New Ryzen chipset is out

I stumbled upon that one a few days ago and I tried to update but it said my currently installed version was newer (from latest crimson drivers).

AMD driver installations are a complete shit-show. Every time I try to update, I download the driver, run the installer, then get a screen with 3 choices. "current" "local" "recommended"

OK...so I KNOW I just downloaded the correct newest driver, so is "local" the right answer? Seems like it should be. But then here they are telling me there is something newer/recommended, and I'm always like WTF.

JUST INSTALL THE GOD DAMN THING I JUST DOWNLOADED THAT IS ALL I WANT.

Reinstall Current.

Install the content of the file.

Run a check to determine if the content of the file is older than current or superseded by newer online drivers.

Am I wrong in assuming that this, relatively simple schema, is what those options mean?

I don't know, and I've been running AMD CPU and GPU forever! The numbering system is never intuitive (especially for chipset related installs) so you can't simply pick the "highest/newest" number of the group.

I'm not a dumb person, but I honestly have no idea what AMD is doing with these driver installs. I'm running a few HTPCs on AMD APUs and it's the same way.

Huh the chipset drivers suppose to add around 8% performance boost? Can anyone verify?

The short version is almost as much performance as standard Performance power plan (occasionally better) while still getting benefits of balanced power plan.

I'll give it a whirl this weekend.

I loaded up the drivers last night but didnt really do any testing, just played some overwatch. Everything seemed okay. Still trying to figure out with my manual OC on my asrock x370 killer on the 2.1 bios I can not seem to get the CnQ to work, or even on stock to see if the turbo core/xfr to work

You have to OC with PStates to get the downclocking to work.

I was like WTF is this title? A new Chipset? Bummer.... hahaha CLick Bait 101 lesson right here...

I have updated to the latest chipset drivers but have NO CLUE what they do over the last ones. Any info?

Nothing's new in this driver, just packaged in the balanced perf driver for Windows.

Kyle is that why after installing it I saw the same balanced performance option in windows.I thought it would say AMD Balanced performance option.
Dunno. I have not installed those yet, but I did drop AMD a mail about those yesterday with a question on what exactly the changes were.

Mine does.

I installed it and it seems fine. Didn't do any crazy tests or anything but didn't notice anything off.

AMD Ryzen™ Community Update #3 (April 6, 2017)
https://community.amd.com/community/gaming/blog/2017/04/06/amd-ryzen-community-update-3

4/26/2017 Update: The AMD Ryzen Balanced Power Plan is now included in the official AMD chipset drivers starting with version 17.10! Simply download and install the latest chipset driver package, and the new plan will be automatically configured for you. Windows 10 64-bit is required.

My R7 1700 idles at low frequencies with the balanced plan so I use that.

I ended up going back to the normal Balanced plan. Thermals are much better, as I can idle on desktop around 27C w/ the water cooling.

Yea I've personally not bothered using the High Performance plan on my system. With all the programs these days that are still either single-threaded or only two-threads, it seems more of a benefit to stick with Microsoft's Balanced plan and reap the benefits of Boost :)

I wouldn't be too surprised if all AMD did was make a copy of High Performance, change the "Min CPU Usage" to 5% instead of 100%, then call it Balanced lol I mean you can edit the "New" power plan that users can make in the registry and add in the additional "Info" text to make it look official. I did that initially on my own test "Ryzen" plan. Though I had actually been trying to pull off way more, by keeping it truly based on the Balanced plan but making changes to the Core Parking aspect, specifically by lowering the delays (about halfway between HiPerf and Bal) as well as the loads that trigger a core to Unpark. In the end, it was just too much for me to care about continuing to accomplish, as there are SO many registry entries (all GUID labeled) and we only are allowed to change like 15% of them in the Power Settings interface :\ My secondary goal (which failed as well) was to try and get those to show up in the Power Settings list, that way it'd have an easy to navigate user interface, so it was a bummer that it didn't work out. heh

In the end I just keep the "Power" shortcut on the desktop in the bottom-right corner, and if I need to change it to High Perf for some reason, it's easy to access. I sure do miss the old days on WinXP (don't recall if Vista/7 does) where you could just click on it in the taskbar and select which Plan to use, compared to what they do now by making you open up the stupid Settings CP to do that. (I know I could easily make a batch file shortcut to accomplish that, but we shouldn't need to!)

Lastly, +1 for the failure to include "drivers" in the thread topic ;) Tsk tsk.

why the hell would you use a balanced power plan on a desktop? this is [H]ard, its always on, pedal to the floor!

So the main reason I use it is that XFR only kicks in on Balanced profile, meaning you will never see the "boost clock" speeds from your CPU unless you OC. Plus, thermals are much better for idle/desktop use so maybe less stressful for the system.

I installed the new Chipset Drivers, and this new Ryzen Balanced Power Plan isn't showing up. Any hints as to why not?
Same here, is it just incorporated into the Windows Balance plan or modifying it?

no it should show a new plan and is labeled as "amd balanced" theres a pic of it somewhere around here...
maybe try the new 17.5.1 driver that came out today.

So I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling and it showed up this time. I think you also need the Windows 10 Creator's update as well. (That's a guess on my part)

I have the creators update installed??? Will try again.

I wound up finding AMD balanced inadequate. I had automatic reboots occurring while using my browser which did NOT occur with the performance power plan. Don't blame my voltages they are fine even under stress with the performance plan.

I will get a chance tomorrow to dig back into this and have some more fun. I use the Power Plan anyways setting the Minimum power to 20% so the processor will downclock. I just don't see any advantages with AMD's plan and at default it appears just to keep everything at max cpu speed anyways.
