So, its supposed to be a cold one this winter, and i have been trying to come up with a good use for all these extra GPU's.
then i discovered FOLDING.... I could build a system for every room, BOOM instant space heaters.

Any thoughts?

Hell yes! Thats what we all do around here. Though you can use them for more than just folding. BOINC has a lot of GPU capable projects. What GPUs do you have?

That’s how I go through the winter in my cave ... no heater needed. But in summer I compensate with the need for ac ... just a different phasing of cost.

My heater is a 1080ti and 980ti ... plus a bit cpu

Just one system per room?
Get a two processor Server boards and put a GPU or two on it. You can do BOINC and Folding and GPUgrid and heat the room nice and toasty.
Been collecting computers for years, I hardly had to buy any fuel oil the last few years. If it gets 10F or colder I may have to turn on the house heat for a little while.
Now I am thinking of a way to make hot water for the house. (Why I use any oil) Water cool the CPU/GPUs and then send that water, to a water to water heat pump hot water heater..
Then in the summer send it into the ground to cool off, so I can run more in the Summer with no A/C load increase.

EDIT:
Ebay has a ton of good used servers, xeons, EEC-R memory for pennies on the dollar.

As a long time Folder and not one that was burned by the BigAdv fiasco I prefer to steer my GPU's to folding and my CPU's to BOINC. CPU folding is not worth the ppd / power draw anymore and actually pushes my i7 CPU's harder and hotter than BOINC projects. I do however put some weaker GPU's which are not good ppd folders to GPUGrid for the team. Every little bit helps.

I personally have a gtx 980 ti, a 960 4gb, 2 480s, quadro fx 1800. And for AMD, I have lots of random cards.

The question is.... Do you have enough PCIe slots and can your current electrical system [H]andle it? LOL

I'm glad this post took off, i was only semi serious, BTW i noticed that [H]ard OCP is in the competition, what/where is the info i need to start folding [H]ard?

Yes i think so, although my last electric bill was $220.... My dad (who is staying with me) likes to keep it cold in the summer.

I wish my bills were $220.......... My last one was almost $600. Old home that has had insulation improvements but seems to still suck the power from the grid like a Vampire in a blood bank. Luckily, we are in the process of purchasing a new home where it is much more energy efficient. :)

In our guides section we (I) have an all inclusive DC list where I also link to resources like the guides for setups. https://hardforum.com/threads/all-inclusive-dc-project-list-v-2.1895029/ However, I believe our FAH guides are a bit outdated. The new v7 application is a lot easier to stumble through. The important thing is to remember to join Team 33 and to make sure you get a unique key for your account. From there, just ask and a few will chime in. I'll bug them until they do. ;)

im thinking of getting a GALAX HOF 1080 ti and a EVGA KingPin 1080 ti and putting them in SLI.... SUPER SPACE HEATER??

SLI will actually not do you ANY good in pretty much all DC projects. Best to run them separate.

The team and id where what i needed, and passkey

this is the old how to for v7...we realy need to do a nice one....

F@H With Windows V7 GUI

1) Apply for a passkey at http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py. You will need to pick a doner name and enter an email address. Your passkey will be sent to your email address. Do not discard your passkey email.
2) Download the current client from: https://folding.stanford.edu
3) Install the client using all of the default options
4) When the installer is finished, let it start the client. You will see a Windows firewall pop-up about fahclient.exe. Click "Allow access".
5) This will open your default web browser pointing to: http://folding.stanford.edu/client/. Click the Identity tab on the page that loads. On the Identity page, enter the donor name and passkey you got from step 1 and team 33. Don't forget to click Save when you are finished.
6) Click the Home tab to return to your home page. Move the intensity slider from Medium to Full. This will force the client to start if it hasn't yet. A definition of the settings can be found below.

Off Folding is disabled
Idle light: Folding will proceed at a reduced speed only when your computer becomes idle.*
Idle: Similar to Idle Light, but tries to get the maximum productivity from your computer only when you are away.
Light: Folding proceeds at a reduced speed at all times, but productivity and system utilization increases when you are away.
Medium: Much more productive than Light. This setting is recommended for most users.
Full: Contribute as much as possible. This setting may cause some machines to get hot or the fan to run very hard. If this is a problem simply move this slider to a lower setting.

You are now folding for Team [H]ardOCP! We have some screenshots of a pretty typical install HERE

F@H With Linux

1) Apply for a passkey at http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py. You will need to pick a doner name and enter an email address. Your passkey will be sent to your email address. Do not discard your passkey email.
2) There are many, many flavors of the Linux OS that F@H can be setup to run on. A few of our members here have gone to great lengths to bring us two especially simple setup guides. Both are almost a completed automated process but also have their differences. Take a look at each and decide for yourself which suits you better.

Ok, so its more like rendering than gaming. i thought maybe they could simultaneously work on the same project, as apposed to working on 2 separate projects.

musky's link for the screenshots is no longer there either... we seem to have a lot of resources in desperate need of modernization.

The only project I know of that will use more than one GPU at the same time on the same work unit is Moo! (or their dnetc client for RC5-72). But even then, you don't SLI them.

You can also run FAH on CPU only (I think) from the Chrome browser

F@H Chrome Browser GUI
1) Apply for a passkey at http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py. You will need to pick a doner name and enter an email address. Your passkey will be sent.
2) Download the Chrome browser if you haven't already here. Install it.
3) Launch Crhome and go to here and fill in your donor name, team (which should be 33) and your passkey which was emailed to you.
4) You can adjust the amount of resources you want to use by adjusting the "slider" from "Light", "Medium", and "Full". You will find that this is about as basic as you can get and doesn't have any more real configuration or tweak options. There is also a start and stop button you can click on if you need.

The NaCl client pretty much pays out a flat rate per work unit IIRC. On single core setups or extremely slow systems, I have found it to pay out better than running the client. Or at least I did for a very small period of time of testing. YMMV. Either way, it is CPU crunching for FAH which means very little bragging rights for PPD.

If you choose to run the Android client, that is a whole different thing altogether. They don't use your key or team on that client. It is provided by SONY and is marketed as a "game". You even get achievements if you have "Play Games" setup on your Google account. I wish they would bridge it to the standard scoring account as well.

I started with the browser, but found it to work better with the downloadable App (more use). I also found out that it didn't like my OC, I was still in the testing stage, but I believe it has to do with memory frequencies. so I'm back to 2133 lol. I recently helped a friend with his OC on his i7-7820x, and couldn't get higher than stock on any thing other than 2400 and below, but at 2133, we hit 5.0 Ghz....

I was about to try the android client, but didn't have a charger near by.

Nice! I don't OC any of my stuff. Too much heat and run my boxes year round. Though you can get more points, you end up spending a lot more money per point by OC'ing. A few of our users will from time to time posting their results for down clocking to get better efficiency. If you have the resources, you can actually run more gear for more PPD for the same monthly expenses.

Honestly? I don't turn the heat on in the winter.
Granted, I prefer it cooler in my apartment.
But I have an i7 970 and a GTX 970 and ruin the Distributed.net client.

If I close the door to my computer room, it becomes unbearably warm in there.
So we use the waste heat with a blower fan to heat the apartment.

again, sorry for being a noob, but what is PPD?

That is my work phARM which also runs money making applications while they run BOINC projects. Together they earn $30-$50/month and I paid $10 or less for each of them new. 2 of them are dual core and 3 of them are quads that I only give 2 cores each to BOINC for DC'ing. I have 5 at my folks house and I would have to re-count the ones at my house doing the same thing as I've had a few come to end of life recently. As you can see in the picture, that Moto E Gen 2 is lucky to still be alive.

I love this, i have tons of old phones as well, i need to get into this

Well, if you want them to earn while you are DC'ing, I can walk you through a few things. Only one app right now is really passive whereas most others are not. The main thing to keep in mind is to keep the phone (esp. battery) cool or you will eventually suffer battery bloat. And on cheap and/or old phones, the batteries can cost almost as much as a new cheapo phone. Like I said, I bought entire new quad core phones shipped to my house for less than $10 on specials. So, why would I pay $5-$10 for a battery?...lol. We do not currently have any Android based setup guides but we can pretty much walk you through them.

ok, if you have time, i can get inventive with cooling... mini fridge lol. also i need to get some work done, so when i have more time i will definitely get a phone PHarm going

That 980 Ti and 960 should generate decent PPD for F@H. The rest I would use on BOINC projects. You'll need to list the AMD cards so I can comment on where they'll be best placed. Basically if they're old they'll do well enough in most BOINC projects, but not so much in F@H.

I'm glad this post took off, i was only semi serious, BTW i noticed that [H]ard OCP is in the competition, what/where is the info i need to start folding [H]ard?

Are you referring to the Formula-BOINC? We have a discussion here: https://hardforum.com/threads/formula-boinc-2017.1922108/ Though I would skip to the last page as most of it isn't current. The last ~3 - 4 pages might still be helpful with what we're doing.

Today is my birthday and the second half of the day at work has been busy. I will try and PM you the info later tonight or sometime tomorrow.
Thank you, I'm gathering up the phones... 3quad core phones and one quad core 2.3 ghz tablet
