So this weekend I stopped by my local Best Buy and T-Mobile store, just to window shop, and peruse and look at new smartphones.

If you know my history you know I'm a big Android nerd, specifically Nexus phones, but I am currently on an iPhone 7 Plus since Christmastime, mainly due to the great battery life. But really not a fan of iOS, it's ok, but much prefer stock Android #1.

My impressions of the hot new phones;

- Galaxy S8/S8+ = The screen display is amazing yes, but overall feel in the hand did not impress me much. It feels so slippery and fragile, like could easily break. Almost as if holding an egg afraid to drop. Seems like one drop would destroy this phone. Whereas my iPhone 7 Plus, damn I have dropped it without a case by accident several times, and zero damage or problem. And the materials of the S8, for some reason does not give me that super premium feel like other phones, it felt weird, and sort of squishy almost if that makes sense ? And then Touchwiz or whatever they call it, yes it is greatly improved updated and seems a lot nicer now, and I know these were demo phones, but the lag was there absolutely. But again these are floor models running that god awful demo mode, so hard to get a true experience. But overall I left with a feeling with the S8 being nice, but not making me drool as a must have

- LG G6 = Wow super impressed, did not expect to like this one bit, but it was shockingly really good. The size for a 5.7" phone, and in that tough tank type build, was just great. To me the prefect sized smartphone. I like 5.7" screens, but shrunk down like that was just spot on the best. The LG UI seemed sort of like a generic stock Android, or bland lame version of stock Android, which I'm sure a good theme could rectify and make it much nicer. But I still think LG screwed up on the specs. I think they should have waited for the SD835, not for benchmarks, but for the more efficient processor, the 835 is like 40% more efficient over last years SOC, and for marketing it just sounds better on paper saying same hardware as the new Galaxy S8, as opposed to saying running last years hardware. Even though I know performance wise there's very little difference. If I was making the LG G6 I would have waited to release until June, and put in the SD835 with a slightly larger 3,600mAh battery like last year's S7 Edge. Those two differences would make a massive help in the battery life department.

And LG, you guys make the best #1 OLED home theater TV's on the market, the OLED TVs from LG blow away Samsung's and Sony's, so why are they still using the LCD tech in their phones ? I am shocked they haven't brought their OLED TV tech down to their smartphones yet ? It would rival or even trump Samsung's displays. As it is, the G6 screen is meh, not bad, not great.

- Pixel XL = Ahh the white unicorn of smartphones, the ghost that you hear about, but never see. I walked into Best Buy asked about the Pixel XL, the guy was a cool nerd, he laughed, said no, Best Buy stopped selling the XL at the new year. He said feel free to call Verizon about it, they out of stock too still. I did call 10, yes ten different Verizon stores in the Chicago area, everyone of them said nope on the XL in stock, all needed to be special order. But while in Best Buy off in a dark corner, they actually had a Pixel XL on display, turned off, back in some area where the crappy phones are. I have never seen one in real life before, and was really impressed, the build quality looked great, but the design was so inspired by the current iPhone, it was funny, but I was ok with it. I thought the Pixel XL was a very good looking phone, solid build quality, really liked it a lot. The phone was off, and I turned it on, and it tried updating itself. But overall I really liked it a lot. But the screen seemed sort of dim, and not as good as other phones. I asked the salesman if I could buy it on the spot for a deal since it was a demo phone, he said nope, that phone wasn't for sale, said he didn't even know they had it there.

- iPhone 7 Plus = I already currently have this phone. You all know my thoughts on this phone. Great battery life, super smooth zero lag OS. But everything else I do not like. Notifications suck balls on iOS 10. The Phone dialer app blows. iMessage I don't get the hype, it's ok. And zero customization, I mean come on Apple it's 2017, at least let us move the app icons to where ever the heck we want. And give us some basic sort of theme engine in iOS 11 already.

So for me, I am looking to ditch the iPhone, but need a phone that gets at least the same battery life as my 7 Plus, and is also as smooth and lag free.

The phone I would like does not exist. It would be the LG G6 phone, ( really like the shape and overall size and flat screen of the G6 ) but running stock Android Nougat directly updated from Google, but have the latest SD835 in it and a 3,500mAh battery, and the OLED display tech from LG's TVs. That would be my dream phone. And it's not like a super fantasy Star Trek phone, something like that could almost exist.

Aside from the OS and the specific processor, looks like you want the rumored iPhone 8 (which will probably have a better processor with an optimized OS). Apple is getting the OLED displays from LG and Samsung. I wonder if there would be a quality difference between the two panels.

Best phone in the US that I've seen so far is the Mate 9, IMO. But I have been looking for a phone with stereo speakers and an IR blaster again since I moved on from my One M8. The only thing I wish it had was an AMOLED display, but its (1080p even) LCD has received much praise in the reviews I've seen still. Best Buy carries them online, but I haven't been able to find one in any of their stores yet to test one out.

I might jump on one once I see a decent sale at some point though. Until then my 6P is still chugging along nicely on the latest Pure Nexus ROMs. Though I recently got bit by the premature shutdown bug; I've ordered a new battery and will replace it this weekend and it should be as good as new then.

I have been rocking the g6 since late march.. I will without a doubt tell you that I am glad they didnt do the SD835 in it.. So little of the battery life depends on the CPU I will take 6 month old tech to get the fact that LG had 6 more months & previous phones to test & tweak the efficiency of this thing. I charge my phone while at work on a cheap 10 dollar qi charger & then not again until I am back the next day. & when I get back my battery is at 40-50% most days. Thats with several hours of web surfing/video's each evening. My previous device an iPhone 7 I was down to 15-20 percent when I went to bed & had to charge it overnight with the same habits (was also 100% when I left work daily). Hell my daughter who no matter how many times I have told her to close apps made it from Friday afternoon (~80% charge when I dropped her off to her mom) until Sunday night on one charge with 18% remaining. No airplane mode or turning off wifi, BT or location even. Lighter usage then normal for her, but still with multiple running apps & no extra power saving measures it was over 48 hours.

I had another friend who didnt believe me about the battery life, but she still gave in & went from the iPhone 7plus to the g6 & she is equally impressed with the battery life.

After using every flagship phone for the last couple years I have not had any of them from any manufacturer (only flagship phone I havent had was the pixel) continue to impress me after the first couple weeks until this G6. Lots were very good devices, but this thing is flat out impressive.

So went in to T-Mobile they want $130 down on the S8+. I am on JoD ( Jump on Demand ) typically they program just requires paying the taxes upfront only.

And I also need to switch my sim card out put in my wife's phone for 24 hrs and then come back for the deal to go well and smooth. Not sure what that's about ?

So I'll think about it and come back tomorrow.

Had a V20 last week, disappointed in the camera performance, couldn't really do much with the Hi-Fi quad DAC in it since my hearing ain't what it used to be (in spite of me having a few gigs of 24-bit 96 kHz vinyl rips and some other stuff from HDTracks as well) even though I had headphones to kick the DAC into operation, honestly just all around disappointed in it sadly so I sold it off Swappa for a small profit and bought - get this - another LG G4 for $35 (Korean F500S model) and it works great. Yes I know it could potentially up and die and bootloop at any minute so that just makes it that much more precious I'd say. :D

Still takes the best damned images of any smartphone I've ever used including the S8/S8+/iPhone 7 Plus/LG G5/G6 and anything else too. Got my yellow leather back on it, ordered 2 Anker batteries and a cradle charger, getting a new camera lens cover (previous owner scratched the present one somehow), not a mark on the display glass which will have a matte screen protector on it when that arrives in a few days.

I'm good to go. ;)

As for the Franco statement above, yeah, I've used his kernels in several devices over the years, one of them gave me the best battery life I'd ever seen on one device (which I can't even recall now since I go through 'em so often, geez). He's a true genius in terms of kernel development for Android though, that I'd stand behind in a second (and I've donated to him as well because of his excellent tools).

You keep reposting the same thing again and again, that's 3x now. :D

Cool appreciate the advice.

Try that, this new forum software is always going to do what it can to provide the linked material I guess, not sure if that can be disabled on a per-post basis (need to add the https:// of course). I had to paste the full link, preview it (which loaded the Google+ full view thing), then edit the post to remove the https:// portion and it stayed a link anyway, weird. :D

I pre-ordered the s8 the week it was coming out. Coming from a long line of just owning only Nexus devices since the Nexus One and probably skipping every other one until the Nexus 6P. When I first got it I loved the hardware, it looks amazing to me and felt great but Touchwiz was killing me. Coming from Nexus devices where I had no bloat stock android I was torn. I was considering returning it but figured I'd try it out for the 2 week period first.

I did as much as I could to remove the bloat and get that somewhat google stock feeling back. I put the Google launcher back on and some stock google apps. After about 10 days I was sold, the phone is great. Great Battery life for me, fast and great display. Yeah the finger print senor sucks, I still use it though not as good as my Nexus 6P sensor at all but it work. The iris scanner works surprisingly well too. If the Pixel 2 were out Id definitely would have gotten that and I'm still waiting to see when it comes out, maybe I'll see the s8 for that but right now this phone is the best phone for me. You can always give it a try for a couple weeks. I got the s8 + from best buy that had it for $100 off and free gear vr. Going to cost me and extra 25 on my att bill.

The reading I have done says it had nothing to do with waiting. Apparently Samsung got an exclusive from Qualcomm for the SD835 till the end of the year to keep competitors away.

Of course, watch as there's a Snapdragon 836 that has a slightly different clock speed and conveniently gets around the exclusive...

(I wouldn't be surprised if the terms prevent that, I just suspect Qualcomm has an alternative in the pipeline if the 835 is a 2017 exclusive.)

This Samsung/Qualcomm thing hopefully won't last after Samsung is supporting the FTC against Qualcomm. It's so ridiculous. The biggest flaw of the LG G6 is that last gen soc. Maybe LG can pull off a OnePlus and launch LG G6T or something.

iMessage I don't get the hype

iMessage is the biggest (if not the only) reason I'm still using an iphone. Group messaging just works. When you send a group message to 5 people, all 5 get it and let you know whos included in the group message. When one person replies to that group message, everyone gets it. When you send a photo or video, you get the full resolution version. There are no limitations on media size like with SMS. When my wife sends a 5 minute video of my son doing something while im at work, I get the full 5 minute video in its full resolution. When she sends a picture of something, I get the full resolution picture. This works in group messages too. It integrates SMS for all of your non-iphone users so you can use 1 app for everything. People wont get the full benefits of iMessage if they aren't on IOS, but it at least works. How many messaging apps has Google put out in the last few years? Their eco system is fragmented at best. None of their messaging apps integrate SMS either. I know someone is going to cry "But but but Alttabbins.. WHATSAPP does the same thing and works great!!", sure maybe it does over in Europe where EVERYONE uses it regardless of their phone, but in the US nobody wants to nag and bug all of their friends to install a messaging app that still doesn't do as much as imessage. Google came close with Hangouts but just missed the mark without sms integration.

Once RCS standard comes alone in the next couple of years, iMessage would be the one playing catch up. The problem with RCS is that carriers or whomever such as Google would have to host, and, boy, would Google like to host (to scan through your messages for ads). And the hosts would have to be able to talk to each other, and that standard really don't exist yet. (Apple is already a host for iMessage and FaceTime.) Obviously everything hosted by Google would be able to talk to each other, but T-Mo and Verizon, for example with their "advanced messaging" services, do not.

But I think we are getting their with Google putting their weight on it by having a Google-standard way to communicate with each server.

Three. Hangouts, Messages, and Allo, which was developed for 3rd world countries to try to replace Whatsapp and really, was dead before it even launched.

Two of them integrated SMS, and one is exclusively for SMS.

Hangouts is moving to the corporate space, to be an alternative to Slack. Messages will hopefully get a wider range of RCS compatibility, but that's between the carriers, OEMs and Google.

Look, I get that iMessage lets you send full videos and images. I'm using the 7+, and honestly it's such a non-entity for me, but if I had an iPad/Mac I can see it being much more useful.

HOWEVER, to say that group SMS "just works" is a bit of a stretch. I've never seen a non-iMessage group SMS fail, unless the person sending it was a former iPhone user and didn't remove themselves from iMessage. At that point, I'm putting the blame more on Apple & the user than anyone else.

Android's confused messaging strategy is a snapshot of Google: it normally does things very well, but when it doesn't quite know what to do... it's a mess.

Seriously: if it had committed to integrating SMS into Hangouts in the long term, it probably wouldn't have needed much more. Instead, it keeps changing its mind, heading whichever way the wind blows. And the current Allo/Duo strategy has a strong whiff of Apple envy: it desperately wants something like the iMessage/FaceTime combo (with some WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger thrown in), but it doesn't seem to understand why that works for Apple. Play to Android's strengths, Google, don't just roll out me-too apps.

If Allo/Duo is better intergrated, then it'll be more like iMessage/FaceTime combo. Heck, there's not a video/audio chat with Duo link inside of Allo. So it's not even Apple envy; it's more like this below.

Team 1: WTF we're going to build a video chat only app!
Team 2: WTF, we're going to create another messaging app! Allo! Like cockney Brits! Allo!
Team 1: Okay, Team 2, we're going to call ours Duo cause it rhythms with your Allo!
Peasant: But what does Duo have to do with video chatting?
Team 2: Didn't we already tell you. It's rhythms with Allo!
Peasant: Are they integrated?
Team 1 + 2: No, and why should they?
Peasant: Cause it'll be more like iMessages.
Team 1 + 2: Nah nah nah nah nah nah! We can't hear you!
Peasant: .............

Meanwhile...

Team 3: WTF, Slack is awesome. Let's build a Google alternative. You know what would be a good name? Hangout!
Peasant: But isn't there already a Hangout for messaging? And isn't Google Wave what Slack was modeled after?
Team 3: Hold on, let send the Hangout Team a message through Slack.
Hangout Team: What? You want to make Hangout into Slack?!? OKAY! WE LOVE IT!
Team 3: Done!
Peasant: But what about voice and text messaging features in Hangout?
Team 3 + Hangout Team: Fuck you, go use Messages and Google Voice.
Peasant: But what about Allo or whatever Duo is?
Team 3 + Hangout Team: What are you talking about? Never heard of them!
Peasant: .............

And this entire thing will probably change again in 6 months. Its one of the things that drives me absolutely nuts with Google.

I started watching for the Q sn 835 when they were announced .. looked like a phenomenal step up . But the real world benchmarks (including battery) only seeing same or modest gains vs 821 .. so will see .

Kenny

the 835 is all about efficiency. It's not much faster (at all really, in real world) but it's a power sipper.

Trading up to an S8 from an S6 later this Summer; usually skip 1 generation and this time is no different. Pleasantly surprised by the newer androids though!

I mean, just bring back Google Wave and be done with it... /s
The sad part is Slack was originally only developed because Google killed Wave, which is named after the fictional communication service in Firefly. Google could have resurrected Wave and made it and better, and also improve hangout; but instead, let's confuse the shit out of us peasants by changing one service we've used forever to something else while adding three redundant services that at least 2 are DOA. I'm sorry. I could immediately guess what product FaceTime would be, but Duo? What is that? Allo? What you expect us to know Allo means "different" and is it supposed to sound cool like cockney hello?

In the future, we're going to get a GChat app that integrates SMS/RCS/Video Chat/Voice... actually, Google is just going to call it Google Aye or Google Lychee or Google Wannanosaurus.

Hangouts was nearly perfect for me and my particular usage, everything in that one app until recently when Google stripped it of proper SMS support and pushed that to a secondary app (that I really don't have any use for but now find myself not having much choice in the matter).

It really aggravates me to no end when companies do something right then they fuck it up after the fact, this is just another example of that with Hangouts and the alterations to it.

Dammit Google, stop fucking up the things I like. :)

I have a OnePlus 3T. $440 for the 64GB; AMOLED, super fast, smooth, and best fingerprint sensor available. I'm really looking forward to the OP 5 in June.

I love my S8+. Had it since launch, upgraded my S7 Edge. I run the material dark theme from the theme store and it pretty much looks like stock android as well. The battery life easily lasts a day or longer for me and my S7 Edge barely would last half a day. I got about 3 1/2 hours of screen time with the S7 Edge and I'm getting between 6 and 7 with the S8+.

Look... I have the S7. My wife has the S8. I don't care how much you theme it, it doesn't look anything like stock android outside of the launcher, if you use the Pixel Launcher.

Android's confused messaging strategy is a snapshot of Google: it normally does things very well, but when it doesn't quite know what to do... it's a mess.

The last few years they have been trying to compete with everyone on every front instead of concentrating their strengths into a few key applications and services. The result is a collection of disjointed products and services that are often half baked and lack any real foresight, innovation and appreciable progress. Jack of all trades and a master of none. IMHO, thats what happens when you try to manage so much under one roof and I guarantee all these entities are in silos in one huge vertical org; only the people at the top see whats going on and no one in the silos talks to one another.

Now you have them trying to be the next apple by locking down their ecosystem. My guess is because they are afraid of more OEM's doing what Samsung is trying to do, turn android into their own OS.

Holy crap! The HTC U11 just won the best camera and video on dxomark with a 90 point score.

https://www.dxomark.com/Mobiles/HTC-U11-Mobile-review-The-new-DxOMark-leader

Never expected HTC to ever top the list. Google Pixel might be made by HTC, but I assumed it was Google's software. Now I don't know if HTC used that new knowledge from Google or it's been HTC all along.

Google's software definitely plays a large role, but remember that the BlackBerry KEYone also takes high-quality photos with a similar sensor. I suspect it was just a matter of HTC finessing an already great camera.

Google needs to offer pixel launcher officially on the store. I'm using Google now launcher and it looks pretty much stock unless you start diving into the settings.

Call me crazy, but...

I am going back to my Nexus 6P. I left Android to try an iPhone first in years, went with the 7 Plus, and I will admit in some areas it's a excellent phone, in other areas it sucks balls. But the good was; Battery life is outstanding, and iMessage is really cool. And the overall smoothness and zero lag was good to see. But iOS without a JB just blows. And Notifications on iOS is a freaking mess and done so poor. No back button. Laundry list of frustrating things the way iOS works. I gave it a shot, and the 7 Plus is a great phone, but iOS needs more work to keep me, I just don't like the way it works. But if Apple truly revises iOS big time, I would go back and stay, but the changes I want I doubt ever come to iOS.

I then picked up a brand new Galaxy S8+, and returned it 48hrs later LOL. Another great phone, and I could tell would have excellent battery life for sure, but Touchwiz or whatever they call it, still has some minor lag and micro stutter, and all the bloat sucks, but can be disabled, but overall I felt the S8+ was cool, but not "Oh my god super duper awesome best phone ever" Uh, no. just not my cup of tea.

I then got the LG G6, and totally tweaked it to Nexus / Pixel type style and all Google apps Nova, etc... But it still seems a bit laggy, and very plain jane. The G6 is a big meh, nice, not great, not bad, is ok. the best thing is the overall size of the phone, a 5.7" screen, that feels like a much smaller 5.2" phone almost. Battery life is surprisingly really good on the G6, easily 6h Screen On time. But other than that, the phone does nothing for me. I am giving it to my Wife, and tkaing my 6P back.

I bought a new tempered screen protector and new slim case for the Nexus 6P, then I will wipe it down clean, and do a total system reset with a fresh new ROM, or maybe the new Android O Developer preview 2 due out this week.

Only two tor three phones on my radar now, #1 being the Pixel 2 XL, maybe the OnePlus 5, but we'll see, and the iPhone 8, but that's based more on what iOS 11 offers, if they finally add customization, and totally redo system Notifications, and add some type of theme engine, I'd go back. But I highly doubt that's happening on stock iOS 11. I mean come on Apple, the notification system just sucks on iOS 10, just so bad, in every area. And for the love of God, can you please offer at least a dark theme, like Samsung and LG, and HTC offer on Android phones for free, stock. And how bout icon packs already, I mean WTF those lame ass icons from iOS 7 look lame as fuk, give the option for icon packs for ****s sake.

So out of all my recent phones the past 18 months, I still like my Nexus 6P with a good ROM #1.

That's a nice lineup to look forward to. Perhaps you might also want to hang around to see what Nokia and Motorola will be offering as 2017 flagships? Especially since both of them are likely to be close to stock Android.
