Microsoft's Project Scorpio Named Xbox One X Priced $499.99

I watched the conference with my kids.
I will watch the sony conference tonight, but my kids will have to sit out. They have school tomorrow, so 9pm EST is bedtime. Sorry kids.

Either way, I love the idea of 4k gaming. I do. I will even pay 499 for the console. Do I think it's too high? Yeah, I'd prefer 399, but hell, what's 100 bucks really. Not a lot in 2017.

However - as the show went on I was increasingly disappointed with the games. Exclusive or not, whatever. There appeared to be no games - nada, zero, zip, zilch - that had the ability to immerse you into the game world and slip away from life for a time.
No game immersiveness = no sale for me. Plain and simple.

Seems the focus was on shooters, multiplayer of different types, and social interactivity. Who cares?

Why would I EVER want that? Fun for a couple of days, as a minor distraction, but mundane and monotonous after that.

Gaming is entertainment. To me, the evolution of movies and books. The visuals and sounds of a movie, witht he length and detail of a great book. Something neither format can have. Together in one.

To forego, or in fact willfully ignore, that potential is an insult to the medium.

I play a games to disappear. To slip away from the world around me, into another one. Where I can be someone else, make different choices, live a different experience. And enjoy a fantastic story around the way.

Not BANG BANG story over. WTF is that?

The console will sell. In this day and age of youtube, google, ADD kids, people who can't look away from their phone for more than 15 seconds, and a whole generation of people who can't even socialize in the REAL world well enough to hold a verbal conversation properly, let a lone pass a job interview - these games may be great.

But for those of us who remember what it used to be, the greatness gaming was, it's another reminder of how far it's fallen. Atari crash 2.0. Sooner rather than later.

I have the money, Microsoft. And the desire. You've just given me nothing to play. I beg you, don't take away my favorite hobby. Please, I am DYING to give you money, just to hang on the the last vestiges of what I once loved. Truly I am. Please, hear me and give me something to buy. Even mediocre, I'll take it.

But alas, I think I'll just see more crap like I saw yesterday.

FWIW, I don't expect any different from Sony.

Actually, many consoles at launch are sold at a loss, and this one is likely no exception. They can afford to do this because of the royalties they make off every game sold for the system. So it's a numbers game. How much are they willing to lose up front to hopefully return over time. If they had a stronger lineup, they probably could have dropped the price on the console :(
If it had a stronger lineup, it might actually justify the price. They should have eaten the extra $100. Just like the original XBO. The only way they were breaking the cycle here. It should be within $100 of PS4Pro(preferably $50 or even).

Funny that it's name is starting to look more and more like some early gamer tags for the system. xXColdKillerOneXx, give it time, I am sure they will fit a few more "X" in there somewhere.

That Cartoon Fox title didn't wow you? :-p

But, yeah, agreed. Software wise nothing blew me away that wasn't exclusive.

If you want full backwards compatibility then why not just use the old console you already have till the fad wears off?

Even with all that raw power Gears of war 4 Campaign/Horde mode will remain 30 fps, that cpu bottleneck is still showing its limits.

At least they opted for a internal psu this time.

Man you guys are pure entertainment. What a bunch of whiny bitches. A console for $500 that likely bests 90% of the rigs of people here who have spent thousands. This is comedy gold.

A "console for $500" would be meaningful if the PS4 Pro didn't exist at $399, and with a vastly superior library.

And unfortunately its not actually a console that "bests 90% of the rigs here". Not unless you're completely clueless and buy the marketing-teraflops b.s. blindly. Its still just an old jaguar chip with a clock bump and a better cooler.

Specs ultimately don't win console wars. It's the games.

The system is great, but with no exclusives it doesn't matter. It's not like a bunch of PS4 owners are going to run out and drop $500 when it plays the same games sans Sony's expansive exclusives. Most won't take advantage of this new hardware, either. If they're that antsy, they're probably just as likely to get a PS4 Pro so they can keep the Sony exclusives.
MS is going to need to push some exclusive games to move systems. I don't just mean early access to CoD map packs and Halo/Gears either.

My stupid ass will buy it, but then again I buy all of the consoles and hate myself for it.

I won't be buying one but I still care, what I care about is the fact it drastically raises the bar for developers, with more resources available games coming out in 2018 might launch with proper 64-bit clients and actually use the memory and cores we are putting in these systems, more 4K and HDR content being on the market and being moderately mainstream only helps us all out. Being a member of the PCMR is fine and dandy but for the past decade I feel like we are just getting the console peasants sloppy seconds, and it is bringing us all down.

Do you expect them to sell it at a loss? They may already be pricing it at a very slim profit margin. I'm sure their investors would LOVE to hear that. Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft are companies, they don't make consoles because of the warm fuzzies they get from seeing people game.

They aren't pricing these things respective to the AMD counterparts.

The 4GB RX 570 is slightly faster than the 8GB PlayStation 4 Pro.

The 8GB RX 580 is the same speed as 12GB Xbox Scorpio.

THESE MATCH ON PERFORMANCE INCREASE AND RAM INCREASE.

Only $50 separate these two AMD cards (launch price, not current price because of demand). Where is the consumer value, if Xbox is charging TWICE what the hardware bump is worth?

I was expecting $450 if they want to make money, or $400 if Microsoft was actually serious about moving units over Sony.

Seriously, you are going to piss and moan about $50? XBX gets 4k blurry. It has a more advanced cpu. It has a lot more USEABLE vRam.
The master race will stop at NOTHING to discredit all consoles before and after their launch.

I have the rig in my sig , the last console I bought was a 360, I would like something that will do 4K at 60FPS - How much will it cost me to get there? $499.00 is sounding quite reasonable

XBX gets 4k blurry..

This is the only part of your post you got right. Blur on, XOX, Blur-on. Because there's no way a product with 30% higher GPU power than the Pro is going to do 4k native.

The Pro can barely handle 1440p @ 30fps, and they use up-scaling tricks to do the rest. And that's using current-gen console graphics quality - if you bump the shaders and textures, it's back-down to 1080p@30-60. Cause it's just an RX 470.

And just hope you like being just as CPU-limited as that $400 PS4 Pro, because they're exactly the same processors reused from the older models.

See what I mean? It really is just a GPU bump. So how come Microsoft thinks people will pay twice as much for theirs?

Nobody will be talking about this once Sony drops the bomb with another teaser on the progress of TLOU 2

I'm sure the XOX price complaining will get even louder once Sony starts throwing down their game bombs.

I'm going to call the conference now - they'll open up with a quick teaser video, some exec will show us their sales charts for 20 minutes, then it will just be a steady stream of exclusive game bombs that will leave the crowd hoarse. A good chunk of these games will have 2018 (or no) release dates, but it will get the job done.

And there will be nary a fart for Vita.

I'm more entertained by the asshurt console bitches that get sand in their vaginas every time someone insults their crap boxes. The fact that you actually got your panties twisted up enough to create an account just to post that garbage is the funniest thing about this.

Anyways, $499 doesn't seem out of line at all for what you're getting. I was expecting it to be more than that, honestly. That's not a bad price, especially when you look at console prices in a historical sense. Hell, my Atari 2600 was $199 when it launched, that's almost $800 in today's money! It's meant to be a premium product for serious (console) gamers, and they know that, and that's why they're keeping the one S around. They know this isn't a product for everybody, just like the 1080ti or the Titan aren't mainstream products either. The lineup subjectively leaves something to be desired, but the console itself looks pretty damn solid.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the XOX (lame...) won't support VR. If that's true this console is really hard to justify.

Consoles big selling point was hassle and upgrade free gaming for 7+ years. That's gone now.

I don't get how that's gone. The PS4 still plays all PS4 games. There is no need to get a PS4 Pro. The same can be said about the Xbox One, Xbox One S, and this new Xbox One X.

There is no need to upgrade. Keep chugging along on the original PS4 or original Xbox One, until they release an actual next gen console.

But then you want to play a game the way it plays and looks on the X and then a developer makes games that are pretty specific to the better console etc. etc. Oh MS have said that the less powerful console wont get left behind but...

You had one level of hardware for the stretch of a generation. That's not the case anymore. You now have multiple SKUs with differing levels of power and functionality. Another point about consoles was the lack of confusion. You just bought a PS3 or a 360 and done. The only difference was debatable value accessories or debatable value storage. The core machines were the same. Now which one does Dad buy Johnny for Xmas?

He buys whatever he wants to buy, cause they'll all still play the games. You get what you can afford. I'd love to play games at 4K with max settings, spanned across 3 monitors, but I don't. Just because you want to, doesn't mean you're going to. At which point, you'll just settle for what you can get. Why I'm not rocking a 1080 TI in my computer.

As for lack of confusion...that went out the window with the PS3. Features were added and removed as time went on. Wifi, media card reader, amount of USB ports, BC, Other OS support, SACD support, different audio support, Sixaxis controller, etc. Add or remove some of those features, depending on which SKU you had.

Sony said the PS4 wasn't going to get left because cause of the PS4 Pro. PS4 hasn't been left behind. More like no one is bothering to make use of the PS4 Pro. I feel the Xbox One X will have the same issue as the PS4 Pro. Why bother spending more time making games that can use the power, when you can just hit the standard Xbox One specs. Unless the Xbox One X sells like hotcakes (which I doubt it will), devs probably won't care to make use of it's power.

Its DOA at that price, only fanbois will buy one. High price + NO exclusive titles = no sales.

I'd add that for $499, if they really wanted to convey "premium" console as Spencer keeps insisting, they could have bundled the Elite controller as standard. That would've at least given undecided buyers a real tangible to consider.

And how have you determined that it is a high price? Amazing, you probably said the XBox One is a DOA item as well, eh?

It pretty much is. Been losing money since day one, has ZERO exclusive titles now that they are pushing "play anywhere", and the new one will sink like a rock. Check back in a year, let me know how my predictions are doing. And yes, I predicted (accurately) that they Xbox one would be outsold by at least 2:1 by the PS4 when it launched at $499 vs the PS4 at $399. Apparently no one at MS remembers...watch history repeat.

He's just being obtuse, because there's no defending the pricepoint. Everyone knows the PS4 Pro exists, is $399, and will quite possibly go even lower by the time Scorpio goes on sale if Sony decides to make it ugly.

LOL Dude, LOL! :D Never miss an opportunity to bash MS and anything they do, eh? I see no issue with the $499 price point, especially considering it is faster than the 4 Pro and comes with a 4k Blu Ray player. Now, well will see if or when Sony releases the 4 Pro + or whatever they will call it. However, last time I checked, being outsold does not mean it is a DOA product.

Oh well, say what you will, they are not losing money on the One but, just not making as much as Sony.

and social interactivity. Who cares?.

Millennials, it's the only way they can function in this cruel world.

Glad Nintendo said screw your social BS with zelda... and i think the sales numbers speak for themselves. Not sure why the mega publishers can't figure this out.

Nor your Jedi like reflexes to defend them. Yea, everyone knows physical media is the future.

Nothing but net, eh? Nice shot there, LOL! Yeah, that is it, I am defending them, must be it. LOL :dummy::rolleyes::whistle:;) Sorry, I just see no reason to bash something all the time just because. If you look, I do not bash anything but am willing to try it all. Chances are, I will buy this day one, as long as I can use my camera with it and all my games. Then I can just give my One to someone else to enjoy.

You two should just makeout already. I'll be over here watching in this closet.

Good for you! Go get em tiger!

I need a new Xbox, my launch era died. I was holding it for this, and while it looks good for the money, not having a 4k display in the house, I really think I'll pick up an S in the interim. Not having the resolution, the price is harder to justify

This song and dance again. Most people said PS3 was the end for physical media. 10 years later, blue ray is the best bet for highest quality 1080p picture and sound. The same will hold true for BR4K 10 years from now.
The future moves slower than everyone expects. If you want 4k movies, STREAMING WILL NOT CUT IT for most of the population.
Sorry savvy tech geeks - physical media will not die for a LONG time

The problem is that Xbox isn't pushing real exclusives, they have plenty of console exclusives but since microsoft isn't trying to shaft PCs are much many of the good games that are console exclusives are also on PC. PS4 has plenty of console exclusives as well but they have many many more sony systems only exclusives. It's kind of shitty of sony but it does sell consoles as per your comment.

I imagine more hours of 4k have been watched over streaming video than off blu-ray at this point, as just about every 4k tv will serve netflix/amazon but not many 4k players in the wild. Not to say it's good enough for me since I have an Atmos setup, but for most of the population, it's definitely acceptable. Yeah there are still people who play vinyl in 2017 so it never really dies, it just becomes a cult (though honestly, i'm not aware of the existence of an audiocassette with dbx cult out there, so maybe some technology does die)...

Not a selling point for the masses. They've decided MP3 was good enough. So for a console, completely unnecessary, driving up the cost, and holding on to the past. So it was a great design decision on their part.
