I don't think I'm the right guy to ask about that. 60Hz doesn't cause me any grief. I think I can detect the 144Hz Acer and the 75Hz HP are a bit smoother than the 60Hz Dell --- but that's not really a big enough deal to my eyes to make it a deciding factor. I attend LAN parties pretty regularly and have seen all manner of display setups before. The Dell 3014 has ALWAYS been my favorite display I've seen. This Omen is right up there with the Dell's quality in my initial impressions. I've never felt the draw some of the guys say they have to the 144Hz displays. I've played on several of them now and I just don't think I can notice too much difference above 60hz. (maybe a weeee bit, maybeee). I'm more about the quality of the picture, blacks, contrast, colors, than the refresh speed, and the Omen looks REALLY good.

Please post reviews. I currently have a first Gen 27inch 60HZ 1440P IPS Korea Monitor. Nothing wrong with it and I have the version with a scaler but I would love to try freesync. I hate screen tearing.

In your case look into the Pixio PX277 from Amazon. $389, 27", 1440p, "IPS," FreeSync. Should meet your needs.

Why the Pixio? That cost more than this HP, is significantly smaller, and I'd wager, a worse monitor? With the HP he has the ability for free returns, and a no fully dead pixel policy

I'm comparing these monitors and the this Omen is right up there with a Dell 3014. The Dell 3014 is a top shelf $1400 at release unit.

On this omen I have no dead pixels, no stuck pixels, and no backlight bleed at all. Unless I got lucky - these are AAA panels on these Omens - - - which make sense to a degree since HP has three 32" monitors and this is their best/gaming line - one might assume they binned the panels to put the best panels in their premier gaming Omen line. I'd have to assume it's the lottery with the Pixio Korean monitor which typically use B panels. I seriously doubt I'd be thinking a Korean IPS would be on par with my Dell 3014. I know the Korean monitor I had sure wasn't. The Auria from microcenter I purchased on that Korean IPS bandwagon at the time was saturated colors, to a degree that was off to me subjectively. I also found the text natively too small at 2560x1440 at 27". It was a decent monitor for the price at the time, but the Dell 3014 is significantly superior. I suppose the Korean monitors have probably improved right along with the other brands --- so maybe it's all on parity now - but still --- at casual thought it seems like more of a gamble, for a smaller monitor, at more cost.

You're focused too much on what works best for YOU and ignoring why I recommended an item for HIM.

He has a 27", 1440p, 144hz, IPS and doesn't imply any issue with that other than wanting FreeSync. The monitor that I recommended him is 27", 1440p, 144hz, "IPS", and adds FreeSync. It checks all his implied boxes. The HP Omen/Pavilion 32/Envy 32 are great if you want to raise your size, switch to VA, etc. He didn't imply that in the post that I replied to.

The reason that we have so much variety in monitors is that not everyone likes the same thing. You're falling into the trap of thinking that because this monitor is great for you, everyone else should get it too. Heck, I love MY monitor (LG 27UD68), but I realize that it's not for everyone.

to be fair I have a 1440P IPS 60Hz.

to be fair I have a 1440P IPS 60Hz.

I stand corrected.

Look into the Pixio if you want
  • same size
  • similar IPS-like (it's actually AHVA, like all the 144hz "IPS" panels)
  • increase in visual quality
  • increased refresh rate
  • FreeSync support

Look into the HP if you want
  • larger screen size
  • switch from IPS to VA (neither is better, both have pros and cons)
  • increase in visual quality
  • slightly increased refresh rate
  • FreeSync support
So it's 32" vs. 27", VA vs. "IPS,", and 75hz vs. 144hz. Those are the key distinctions. Neither is better as it's going to come down to your personal preference.

Initial impressions video up on the HP Omen 32". I'll post a three way comparison video in the next few days.

Hey Archaea,
thanks for this first impressions video.

I would like to know how the contrast is, since I have a 24" VA Benq with 3700:1 at 100cd/m2.
I know that other VA 32" monitors don't go above 2600:1 so I hope this HP is better in that area.

is this screen glossy or matted ?
Could you take a photo of the monitor(power off) in daylight ?

This comes down to increased size and more importantly, CONTRAST and black levels vs increased refresh rate. Personally I'd go with size and contrast, because after having an ips achieva shimian 1440p monitor for several years I got tired of the terrible black levels in a dark room. Viewing angles are better on the ips of the pixio but it does not matter on a monitor for regular use as you are literally in front of the hp so the lesser viewing angles are not an issue.

The ONLY thing the pixio has going for it is the refresh rates being higher. I'd say the OMEN wins overall, but if someone is laser focused on refresh rates over contrast ratio and black levels, then they have their choice.

All current displays force clear compromises, so you have to choose what you prefer.

Definitely Matte.

It seems approximately the same reflectivity and anti glare coating as the Dell 3014.

Contrast is labeled as 3000:1

Contrast is subjectively better than Dell 3014 (which has no backlight bleed, but the typical IPS glow), and better than the specific sample I had of the Acer zx350cu which has, IMO, pretty inexcusable backlight bleed.

Mine came in this morning. I noticed that getting the stand into mine it was a bit of a snug fit. One weird thing I noticed so far is when I adjust the tilt back then bring it forward again there is a sound like peeling a sticker off coming from somewhere I can't figure out. Do you notice this on yours Archaea?

Almost every VA panel is labeled as 3000:1, but unfortunately no 32" VA monitor can reach that value. I hope this Omen is an exeption.

I don't have that issue. I'd pop the stand back out, and make sure it went in correctly. There is a little plastic release to push.

Yeah I just took the stand back off and checked it. Seems to be the foil tape or adhesive on the panel making the noise when the panel flexes during adjustment.

How does your panel look? Backlight bleed? Colors?

My panel really looks pretty good to me. I don't have much if any BLB and colors look comparable to my Dell 2209wa which is an IPS. Unfortunately I do seem to notice more eye strain already compared to my Dell. I have turned the brightness down but I am wondering if maybe the monitor is just plain too big for me.

I don't think anyone has been able to confirm or deny what type of backlight dimming it uses. I ran the blur busters test but I don't know how to interpret it. I see a line about 4 pixels wide moving across the screen when I do the test using the default setting. I can't see 4 individual lines. Does the mean I am seeing blur or high frequency PWM?

You'll probably get used to the larger size. Move the monitor back as far as possible and give it a few days. I've used mine for about six hours now and no issues with that whatsoever but I'm also used to the 30" Dell for the last couple years. I do remember going to a bigger display and feeling a bit off. The 35" curved does that to me a wee bit.

Yeah I am going to take your suggestion and see how it goes. Hopefully it's just me needing to adjust to the size and not because of anything with the panel such as the possible PWM backlight. I played some TF2 and I haven't been able to notice any input lag.

I just tried doing this test details here Pulse Width Modulation. I used 1/25 shutter speed and set my white balance to daylight which I think is 6000k. Took pictures from about 2 feet away while moving horizontally and different speeds and I only get a solid white line. Tried at 100% brightness as well as 70% and 0%. I don't know if anyone else wants to attempt this. Let me know your results if you do.

I wish it was Gsync. I had an Asus Swift last year that I loved. I have a 1080p right now and it's killing me not having a large 1440p. I don't know if the refresh rate really matters to me. The Swift was bad ass though. With the 20% back with a master card this seems pretty good.

Man. I'm thinking about holding out for black Friday and getting a deal on something bad ass like an x34. But for under $300 maybe I have to just pull the trigger here and go AMD next gen.

I think when I first switched my resolution from 1680x1050 to 2560x1440 something didn't quite take all the way. Text wasn't quite as sharp as I thought it should be. After I did a restart things looked much better. I have had 3 Nec 20wmgx2 a Dell 2209wa the Acer XB271HU and some other lesser VA and IPS monitors and so far I would say the IQ on this thing tops them all. I do think I am going to exchange mine between my issues with the stand not wanting to go in all the way and the weird sound it makes when adjusting tilt I have now also noticed the top button for the osd sticks a little. I am going to use it over the weekend and probably send it for exchange on monday. I do want to weigh the monitor + vesa plate to try and figure out what monitor arm is going to work for this before I send it back.

Sure I will get a picture of it for you guys. Might not be until tomorrow though.

It's worth noting I just figured out you can customize the setting from the quickview gaming without losing free sync. The little banner appears at the top left of the screen and tells you when free sync goes off. Changing a few minor settings like brightness, etc don't turn off free sync.

I dont know if anyone would care BUT, I game on 3 Samsung 32" UN32J5205 Smart TV's, they cost but $229 at Best Buy and look fantastic compared to my old LG 29" Ultrawide 2560x1080P monitor. Yes they are 1080P but the colors are vibrant, text is crisp and clear, and gaming is freaking fantastic and smooth, where I can make out details on the ground, grass, and banners and they wizz by in racing games, case in point, you can see the fence clear as day in the 2nd pic in the right monitor through the door, its not fuzzy in any way, where it would of been on my LG. Just a thought, and option, for with just 1 GTX 1070 it will play even DOOM 4 at over 30 fps at 5760x1080P and Ive seen no slow down in anything else Ive thrown at it yet at that rez, with ALL the eye candy turned to ultra or max. You can get 3 of these and have change left over at the price of 2 in the OP. Just saying ;)

AND YES I KNOW MY DESK IS A MESS!!!!

So this won't do 75hz unless you have AMD for freesync?

incorrect.

It does do 75Hz without free sync. I apologize for the confusion if I caused such.
75hz is selectable from the windows display adapter settings with freesync disabled. I just verified on my machine.

I turned off freesync using HP Enhance quikview mode (monitor overlays a splashscreen that confirms it is off with that change), then verified it was still set to 75hz in the Windows Display adapter control panel, and verified again on the monitors information GUI menu.

Sold me on it. A solid 1440p 75hz panel for $300 out the door is pretty incredible I think.

Anyone recommend a good dual monitor mount? I'll be using this 32" Omen and an Acer H236HL.

I have an older 30 inch 1600p HP IPS monitor. How would this compare?

Can you say the exact LG 21:9 you had?

I have an older 30 inch 1600p HP IPS monitor. How would this compare?

I'd assume that HP 1600p is similar to my Dell 3014.

Positives on Omen = freesync and 75hz, slightly better contrast.

Positives on 30" ips, slightly better resolution with more pixel height.

If you have a current AMD i'd recommend this Omen and you can sell the HP 30" for what you paid. Free sync is indeed nice for gaming. I've seen no tearing with this monitor since install. If you don't game or if you are pleased with the 30" then don't change. Quality between my Dell 3014 and the Omen is very similar to my subjective eye. (Which is a big positive for the Omen, because the Dell is a reference monitor that I've not seen its equal previously).

Anybody get one of these yet? I have a gtx 1070, and this size wise seems perfect. Not sure how it would do for the gaming.
