The 2015 Sony TV Thread

I heard in other thread that you plan to buy 55'' x810c. Do you plan use it as media screen or regular PC usage screen? Do you have info how far you must sit using that bad boy as computer screen?

I plan to use it as a TV and for playing PC games. Since it's a 55" TV your head will need to be at least minimum 3 feet from the TV.

I have a 40" 4K Philips PC monitor and I am 2 feet from it.

Has anyone updated their UK X830 to FW v2645 released 14-12-2015?

I use my TV for programming work and thus am reluctant to update it without knowing wether it will adversely affect things.

Have you tried it yourself? How were the results?

I just bought a 49X830C (US) during Amazon Prime Day (from Amazon Warehouse, brand new, unopened, $632 with discounts). The TV updated to the latest firmware automatically (PKG3.473.0107NAB 7/06/2016). I use this TV exclusively as a monitor and the only issues I've noted in the few days I've used it are one single random reboot of Android (the same as been happening on my Nexus phone), and a few times where the action menu button on the remote failed to activate the on-screen display.

Since then I've disconnected the TV from the network and turned off the sending of privacy data. So far I haven't seen any more problems.

I gotta say I really love this as a monitor. The IPS colors really pop out and the lag is far better than the Silo I had been using, plus with the larger size I have much less eyestrain.

Have there been any more software updates for the 830C? What's the current status of 120 Hz at 1080p? Working, not working, still working but with artifacts?

There's a firmware update to Android 6, but you'll probably have to download it and extract it to a USB stick to install (at least that's what I had to do -- auto-update seemed to think the old firmware was current). 1920x1080@120Hz still works, still has artifacts, and exhibits less artifacts with reduced timings, same as before.

Thanks for the info! I thought I had read somewhere that 120 Hz stopped working (or was disabled) in one of the firmware updates but I can't remember now if that was for the US or EU models, or if Sony re-introduced it in a later update. Rtings showed it as being supported, but I wanted to make sure since this set doesn't get talked about that much anymore (on here anyway, I haven't checked AVS Forum).

I really want an OLED for my main monitor, but I really wish they'd make something smaller than 55". 43" is just about perfect IMO and I like the fact that the X830C is IPS, doesn't use PWM, and supports 120 Hz - most say the artifacting isn't that big of a deal or that noticeable. I've yet to see it in person, so hopefully it wouldn't bother me. I'm really tempted to pick one of these up to compare to my Samsung JS9000 48" SUHD as I know they each have pros and cons.
