Data from Ventro Analytics suggests that Mac envy is rife: results from a survey show that over 20% of Windows users are planning to jump ship to Apple. In contrast, 98% of current Mac owners intend to remain on that platform. A look at different income brackets also reveals that those who earn over $150K are most likely to switch.

...no less than 25% of those with Windows desktop computers were planning to migrate to a macOS machine – and to do so within the next six months. Yes, you read that right: a quarter of all folks who were quizzed by the firm. And the figure wasn’t much smaller when it came to Windows laptop owners, with 21% saying that they intend to switch to a Mac (again within the next six months). On the flipside, and in marked contrast, 98% of those who currently own a Mac plan to stay with an Apple computer for their next purchase. So just 2% are intending a switch to Windows.

Not going to happen, because if it did, that would account for a doubling or more of Apple systems. These same people saying they are going to switch from their $299 windows laptop to a $1k Apple....Ok.

As for those with Apple already, lots of things on those systems are Mac only or are heavy into that eco system, everything from software to hardware that has to be Apple, switching can be costly. This is why many people with iPhones or Android tend to stay with it, because of having to get all new accessories and buy all their apps over again.

So more or less, you have lots of people saying they are going to switch to a premium product from a bottom of the line product, yet the only ones who seem to follow through with that are those making 150k+ a year. What would have been a FAR better question to ask was not how many are going to switch in the next 6 months, but how many actually switched in the last 6 months.

To hell with that.. never going to a Mac.. The iPhone is the only Apple product I ever plan to have in my house.

I don't believe this for a second. What Apple product is mysteriously wow'ing people? If anything, the Apple brand has lost quite a bit of luster in the last 2-3 years. Their computers are as niche as ever.
I might have believed this during 2013-2013 when iPhones and iPads were all the rage and Windows 8 was floundering. These days...no way.

They'll quickly find out that many of the issues they had on Windows also happen on MacOS. Programs can crash, hardware can fail, viruses can happen and last but not least if they're a moron and don't know how to use Windows they'll still be a moron who doesn't know how to use MacOS.

Apple allows financing now for their stuff. I saw a steady increase in how many white trash Mac users I dealt with when I did tech support for Apple Care after that changed. Used to be snooty doctors and rich assholes but now almost anybody with semi shitty credit can have a Mac.

Ya, this seems pretty bogus. 20% of people upgrading to Mac within 6 months. Most people I know don't upgrade for YEARS. Even work laptops are generally about once every 3 years. If you take 100 people, that's 33 people per year.. or 17 people every 6 months.. about 17%.. their sampling would indicate that all of those people upgrade their computers in less than 3 years and 100% of them would upgrade to a Mac when the time comes.

Pretty flawed stats if you ask me.

Its a very real possibility the meant an ipad either that or they have no idea as to the cost of an iMac is cheapest on apples site is this (just looking at that figure and knowing what I could build after the GPU inflation goes down, dual-core, really?):

  • 2.3GHz dual-core 7th-generation Intel Core i5 processor
  • Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
  • 8GB 2133MHz memory, configurable to 16GB
  • 1TB hard drive1
  • Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640
  • Two Thunderbolt 3 ports
  • 1920-by-1080 sRGB display
$1,099.00

Was actually thinking the same thing, a few people I know who are pay check to pay check, yet each have a MacBook. They only YT and FB as well, nothing else is done on the computer and they are over all tech ignorant.

BS. Such market moves for such a huge installed base with such a price premium are unheard of in such a short time.

Another bad survey.

survey done at starbucks/whole foods...
In the Cupertino area!

On another note, the only way I would say this report had any weight is if Apple decided to get back into the desktop market, with a proper ATX, MATX and ITX and expandable systems, like they used to back in the day. And reasonably priced, if not, nah, not happening.

really doubting this survey. Could Apple even make that many PCs in 6 months? I have thought about getting an Apple Mini just to play around with the OS. However, as a gamer not considering moving away from my homemade PC as Apple computers have no upgrade paths.

Oh! so... suddenly OSX is going to see it's market share massively jump? Isn't it currently somewhat close to all the linux/unix systems combined? just have to lol. And yeah, people probably thought iOS.

And we'll look again a year from now and Apple's and Microsoft's market segments will be the exact same.

"Yeah I want one, for sure I *plan* to get one"

"Probably within like say 3-6 months"

"Wait, they cost how much?"

It's OK sir, we got our answer.

anyone here ever been through one of those surveys? Folks will say anything at the time ...enough said

I am sure this is a case of journalist massively taking statements out of context or just making up whatever they want to say. For instance, if you get to an article that is closer to the source it says they will switch in the next 6 - 24 months which is not in the next 6 months. Actually, that would mean they would miss the Christmas season this year. But somehow we were able to just say oh well that means only the first number right?

PFFFFFFT yeah right. I can't tell you how many times I hear people say "I am done with Microsoft!" only to find out that learning a new OS is harder than using the OS they previously had (which they don't have a clue how to use anyway). Spending 4x as much money for the same thing isn't going to fix their problem.

I've been a statistician for many years, and I'm appalled by how many surveys and polls are based on poor science. Most have sample sizes which are too small, rely on overly simplistic assumptions about variance, and are deliberately and/or unintentionally biased. Where are the details about this survey? From what I read in the article, I have as much information as "someone said that many users plan on switching to Apple." Useless.

The phrasing of the quesiton is even more problematic. You can swing the results wildly by asking the quesiton in different ways.

Agreed. You can also survey groups likely to give the response you want, or use a method like phone dialing (as many polls use) with substantial non-response (which usually introduces bias). Long list... getting at the true state of affairs is hard!

ill be the sinner.. I own one. the iMac is a nice AIO, If you wanna spend a kidney on it. I bought it for my wife because I wanted to play with it for video production and I hadn't used a mac in 25 years... I boot it into Windows when I use it though. Mainly to game if I need to be downstairs... would I Buy another? No.. My curiosity was served.

this study is BS... I know no one in my industry that wants a mac. they all need Windows.
