T-Mobile's "Unlimited" Data Cap Is Now 30GB

I believe it's 2G/Edge in many areas. T-mo shutdown their 3G network in a lot of cities to make room for their 4G LTE upgrades.
Last month i was getting 7mbs download speed when i went over my 28GB's. I normally get inbetween 40-70mb's here in Dallas/Ft Worth.

Meanwhile in Australia... I have a 3GB data cap per month :D. If I pass it, I pay out the ass for every mb over. XD

Would love for GoogleFi to come out with a newer pricing structure where up to xData is at pricing and above that is at "unlimited" but you pay slightly more with no restrictions...

I don't really care - I barely use 1gig as it is.

Our telecoms would have advertised that as 30GB, and either state you will either not being able to download anything or download at very heavily throttled speed thereafter (the latter would probably still be "unlimited" by the definition in OP, but not here).

Here, "unlimited" translates to "no throttling under any circumstances besides being network conjested". I don't think we even have a "fair-use" clause.

Where are you at?

I guess even they can get something right and there's absolutely no reason why we can't do the same in US.

To be completely fair, we are a fairly small country and the uninhabited places are not that big in area.

I have only really lived in small island countries, so I can only imagine about living in physically big countries like US.

So what are you saying? There should be nothing keeping one person from monopolizing all the bandwidth in a heavy congested area with hundreds of people? Did you even bother to read what this cap is for, or did you just read the title like everyone else?

This cap has nothing to do with a data cap, rather it is a bandwidth cap in congested areas. Designed to keep one person from monopolizing all the bandwidth.

Did i say that ? Cause I don't see it anywhere.
I say make the companies focus on provide better product rather than being manipulative and try to get as close as possible to lying to the customer and get away with it.
if you need to cap it because of the sad infrastructure by todays standard, then fine do it. But don't try to sell it as something it is not by twisting words.

Its sad that this is still an issues in the states when 1st world countries don't have the issue anymore. Again the states are slowly getting further and further behind on technology, because companies select to take the easy way out instead of improving products.

T-Mobile Germany here. 6 GB high speed data, the the throttle. Which is ridiculously slow when you are throttled down. Luckily, I rarely use above 4 GB. My friend with his old data plan and family on the other hand, went over it all the time.

So stating facts is now splitting hairs with technicalities? Being ignorant is not a get out of jail free card.

Here lets look at it, what this entails, instead of reacting to click bait sensationalized title. This 30 GB cap only comes into play for high data users in highly congested and or high traffic areas. These areas alone will have slower speeds even without the cap and de-prioritizing your connection. For your everyday Joe this is going to be a non issue.

Actually it's not. You are getting unlimited data, just not all at LTE speeds. It's not anyone's fault but your own if you can't read.

People like the two of you are why telecoms continue to get away with this garbage. First you have bought into the bullshit that somehow 1 person can monopolize all the bandwidth and second neither of you understand what the word unlimited means. The other data industry that would be comparable to cell service is Satellite and they use the correct terminology. You get up to X gigs of "Priority" data after which you go on non priority data which is uncapped but may be reduced speeds depending on traffic. That sounds a world different than how Tmo, ATT and Verizon say it. The big difference is that it isn't intentionally deceptive and no one can read that sentence and think "Oh I get unlimited data" because you Don't.

Stop being sheep and defending deceptive advertising. Jesus I can't believe we have shills around here actually defending this garbage. Actually I can't believe I've finally been forced to use the word shill.

I'm with Boost and I get 4.5gb each month. I can still go over 4.5 but it's throttled back to 2g speed. So I've had unlimited data all this time?

sorry but if there ever is a day that i need more than 30gb of lte data on my phone then that is the day i need a new life. what would you be doing that you need that much data on a cell phone? fucking seriously.

640k of memory ought to be enough for everyone...I could continue posting hundreds of "Why would people ever need this much" types of quotes as technology has pushed forward if you still don't get how dumb that statement is. Either way it isn't really about why they need it so much as false advertising being a problem. Right at this point people don't "NEED" a 1Gig fiber connection in their homes, but that doesn't mean they should advertise it as an Unlimited 1gig connection then only give people 1gb speeds for the first 100megs of data then 50mb the rest of the month.

Mobile carriers are like children I can see it now, the next advertising campaign - 'our unlimited is more unlimiteder than their unlimited'

well then provide a scenario where you would need over 30 gigs of lte data on your phone?

Again irrelevant to the point that you missed, but ask and ye shall receive. I have numerous clients in the area I live who only have a Cell phone as a means of internet connection. They don't have Cable or DSL available, Dial-up isn't a viable option and due to tall trees Satellite has no line of sight. As such they are using a cell service hot spot so serve as the internet connection for their entire family. When you have 3+ people using a internet connection, 30gigs is nothing. Your problem is you assume the only way to use cellular data is for browsing on your personal phone and that for many people is just not the case.

ah the tired i need to use my cell phone for a in home internet connection. i was waiting for that.

Sorry you don't understand the fact that some people have no other option. But its ok, I'm sure they all actually Enjoy paying hundreds of dollars a month for heavily limited connections. So tell us what in your infinite wisdom you believe these people should do? Or do you not actually have any clue how other people have to live outside your precious little bubble?

Even if you don't have/don't like T-Mo, you got to be happy with their presence in the market pushing AT&T and Verizon to get more competitive.

Why does it make sense to pay for two services that do the same thing?

I hate that industries keep trying to change the definitions of words.

It is unlimited, but at times of congestion you're slowed down a little.
Imagine you're eating at red robin's, and they have unlimited bottomless fries. The waitress is the cell tower who delivers those fries.

You're sitting in a booth working on your laptop, and all day long you get full portions of fries, then dinner time hits.
The waitress still brings you your fries, though she brings about a third of the portion. She explains it's because of the dinner rush and once it slows down, you'll get your full portion again. They can only cook so many fries at once and they want to give the full portions to the new customers, rather than the guy who has been snacking on them ALL day.

Now, this only happens to the top 3% of the population of an area that is congested.
Not for a WHOLE city, but maybe a few blocks that a tower or two supports.

How is calling something "unlimited" but actually isn't unlimited not false advertising? Are we just so used to getting treated like shit by telecoms that we are willing to put up with it?

They will argue that they are advertising unlimited internet access not 4g LTE speeds.

I have T-Mobile, I tend to use about 50 to 60 GB a month. My speeds are stellar the whole time so unlike the other guys who force your speeds to a preset speed once you hit the cap. T-Mobile actually has something akin to what they state and at least for me it's pretty awesome.

Att here, throttling only applies during congestion. But keep bitching about things you don't understand

If people wouldn't spend every waking minute on their f-ing phones we wouldn't need to have caps. I'm often the only person in a room full of people that doesn't have their ass buried in a phone. It is stupid behavior to not be aware of stuff going on around you.

My data is essentially "unlimited" now, based in what is use my phone for. I have the regular 6GB per line plan with free audio/video streaming (Binge On). We have 6 lines now, but had 5 lines with Verizon. We were constantly blowing up the 10GB limit and paying overage fees, especially on months I travel. Since switching to TMO, not one line on our account has been over 1GB if usage, as the bulk of our data is streaming audio/video, which doesn't count.

My bill was $235 a month through Verizon, with government discount, for 5 lines. Now my bill ends up being $160 a month for 6 lines. On top of that, we finally have a signal at our house again, and coverage in a lot of places VZW had none.

Why people stay is Verizon is beyond me.

It's very clear in their commercials that heavy users only lose priority during heavy congestion.. this is completely fair/reasonable in my view.
