Need router help and recommendation

I'll probably be switching to WOW! cable internet soon. I haven't kept up with routers at all. I was looking to get the SB6190 modem. Newegg currently has a combo deal with the ASUS RT-N66R which I can't find too many reviews on.

I'm mostly concerned only with providing wired access for a few computers. I'm not too concerned about Wi-Fi today and only turn it on once in a while as needed. I would say I'm mostly concerned with it being secure. However, I could see perhaps wanting to mess with wireless security cameras down the line. What sort of things should I look for in the router?

Are there any brands that are recommended with regards to providing long lasting support? It seems like new routers are coming out frequently due to all of the wireless tech. Are there any companies that stand out amongst the others with regards to keeping older hardware secure?

Also, I willl need to upgrade my ethernet cables. Are cheaper solutions good enough such as cables from Monoprice?

build your own router and install pfsense on it. Use the ASUS RT N66R as a Wifi access point. Make sure the Asus as open firmware installed like DD-WRT

In that regard you have to "rely" on Open Source, there's no hw manufacturer unless you have a contract that'll provide what you're asking for. pf/opnsense will most likely be overkill and/or a waste of money, grab a MT7621 based box and you'll be fine even if you get the 300Mbit service. As long as you still can flash without too much hassle with LEDE (fork of OpenWRT) the Edgerouter X it's a very good choice that's cheap.
