Apple Slams PCs in New iPad Pro Ad Campaign

You assume everything has 'an app for that' or a person doesn't need to do much of .. anything.

Have fun running spreadsheets, building powerpoint presentations, or even accomplishing more basic tasks such as writing a bullet background paper on iOS.

Square peg meet round hole.

Sure - My 91 year old grandmother's only computing device is an iPad. Works great. She reads some emails, does some basic text input, and browses the web. She doesn't use it for /work/.

Humor everyone and buy your kid going off to college nothing but an iPad. Let us know how it works out. Either way you/them have wasted money and now they need a device which can run a full blown OS regardless. They have shit to do. They can't waste hours fucking around with a sub-optimal Office solution to write their paper, and god forbid they need to access their online portion of the course work which in higher education is almost all Java (As in, full blown Java, not javascript) and Flash.

The iPad pro has a very good keyboard and a stylus just like a surface, you can install Office on it - I see no real evidence of square peg, round hole at all.

I prefer Android and my Nexus 9 replaces my laptop just fine, there's literally nothing I can do on my laptop that I can't do with more portability on my Nexus 9.

This is either a trolling attempt, or you truly believe that your limited workload means that a Nexus 9 and Android is good enough for everyone.

Either way your subjective experience does not fit into the objective reality being described here. It's fairly laughable that you would recommend Android as a platform to get work done on beyond the simple shit you're using it for, and frankly if you are doing shit - Like making powerpoint presentations, doing spreadsheets, viewing information while writing about it on the same device, etc; I pity you. The amount of time you are wasting by handicapping yourself is insane. I won't even go into all the shit your Android device can't actually do that professionals do, but I think you're smart enough to realize how inane that statement of yours was.

And none of this changes the fact that, once again, this thread is about Apple saying the iPad 'Pro' is the solution for professionals everywhere to get work done.

Between a word processor, spreadsheet, powerpoint, pdf viewer, web browser, email client, drop box etc. I cant think of anything that iPad cant do productivity wise aside from specialised applications like CAD, photoshop which i wouldnt touch on a surface either anyway.

I do most stuff on google apps now anyway in web based form

You're trolling at this point if your saying you'd rather do a BBP, or make a presentation on an iPad rather then a device running a normal OS. If you aren't the concept of 'time' must not matter to you. Minority Report that shit up and spend half a hour doing something a guy with a normal fucking OS could have done in 10 seconds.

A trolling attempt?

As stated. I can achieve anything I want to achieve on my laptop on my Nexus 9, as a result I rarely use the laptop anymore.

Lets see:

- Managing files, copying/pasting files, transferring files between devices using USB, unzipping files using RAR? No problem on the N9.
- Simple tasks like YouTube, Facebook, Sync for Reddit, Google +, Calendar, Google Earth, Street View, YouTube Studio, Facebook Pages Manager, Facebook Messenger, Ebay, Spotify, Soundcloud? No problem on the N9. (fitting the description you class as 'consumption').
- Streaming raw files over the network using a file manager and playing back under VLC? No problem on the N9.
- Office applications, connect a USB keyboard/mouse on the rare occurrence I need them? No problem on the N9.
- Multitasking, having more than one application open at a time? No problem on the N9.
- Watching media via USB under VLC? No problem on the N9.
- Check mail, browse the internet, use Flash? No problem on the N9, in fact I've got about 5 different browsers all installed as I'm working out which one I like best.
- Steam (mostly to chat with gamer friends), no problem on the N9.
- Emulation? No problem on the N9.
- Messaging via Hangouts? No problem on the N9.
- Remote desktop? No problem on the N9.
- Log in to a clients PC using Teamviewer? No problem on the N9.
- Open PDF's? No problem on the N9.
- Cast to a larger screen? No problem on the N9.
- Games? As assumed, no problem on the N9 - I can even play Half Life 2 using my PS3 controller via USB if I so desire.
- Terminal? No problem on the N9.
- Analyse a clients WiFi issues? No problem on the N9.
- Google search? As can be assumed the N9 is perfect for this.
- Hell, connect to a PETSCII based BBS using PETterm while sitting in bed? No problem on the N9.

Off the top of my head I can't think of a single additional task I need a mobile device for, and that includes a laptop.

And like he said because its good enough for you that now means its good enough for everyone?

You should probably read what was said before responding. Besides in all of your examples i see no work actually getting done (besides possibly your teamviewer example which itself is a load of horseshit. Nothing productive being done via teamviewer on a 9" screen.

Really? People don't perform the above tasks on computing devices? It's all just me? No work being performed?

Wow! Mindblown!

And Teamviewer? I don't find it works adequately on a 9" screen! Mindblown again! I love how well you can think for me, do you work for Microsoft?

I suppose everything you want to achieve on a computing device is what the masses use such products for since my examples count for nothing? And you think I'm trolling? At least I can come up with realistic examples as opposed to just some bullshit two line opinion.

Sure you CAN do it but you will be slow and inefficient, period. Teamviewer/splashtop whatever they all work like shit on a tablet, its doable but you spend more time navigating the screen trying to zoom in on or click something than anything else, nevermind if actual typing is involved. Flie managers? Again you CAN work with files if you dont mind double the time and effort to achieve what can be done on any laptop.

All but a couple things on your list are irrelevant. This is not about consumer use it is about professional use, if that is your actual workload then he is right. You are basing your opinions on a pretty limited workload and should really think about that.

But hey i dont agree with you so i must work for microsoft because that makes any sense at all given the context.

Also i assume you meant that you find teamviewer works adequately even though you said it dont work adequately. Either way its bullshit. For home use sure but for actual productivity use its FAR too inefficient.

I can connect a keyboard/mouse if I'm finding things a little slow and inefficient using the touch interface, I can even buy an official keyboard folio just like the Surface Pro if I want.

No, you're assuming things must be slow and inefficient as I'm not running a desktop OS on a touch device.

Do I want to do work in fucking teamviewer, or would I have been better off just taking a Surface or smaller laptop instead?

It's obvious what level of work he is doing. Anyone needing to actually get shit done would fuck around with a Nexus 9 and teamviewer a total of once and realize they should have bought a fucking laptop/surface.

Bulletdust - It's about using the right tool for the right job. You can hammer a nail with a wrench all you want, but at the end of the day i'll take the nailgun to put the shingles on. Thanks for the wrench though.

I don't find that at all, Teamviewer works just fine.

You know, I provided examples, you talk shit - Who's the troll here?

I talk shit because anyone doing the shit I described, and who would be considered a professional wouldn't be using teamviewer on a fucking Nexus (Or, again the point of this thread! An iPad) unless their laptop broke.

Yeah, well I'm tired of you. You've provided no realistic examples regarding the benefits of using an unsuitable desktop OS on a touch device unless I use it the same way I can use a $400.00 Acer laptop running Windows 10. So this discussion between yourself and myself is over.

I've made my point, I provided realistic examples and I stand by them. It's that simple.

You have limited time to make a powerpoint based off some various staff memo's and BBP's of varying file formats.

The company offered you a Surface Pro / Laptop to take home, but you tell everyone you'll use a Nexus.

Your productivity is shit compared to every other employee with the same skill level, period.

I think you missed the part where I stated that this discussion is over?

Why compete in shitty markets where making products out of plastic / cheap that detract from the brand name. They tried it with the 5c and it was a piece of shit.

Apple make premium products, using premium materials with seamless integration if you stay in their ecosystem, if you dont like it, go back to Windows and enjoy the advertising billboards.

Most Apple users are not brainwashed sheep, they just want simple devices that work and does 95% of what alternatives do. I couldn't give 2 shits if you can do more with a surface pro as opposed to an iPad Pro, I want a device that is instant on and off like a phone and doesn't run a bastardised desktop OS.

Biggest thing of all about the Apple ecosystem is you can upgrade devices with excellent resale value also, you aren't spending stupid money when you get 70% of it back when you go to upgrade anyway.

What are the resale values on those non-upgradable new Macbooks? I know the resale was great on the fully upgradeable Macbooks but it appears to be going downwards since Apple thought it better they go to landfill than get upgraded or fixed.

Higher than any Windows based laptop I guarantee you. I brought my old Macbook Retina (first of them) in 2012 for $1800 AUD as a base model. Sold it 4 years later for $950 and got a new one. Oh did I mention I could still do 4K video editing on it in realtime in FCPx also when it was 4yrs old...

The argument that you can use a mouse and keyboard on a surface is just bullshit really. If you need to use a keyboard and mouse / trackpad, use a dam laptop. They are simply superior for outright productivity and you can use it on your lap.

A tablet is a tablet, a laptop is a laptop. The surface is not both.

Microsoft bought N-trig. Good idea. Wacom is very good but not perfect. But it does seem like everyone wants to spin up their own pen tech. It's amazing how Microsoft is criticized for not accepting standards, then accepts every standard and then it's too complicated.

They have gotten better with standards the last year or two no argument there. Still MS is well known to only accept standards so they can "extend" the crap out of them and destroy said standard. The more things MS stays away from the better. My take on their current good citizen standard user moves comes down to ability to push. They have mostly lost their ability to completely ruin standards... as they no longer control the majority of computing devices. The best thing that can happen for consumers is for that to continue without anyone else ever getting the same sort of monopoly MS enjoyed for years while they where the only PC OS. As long as there is a good balance no one has the power to act like that anymore... and if everyone follows standards it shouldn't matter to much which os / hardware you favor.

It really makes you wonder WTF Apple is thinking. They are quickly making themselves irrelevant in the education market; A market they dominated back when I was going to school.

I think it really depends what you are studying. Apple has seen a large number of developers switch to Apple this year. They where the only OS to see growth in the software development market. I don't think its fair to say they have lost the education market. There is some more competition no doubt.

Apple resale is just going down period. Though its still higher than the competition and probably will be for a while. Jobs took the secret sauce with him its all downhill now.

Can you upgrade the Surface Pro line of devices?

No, but thats just one device in thousands of differing Windows based laptop/mobile devices. The non-upgradable law applies to ALL modern Macbooks.

I do hope that Apple dumps Ive and goes back to making proper laptops for people that actually need to do proper work on them.

Plenty of people use a Surface Pro in their laps just fine. Personally it doesn't work that well for me. A Surface Book on the other hand works very well in my lap.

A tablet is a tablet, a laptop is a laptop. The surface is not both.

Odd. I use my Surface devices as a laptop and as a tablet everyday.

Look; Everyone agrees Flash is a piece of shit.

That doesn't change the FACT that it is heavily used still on a lot of higher education online tools.

So go ahead and buy an iPad Pro to use as a student at College. Hope you still have a normal laptop, because you aren't going to be able to access your course material at many major public universities.

Right, you'd be amazed how behind-the-times most Universities and small offices can be. My college was still running pine email on a VAX system until the year 2000, which was about SEVERAL YEARS AFTER other places were going nuts with Sun gear, or Linux Xeon servers. No attachments (because nowhere near enough processing power and space).

Now, Flash filled the hole than nothing else was willing to, making Rich Web content possible. There are still many websites that require Flash, and still many institutions that have standardized on it. Good luck ignoring that.

Also, if the iPad Pro is so "professional," why can't I hook up multiple displays to it, like EVERY OTHER real computer?

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7502589?start=0&tstart=0

Cause the first thing I do when I need to be more efficient at work is add a second OR THIRD display! You'd think that would be important to image artists, right?

Too bad iOS wasn't DESIGNED to get work done, and had GUI multi-tasking bolted-on. But hey, Apple can hack-together a Surface knock-off with a better stylus, rather than do the real work and make System 1/Mac OS/OX X/MacOS/whatever the fuck you want to call it this week touch-capable.

The Surface DOES IT ALL. I know you find that hard to believe aokman, but just because Apple can't do it, doesn't mean it's impossible.

Most people here wouldn't even know what a VAX is, they're still struggling with the concept of something other than Microsoft.

Some here seem to be struggling with what 2 in 1s like Surface devices can do.

Not really, but your entitled to your opinion.

Doesn't change the fact that you can still achieve everything on a $400.00 Acer running Windows 10 as opposed to a $1500.00 Surface Pro. :)

I have no problem paying the $1000 I did for my wife's Surface Pro 3 over a 400 acer. The kickstand / typecover combo of the Surface is very functional and the build quality of the thing is nice as well. A $400 Acer is a flimsy plastic piece of shit.

This isn't true. Indeed these Apple ads highlight one feature of the iPad Pro found on Surface devices but not on that Acer laptop, digital ink. My recommendation when asked by potential Surface buyers is to not buy a Surface unless one intends to use it some significant percentage of the time as a tablet and/or with the pen.

Right, this whole fucking thread is because Apple thinks they have the ultimate laptop replacement for creatives, when we've shown several times over here that they don't have:

No Real multi-tasking
No Real application support, like Flash
No Multi-moniitor
No guarantee of compatibility with certain expansion devices, given the locked-down lightning port.

Cool your panties BulletDust, because CHOICE is yet-another feature Apple users have to live without. But you are free to choose your windows box and price point :D

The point is, in the Apple world, you get an overpriced tablet with a good stylus and keyboard attachment, or you can buy a real Apple PC, with 2x-4x the ram, but none-of-the-above. If you need both, you have no option buy to pay for both, and that is THE ONLY REASON why the Surface is such a good value.

Which i'd point out most professionals are moving away from Mac because of the insane costs these days. You can get a Dell w/ full @ home warranty service for a fraction of the cost.

Basically Apple is quickly moving away from the professional market as they making everything into consumption devices rather then creation devices.

The MacBook Pro's have always been expensive, but I thought there were some benefits to the "higher" costs at the time. When I got mine in 2013, there was no other laptop with the battery life, specs or build quality and the trackpads on Windows devices were pretty bad back then. But when I saw the new MacBook Pro's I just laughed. The gimmicky touchbar, shitty port selection, average specs at best and ridiculous price just makes me wonder who would buy it. If I wanted a MBP right now I would just get the previous model 15" with a dedicated GPU.

Not entirely, Apple knows they have their hardcore users by-the-balls, which is why they raised the price of the MacBook Pro. Some left, but the vast majority sucked-it-up.

How did I know you'd mention ink!

So for an additional $1100.00 you can scribble on the screen.

...Or, you could just use the keyboard.

Gimmicky active tiles on the start bar, mishmash of touch and desktop interface while the desktop interface seems to be getting dumbed down more and more with each uncontrollable Windows update. Built in spyware and targeted advertising....I also have a chuckle when I look at Windows 10.

However I do agree, the latest MBP is a disappointment.

That's what's odd about these ads, they taut features of the iPad Pro, specifically ink in Word for instance that's been on Windows devices for 15 years and is actually more powerful on Windows devices as you can ran full Office on them. And if you don't need full Office you can run the mobile version like the iPad Pro.

I used Ink 15 years ago Heatlesssun, you know this as we've discussed it before. 15 years ago it was rubbish so I'm not too sure why you keep bringing this point up?
