I've noticed that on Ebay and here on Hardforum that used X1 Carbons and t440/450s of the same generation go for about the same price. Which is kind of odd, since Carbons are much more expensive new. Why do the Carbons depreciate faster than the t440/50s?

I'm asking b/c I'm in the market for one. I don't really care about the slight difference in portability, I just want to get the IPS screen. But I'm worried that maybe the Carbon is less reliable/durable given the depreciation curve. Markets are rational, aren't they ;)

(I'm typing this on a 10-yr old t60p, so I have high expectations for my new/used thinkpad.)

A lot of sellers here are just like any other person trying to minimize their loss when reselling an item. The main difference here is that you're more likely to "bargain" with a user here through PM instead of the hassle on the bay.

I just hate the people that make up some sad sack story to make a sale and in all caps "MY LOSS IS YOUR GAIN" crap, and still charge retail price for it, even when it is in stock almost everywhere. It reminds me of those clowns trying to sell "golden chip" original GTX titans for like $1200 when the 3rd generation of titans already released for a lower price. I was happy knowing they never sold it.

We had about a half dozen lenovo carbons at my work and they sucked, in fact i dont think we have any left in deployment (lots of issues) -- but still have bunches of T400/T500s. We switched from lenovo to HP right when the T440s came out so i cant comment on Carbon vs T440 -- but our T400-430s all were rock solid. I would assume the T440 is more reliable then a carbon

Yes, this is my suspicion...

The carbons are also a lot harder to upgrade / tweak. The T series is a much more conventional business laptop chasis.

Having owned both, I had no issues with the carbon and loved the form factor. But to each his own.
