Smartwatch Powered By Body Heat

Neat idea, if it does work I'd be interested in the final product. But I remain skeptical and won't be funding this. I'd rather pay a premium on the finished product.

Thermoelectric powered devices aren't new, though this is pretty neat. The idea is one side needs to be hot, and the other side has to be cold. Hence why they said it works better in cooler weather. Also if you put power in this device, one side gets hot and the other side gets cold. This is what you'll find in those small wine coolers.

I can see this working ok. A standard watch battery lasts what.. 5-7 years before it needs replacing. And that is with the hands moving.

This looks to use something similar to e-ink for the display which uses very little energy.

And with newer electronics using way less power than they used to, it does seem possible.

For the amount of power a watch like this would use, I can see a tec being able to harvest enough power for it to work.

They already have working units. It is not like they only have an idea.

They do say it works better in cooler temperatures which makes sense. Something like this is not going to work that well in areas where the temperature is usually hot.

However, if you keep it on all the time, it should be able to keep a charge while you are out an about and then charge up when you are in an air conditioned area.

They could be going after a really small sterling engine too. Although to be honest, inertia powered self winding watches are much more power efficient in terms of space requirements.

Hope it's good because I backed it. I'm willing to risk the $99 for their initial backing price because I like the idea of the body heat powered watch a lot. I am not generally fond of smart watches at all mainly because I want my watches to run whenever I wear it without having to charge it daily. Wind it so it can be used immediately in a few seconds or have a battery that lasts a few years and I am fine with it, but the daily x hours min to charge or it's useless is a deal breaker for me.

If this really does turn out to work well, I'll be buying one too.

I backed it. If it fails, then I get a refund on my CC statement.

As cyclone3d pointed out, it looks like it is using some sort of E-ink display, given how every shot shows a black watch face. That is bound to keep the power consumption down. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if it was backed up by some sort of kinetic charging. Neat idea though.
