Unlimited Usenet/Newsgroup Access - $7.99 / month

Old timer here and I'm actually thinking about either dumping NewsLeecher or finding a new provider. Have you ever used NewsLeecher UseNet2Go, or GigaNews, and if so, are you able to say how this service compares? I can max out my 150Mb connection with the NewsLeecher service, but they seem to have a problem with completion/retention lately.

It's a reseller service on the Highwinds network. You will have no issues maxing out 150mb through this. I think all of those that you listed are also on the same network except giga.

Doesn't seem to bad on the surface, may have to check 'em out at some point. I typically just use the UsenetServer $3/3 day unlimited plan if I need to get caught up on something and they have a solid 2900+ days of retention (at least in my experience of grabbing some stuff that far back with 100% completion). Always nice to see Usenet still surviving, but I have to wonder just how hard DMCA takedowns will be with this provider considering they're using Highwinds as a source.

Also: this provider literally appeared out of thin air within the past day or two, as announced at Reddit:

so... ;)

Considering the majority of providers are under highwinds, you have days to get your fill of the popular stuff asap. But it is 8 bucks so.... I have a 5 buck a month unlimited on thundernews, its fast but you do have to get stuff asap, so use a tracker app on your phone etc.

In my experience with usenetserver, anything 2012 or later is gone if it's remotely popular, before then it is hit or miss. DMCA takedowns affect everyone except the tiniest of providers with like 10 days retention.

How does this compare to UsenetBucket (XSNews reseller IIRC)... I've been using UsenetBucket for a year or so now, and Tweaknews before that...

I'm really surprised people still post on newsgroups. Talk about bringing back memories...

Newsgroup ninja is using highwinds media (can be seen from traceroute) as the backend. The retention is more than double that of UsenetBucket and the price is almost half for the unlimited plans.

It actually ended up being a few bucks more for me because I normally got the 'Comfort Bucket' from UB, it was unlimited except for a 40Mb/s speed cap. But if Highwinds is easier on DMCA takedowns than XSNews we might have a winner.... I guess I'll find out because I just signed up. :p

I guarantee you 100% of the people [H]ere don't POST on newsgroups.

I haven't posted in a newsgroup of any sort since 1996, and maybe even further back than that...

Highwinds = crap

I prefer the more obscure Usenet providers even with low retention times. Sickbeard and couchpotato solve retention issues.

I still post actual messages to a few obscure comp.sci groups, have done for for 20+ years. Some of those old timers (like myself) just won't use anything else to communicate so, that's what's required like it or not.

Posting isn't why I went to newsgroups.I assume Bin newsgroups are still a thing? I should look into it again...

ROFL.... yes, that's what this whole thread is basically about. ;)

I wish we had things like .NZB files and binaries indexers back in the mid 1990s.... Nope, back then we would poll a group for headers, wait forever for just the HEADERS to download, then sort through and tag the segments we needed by hand. I even remember DECODING binaries one at a time over a shell account in the mid 90s...

Damn I'm old....

Nowadays if you try and download a complete list of headers for a popular binaries newsgroup your client would sit for hours and eventually run out of memory and choke.... on just the headers!

don't forget the PAR files for when a part went missing on your server! :D

Although that was a bit later.

Yeah, PARchives and PAR2 came about fairly late in the scene. Before that we just had to rely on .SFV files (which were basically just checksums the files could be verified against). If the SFV verification didn't match you were stuck downloading an entire file all over again. :D

Anyone use Free Agent back in the 90s?

It worked ok for its time.

I don't know how anyone could still use them to communicate. Impossible to find anything. At least there are some web front ends for discussions. It was like trying to communicate on Craigslist.

I remember xmodem, zmodem and Kermit. Back when WWIII, Wildcat and xbbs was where people would roam. Remember AT commands? ATH0

I'm curious about nntp now, about it's current state, gonna go check it out. What client would you guys recommend?

You forgot the '+++', you gotta grab the modem's attention first before sending it commands! :D

As for a client... well, if you're going to use it for grabbing binaries then 'Grabit' is the go-to free software of choice, or NewsBin Pro if you want a better (but costly) piece of software. If you're actually going to read text articles then hell, I dunno, I'd look for a copy of Forte' Agent or just use Google Groups.

get a seedbox and then use any site you want for the same price and be done with it :D

It's 20 bucks man, not exactly costly for a lifetime license for the best binary downloader.

Well I could SWEAR it used to be $59.99 for a license, but then again the last time I checked was probably 8 or 10 YEARS ago, lol. :D

Newsbin Pro has never been that expensive, top price was $39.95 iirc (what I paid for it and never ever regretted it for one second) but recently they even gave away free keys to people. I purchased it way back in 2005 (using the info from the woman that ended up being my wife, she put it on her credit card and I paid her back) and I took advantage of grabbing a free key so I could finally get it in my actual name. Still use it to this day as I noted in another Usenet related thread, still the best piece of software for Usenet in my opinion and I still like going through headers manually sometimes just to see what's out there.

While I can't say if this particular offer is still valid it can't hurt to check on it (it's not how I got mine free which was from another offer from the member forums - you have to be a registered purchaser to gain access, at least back then but not sure about it now):

Newsbin Free Key Request for Redditors

Personally I say pay for it, Newsbin Pro is truly worth the cost - which honestly cannot be said about most software overall - and it just keeps getting better all the time.

Also, you only need one key per ip, as it seems they allow multiple installations. I've not had an issue having it installed on my server and 24-7 rig. Running either or as needed for years. Buy it as it ensures we all get the upkeep and they do maintain the app religiously.

I paid for it back in the day. No regrets.

Back in the day, I used newsgroups. But since the DMCA takedowns are so quick, there's just no point. Unless there's some indexer out there that notifies you immediately. Maybe then it might be worth it.

Same here. I download hundreds of gigs week and stopped using newsgroups years ago, just not worth it.

There's lots of indexers that have api support. I use giganews as my host and have pretty much 100% completion for everything I've ever been after. I use sonarr on a synology and I do certain "linux iso's" by hand with another indexer I like. No issues at all.

ive got a ipvr box built for that sort of thing. works like a charm. sonarr couchpotato and sab with api access. emby for streaming and pushbullet to notify me every completed "linux iso and floppy" fast and automated

But if you need an "outdated linux ISO" those can be problematic to get fully completed.

I mostly use for live tv shows so i sont need cable. OTA for live stuff and slingtv for a basic set channels. Couch potato plus sick beard gets me all the content i need

I used it for over 10 years, but quit Giganews about 3 years ago due to the hassles with getting bogus files that were probably planted by the DMCA or some other group. I used Newsleecher, but they now charge for it. Lucky for me that I purchased a license before they changed their software to pay as you go.

So I am assuming this is for content of the video and audio persuasion? Is it just links to torrents or do people put links to Mega? Or are you actually exchanging data between users?

I have wondered how this system actually works.

this is not like torrents in the sense that your share or can upload parts ofnthe data to others. You connect to server(s) hosted by these providers who often just resell access to the same servers from the main players. You use nbz files like torrent files which tells your downloader what pecices to get from the server. There are sites which just provide access to these nbz files very much like the torrent sites did/do.
