hand monitor I got to thinking; how hard would it be to modify a monitor to send screen captures or a video stream?
I have no input on this convo at all, But this made me lol. I guess it MIGHT be possible. With newer gsync and freesync monitors I guess they have some computue technology behind them. The govt can look at all the video games and porn that I watch lol

Yep monitors can’t send data through the power cord and can’t send screen data back to the GPU. This means those monitors obviously have cellular data connections and they are streaming you watching midget porn.

This is so much more complicated than other methods that it really does not make sense. Plus the issue with GSM, etc. is that it is traceable as well.
