Have this mounted in a PCIe adapter, this look about right?
 
My 960 Evo (0.5 TB model plugged into MB M.2 slot) scores 2,748 - 1,646 - 400,352 - 269,863

Aside from your sequential reads, your drive running no faster than a SATA drive. Have you installed the Samsung NVMe driver? Might explain why most of your numbers are so low.

I wonder if you have your BIOS set properly. It's supposed to be running at PCI-E x4, correct?

Keep in mind that the drive size tends to dictate small differences in performance across similar models.

That said, something is busted with OPs numbers. Those are huge differences. The adapter does introduce an extra variable in question.

OP: Does the adapter itself support NVME? (Edit: nevermind the amazon store page link indicates it does. Wonder if the PCIe device itself is using a generic driver?)

I'd like to adjust my answer after looking more closely at that item. The adapter is a PCIe Gen 2 device, that may limit the bandwidth compared to a Gen 3 PCIe device.

Would that limit a 960 Evo? No. Might affect next year's model though.

Well I just tested mine which is a 1TB so not much use for comparison I guess, that said mine is problematic in that a read score of 1700MB/s so something wrong with mine.

Probably that it's too full (750GB used) but still...
 
I just updated firmware and NVME driver, getting same result. If I run Crystal Disk however mark I get the 3300/1800 for reads and write that I'd expect.
 
I want to thank you guys for making me look at mine and finding I too had a problem.

mine was using the MS drivers so I updated to Samsungs and it did improve but still seems slow in the sequential R/W, even compared to my 850 pro. if I get time today i'm going to poke around.

The Magician app is not really consistent with benchmarking. CrystalDiskMark and having Window's Task Manager showing the drive statistics would be better.
 
Well I've tracked mine down. It's antivirus that killed my results.

CrystalMark doesn't trigger the AV, if I run Samsung Magician then it goes slow. If I pause the AV it goes much much faster.

I'm using ESET for reference.
