Ghost In The Shell Official Trailer

Usually live action films based on anime do not impress me at all, but this one did.

She is a beautiful woman, but I really don't like the costume (OK, most likely CGI generated). Yes she is a woman, yes she is beautiful, but no, I don't need to see every computer generated curve of an unrealistic CGI body.

This is the kind of stuff that just gives the feminists the excuse they need are looking for to throw shit at us guys.

The trailer looked good and Johansson is a good actress and can probably pull off the role well, but it still felt really off. Like the Assassin's Creed trailers, the music choice for this trailer just doesn't work for me. When I think of GITS Kenji Kawai's amazing score always accompanies the memories of the movie, either that or my mind goes to SAC and Yoko Kanno's music for that series. With the music choice for the trailer it makes it all feel hollow and lifeless.

The Major is supposed to look like that.

Based on what I see in the trailer, I do not approve. It just doesn't fit.

The Major is supposed to look like that.

SAC she was even more exposed, although they toned it down a lot for 2nd GIG. Never watched the movies, I should at some point.

Opening is faithful to the original and even uses the original score. The soundtrack is also being composed by Clint Mansell, so at least one good thing is guaranteed to come out of this production.

Looks good, I can see SJ as Major now.The choice for Batou is kind of meh. The music their choosing doesn't fit. It might if I never knew what GITS was but it throws everything off for me.

Thanks for the info. I have not actually seen the original!

I just feel her costume is going to just make this movie a symbol of feminist hate. I would totally love to see Scarlett actually dressed like that, but I can tell it's totally CGI, so if they felt the need to do that, then they should have made her a little more "dressed" looking... YMMV

I think the actually hit it pretty close considering real movie vs animation. you can clearly see who they are supposed to be. lots of scenes taken directly from the anime is in my book a huge things of it being done well. so its not just a total reboot/alternative story or blah blah

then the anime should be doing that

Yes this movie looks to be fantastic. They lifted a lot of scenes straight from the anime which I think is a good thing, proves they are familiar with what they are making and not just some random director tasked with making some pocket change for the studios while adding another film to his resume so he can finally start directing stuff he really wants to do.

Aside from the fact that it's how it was in the source material, the entire point was that the optical camouflage is built into her body, and thus needs to ditch the clothes to be able to use it. Additionally, because it's a robot body, there's really no "gender"(no genitals) except for an overall shape to maintain an outward appearance that is normal(hence looking like a barbie doll).

As far as the feminists go... they need to be ignored. It's tiring seeing them complain about everything, and you know damned well that even if she were clothed they'd complain that she wasn't another 50 pounds heavier(ignoring that the robot body itself weighs quite a lot). Even though the trailer doesn't look particularly interesting, it's good that people aren't so damned afraid of feminists complaining that they're willing to actually stick to the source material(this is not the same as Quiet from MGS V that had a lame excuse for being scantily clad).

It's a case of 'how much do we follow the original?' The scene where she drops off the building (if I remember after all this time) they imply that the optical camo has to be tight- it can't flap around... As she turned to fall she should have turned invisible... Also worth noting, nothing seen on the outside is human. Since childhood she has lived as a brain in a cyborg body, and she's had a bunch of bodies. It will be interesting to see how much this translates to the film.

Oh- and agree I'm not feelin' Batou at all.

Ha! Ninja'd by Merc

So many actions scenes in the trailer from the original, but it seems like they are taking a different twist on the actual storyline. WHich makes me very happy. The original is a story already told. Time for a new one.
That said, I think SJ is going to be a great Major. This was a character that was always rather deadpan (excepting the silly manga chibi and goofiness scenes) and cold. Which SJ can do very well (Lost in Translation). The visuals look fantastic as well. I'm just hoping we get those cool 4-legged mechas, the Tachikoma, from the manga. Their filler conversations are a favorite of the manga for me.

If this works, as a movie, here's hoping we get some Appleseed!

I've never seen the originals, but this looked pretty badass. My only hope is that it's rated R and not watered down just for PG-13 sales!

It might actually be a good movie, but I get the same feeling that comic book fans get when their fandom is violated...

Surprisingly, this actually looks pretty cool. Music was bad though. In the manga, the Major actually behaves like a normal person, not like the inanimate doll in the movies. In the show she has more personality, especially in the second season.

Needed to be asian actors. I mean come the fuck on... And does she have to be practically naked for every fight?

Scarlett Johansson isn't even Japnese she is still a looker though.....
She doesn't have to be Japanese, that's not important, but she should have a East-asian appearance (Chinese/Korean/etc actress would have been fine too). Otherwise, it implies that the Major's character, a young Japanese girl Motoko Kusanagi, specifically chose a white woman as a more aesthetically pleasing form, which is a message that I don't think is appropriate, and I'm no SJW.

Asians usually aren't as sensitive about that thing, but imagine for example if the character were a black Nigerian girl, and we change cannon to say that she chose a caucasian body because it was prettier. Not cool.

Katana from Suicide Squad, Karen Fukuhara, with her voice more similar to what those that have watched the GITS anime have come to expect from the character, would have been a much better choice.

Also, having an artificial body, the Major will never age, and Karen being only 24 years old and asian means that if they were to turn this into a proper franchise, that they could maintain the illusion of not aging for many sequel movies.

Scarlett not being Japanese doesn't bother me but her voice just doesn't line up to that sharp command bark and take charge that I'm used to. (I may get used to it eventually) Also I'm wondering if the movie will have the voice over conversations where they are speaking silently through their links.

They appear to be handling the cyborg nudity part ok, as long as they avoid those risqué camera angles shots emphasis on her figure squished between action shots.

Her body is a cybernetic body.

I can't say I'm excited being honest. I dislike all the casting and live action rarely if ever translates Anime/games. I'll give it a shot once it hits Redbox so the worst case is it only costs me $2.50. I have Watched GiTS more times than I can count. I'm going to be extremely critical of this.

I disagree, and think its lame they went PG-13 on this. Yes, its not meant to be her skin, but rather a skin-tight cloak suit, but it should have been form fitting material and still shown nipple shape for example. <- quasi-NSFW

Here you can also see her cloak suit tearing, showing it was a very thin elastic fabric. <-quasi-NSFW

So she didn't even have to be full nude, just basically "wet t-shirt contest" levels of sexiness, and GITS has always been liberal with fanservice as a franchise.

I fear this is going to be another Aeon Flux or Lucy 2.0, and become more of an all action little plot feminist wish-fulfillment movie than the typically male-pleasing sci-fi slow burner it has always been. I thought after Ghostbusters we were done with this, and there are plenty of "girl power" flicks already out there for that niche like Lucy, Hunger Games, Mad Max (aka Furiosa Max), etc.

very impressive from a visual standpoint...looks like something the Wachowski's (The Matrix) would direct...

This actually looks better than I expected. I saw the original ages ago in the nineties. And it really blew me away.
I'm going to leave this here just for reference:

I think they've done a pretty good job with the look. And I don't see why do you need to hang up on nipples not being visible. That's not exactly a very high ranked thing among the things that will make or break this movie.

looks good, matrix like seq, im in, in the future everything advances except guns, the guns stay the same. so right now were sorta like peak gun...

If anything I'll probably see it just for Takeshi Kitano

The rest of the movie very much has this vibe to it (comparing it to other movies that is)

Does it also need to be asian dialogue too? I mean if you're such a purist lets just subtitle the whole film. Lets also have Asian directors, producers, fuck it make the whole thing in Japan right? Jesus fucking christ you people. This is an American remade film that needs to appeal to Americans. They arent going to cast Michelle Yeoh or some other shitbird terrible asian actress just to maintain some credibility with a bunch of anime nerds. SJ is a great casting for this film and so far everything looks to be done right given that this is a high budget Americanized action film.

I disagree, and think its lame they went PG-13 on this.

The film has not yet been rated, and judging from the first attack scene where you can see squib shots and blood packs bursting from the bodies of the guys she is shooting and the scene where Kitano shoots a guy in the head and the body vividly jolts from impact I'd venture to say this will probably be rated R. In fact to be honest the movie has such a tone and style to it that I would certainly think it will be rated R, looks to be very adult oriented.

Just watched it again... looks PG-13 to me by todays standards.

Remember, Robocop remake, the Expendables 3, World War Z, and Dark Knight were all PG-13.

They don't seem to mind gun violence lately, but sex is different, and the lack of nipples tells me PG-13... if it really is Rated-R, then that certainly raises the bar so I hope you're right. After all, the anime has always been quite risque with crazy violence and even controversial sexual stuff, like the shota scene where they pretty much imply that Major is getting it on with an underage boy and at one point when she's laying in bed naked with him (after being practically nude the whole time prior) he even starts asking her if she has sex with her prosthetic body, and she totally calls his bluff and is like "Would you like to find out"?

That could mean that the lesbian sex scene hinted at in the trailer could have her showing off e-sex, which the Major already has experience with. That's where you basically "hack" into each other's bodies and can experience each other's pleasure simultaneously, but it only works with the same sex as they have the same body parts. If different genders tried to do it with heterosexual e-sex, apparently it causes brain damage.
