Hey all. Just curious as to DDR4 pricing. I built a 6700K system with 32GB(2x16GB) Gskill DDR4 PC2400 memory about 4 mos ago. Only paid $124 for the kit of memory. Now that same kit is $200+. Wondering if pricing is expected to come down after the holidays etc... Or if they will remain high. I'll pay the extra if the prices are expected to stay up, but hate it when I buy high and next day the prices drop :/ lol. I hope to build a Ryzen system if the cpu doesn't suck. Would be nice to get 64GB of DDR4 to go with that build :). So prices do matter a bit.

I've been noticing this as well. Can't remember where I read this, but it was brought up in some articles about 4/5 months ago or so, that there was some over-production that lead to lower profits by memory companies, so production was slowed down in the last few months of 2016 to bring these prices up by 2017 since demand wasn't as strong as anticipated. That, plus new CPUs being released right now, is why a 16GB 2400mhz stick that used to cost $55 in July now costs #90. It'll come down, but it may take until May or so to do so (let's hope sooner).

gotcha, the ebb and flow of memory overproduction and scarcity. I don't miss those days of hunting certain chipped dimms before the days of big memory makers. Would be some crazy fluctuation in prices of infineon/winbond chipped dimms.

Definitely wait if this is for a future build. The high demand for NAND coupled with supply issues has driven up SSD prices as well.

I buillt a I7-6700K system in the middle of October last year and installed 16gb of G-Skill 3000 memory that costs me 68.00. I looked today and it's 120 bucvks for the same memory! Wow!!! Glad I bought it wen I did because other than the case the CPU, memory and motherboard are all up in price! Not the time to build , expand or update if you're looking to save money!

That's strange. The price are usually going down very quickly for the memories stuff. Maybe you bought it during an offer for christmas ? Usually, all the 6 month, their is new stuff more powerfull, so the price should decrease.

Prices were low due to over supply. Production has been reduced and prices are up
Might be a new FTC case in a few years.

Just bought 8GB 3200mhz Patriot DDR4 for 47 bucks. $47!!! 3200mhz!! If you needed to buy memory, go NOW!

Any particular reason why they've jacked up the prices on RAM?

there used to be a lot of companies that made memory chips.

now there aren't that many which means it's easier to control the price.

i'm not shouting price fixing but im not not shouting price fixing.

Actually you can. There's a reason people study market trends and supply-chains.

Well then buy ram when you feel like its cheap and you had a good deal if that makes you happy.
I paid 140$ for 16gb vengeance 3200 ram 2 months ago, seriously, I dont know how much ram you need but at that price you could as well buy 32 gb and not bother....

You will save more by shopping online specials vs trying to predict market prices. Just buy it when theres a good rebate online, thats what i did, and i saved 40$.

Prices for the same ram are 192$ full price today. 170 on amazon. Not too bad.

No no, I agree with that completely. I just bought 8GB 3200 Patriot Viper Elite ram (16-16-16-36 timings, not bad!) 2 weeks ago for $46. FORTY-SIX BUCKS. That is a great deal and went for it - later that day it went up to $85 again. I've seen it at $55 a couple times since, but it keeps fluctuating.

This is however unrelated to the fact that memory tends to be overpriced at the moment because of market supply issues: barring any deals, it's been too expensive for the past 5 months and it will keep being more expensive - in general - for the next 4/5 months. Prices are expected to go back to normal in the fall, once supply catches up. So yeah, while you can predict general pricing, that doesn't mean you shouldn't buy a good deal when you find one.

A good deal is a good deal! :)
